Fades That Can Fly Like Lerks!

<div class="IPBDescription">well not really..but close</div>I'm very satisfied with the change of blink in 2.0, granted no one has played very long, but when I was playing I noticed almost no one used fades, but they can be a great deal more useful than they first appear. At first I was a little upset that blink moved so much slower (supposedly you're hidden while blinking but an hmger had no problem killing me) and I thought that you could only move forward. Excuse me if this is already common knowledge, but if you jump in the air while pointed upward and use blink in mid-jump you can fly into the air with the speed of a lerk. I was playing around with this on ns_bast in the refinery hive, you can zip all over the top levels, a little harder to control, but still possible, this also means you can crawl around in vents. Also, blink can be very fun when going over ramps or even just small inclinations, it will jettison you into the air and is a neat/useful entrance into what may be enemy territory. Examples are the tiny "bumps" in the floor at marine start in ns_bast and the huge ramp-like elevator near engine room. Again, if everyone already knew this, my apologies.

<u>Miscellaneous stuff I didnt feel like creating a separate thread for:</u>
o Is anyone having problems using metabolize? Whenever I play the weapon doesn't appear at all...not 'redded out' its just completely not there...no icon or anything, cant switch to it at 3 hives etc.
o All the games I've played are usually considerably longer than what you guys were aiming for...still, please don't change it, it's alot more fun to have a 1 or 2 hour game than a 10 minute one or less. Longer games feel like a campaign, if you make it like 5 minutes it starts feeling like a cheesy counterstrike round.
o This isn't something I feel is a huge balance issue, and I still don't have alot of trouble winning as alien, but fades die kinda fast to LMGs...unupgraded ones, I think they need more armor or something, it's kind of wrong to ignore fade and stick with just skulk/lerk/onos. Since acid rocket was moved back a hive they really have no option but to fight close range, and since one unupgraded marine is a serious threat these days (not to mention they travel in packs almost all the time) they really need something to keep them alive longer.

Edit: Erm...I know this sort of looks like Kharaa strategy but its more of a general tip/compliment and in light of the miscellaneous things I think it sorta belongs here.

yep, the new blink is incredibly fun to use. my favorite is leaping huge gaps with it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

My favorite would be to blink over the pit of doom in noblitzk or whatever you call it

Give a good Fade the current Blink and Claws, and you have a very powerful(but fragile) killing machine

As said in the other thread: Blink is hellafun.

And yeah Fade is way to weak if you play 1.04 style. You have to use hit and run tactics. Blink in slash 2 times blink out metabolize blink in and so on. (there is a metabolize icon. Need to reintall?)

The metab bug is to do with server software not being updated (metamod)

    Blink now = alien's 1.04 jetpack <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> It's much more difficult to use though.

its not like the 1.04 jet pack, its much less usefull, and i'm not sure you are invinisble when you use it.., ppl didn't have any problems seeing me while blinking yesterday.. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Wow, yeah, a little bit after I posted I started thinking about it and I guess fade is pretty awesome, I was just thinking about it in the 1.04 sense, which is understandable since it used to be the powerhouse of ns..now its like more of an assassin. Everyone says its pretty effective to just blink past someone...but I've found that leaping into the air and then pouncing on someone is much more fun, no marine really expects an alien dropping on top of them. Unfortunately I predict that the fade will become that odd, quirky class with a small cult following like lerk used to. But anyway yeah, most classes tend to stick to 1 or 2 power skills to plow through everything, all fade skills are made to work in tandem so setting hud_fastswitch to 1 is a good idea :p

Oh, I heard a long time ago that there was a way to change your view to third person, could someone tell me the cvar to change? I know its cheating but I'm a fan of messing around on my own on a lan game, so if it was fixed (like r_noweapmodelthing) I would appreciate it if someone would tell me.

Anyone who thinks third person is cheating probably hasn't played The Specialists. Your aim is so much worse even if you are using a melee weapon. It just isn't worth it so you can just peek around corners, I don't understand how that would give you an advantage (so you see who is coming, you will still have to fight them).

Another thing I noticed, is that Fades don't take Falling damage any more (like lerks) <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Fades are completely visible while blinking. I don't know why this was changed, as it ruins the atmosphere imo to see something moving so fast in such a silly fashion, and blink would be far more effective if you simply "appeared" in front of the marines.

That's what sensory chambers are used for.

There's no feeling like turning a corner, seeing a marine at the end of a hallway almost done building a TF, blinking behind him, and waiting for him to hear you snarl before slashing him. <!--emo&::fade::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/fade.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fade.gif'><!--endemo-->

I like fades... but I'm kinda too lazy to learn how to use it. I think blink's gonna be kidna like lerk flying -- useless until you master it. Maybe one day I'll find the time to try some tricky manuevers with blink. Until then, fades are useless for me at least.

Yes blink coupled with the higher damage of fade claw attack make for a good shock trooper. The Fade needs to pick targets selectivly, then blink in kill and blink out and heal. If used this way the Fade can be very effective at inflicting high losses on the marine team, not to mention making res off each kill.

it seems that blink moves you to fast... i always seem to end up slamming into walls and then running out of adren. but once you run out of energy you can still blink, you just move a little slower. and since you can fly with blink, the fade can basically fly better than the lerk!
  • HauntedHaunted Join Date: 2003-03-01 Member: 14178Members
Blink was just ok for me until I discovered that I can blink through vents without getting stuck.

A marine was knifing our res in pumping station, and I blinked from vent hive to pumping station and slashed him to death.

Poor guy, never knew what hit him. A skulk, or a lerk coming through a vent, plausible, but a fade!

It adds a whole new dimension to the game.

    The fade now needs a cape <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

i like the old blink better, but the new one is ok.

btw, skulks were the only ones with no fall damage. believe it or not, lerks COULD take fall damage, it just wasn't easy to replicate (fly really fast into a 45 degree obstacle that would redirect you straight down <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)

Would you prefer it move you slower so you can get shot more? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

It is silly that they can see u when u blink basicly cos it looks silly. maybe if it was like a mist flying along but too see the actualy fade is daft.

Still its nice plus there is no point in regen with fade and really there is no point in cloak for any alien as u can just fill the map with SCs
  • bobertoboberto Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6306Members
Blinking down those ramps in the new maps feels a lot like skiing.

Fade is my favorite alien. You just gotta learn to be very stealthy and not go in like you have the health of an onos. Just hit and run over and over.
  • StakhanovStakhanov Join Date: 2003-03-12 Member: 14448Members
Did you notice that carapace slows you down while blinking ? When blink jumping it feels like you were on low grav settings , flying at lerk speed.

It's just too bad that blink doesn't properly cloak you. Turrets shoot you , HMGs keep firing at you making close range blinking suicidary (while the marines shouldn't even know wether you are closing the distance to them or fleeing)

Oh , and blink-clawing isn't that hard to learn. *blink* *slash* *slash* *blink* *metabolize* is the best pattern for safe fading.

The day it came out, I built a stack of movement chambers in Viaduct Hive and you can hold the attack button down and fly around as long as you want.

you cant peek around corners in TS. in third person you can only see what you could in 1st person. a bit of well done coding. pity NS dosnt have TS's flashlight code eh?
