Client-side Performance Drop?

<div class="IPBDescription">Bad FPS in 2.0?</div> only 6hrs 3mins to go till my 2.0 d/l is done, until then ive been browising the forums (although im obviously not gonna do it for 6hrs, after 30mins of u lot ramblin on does my head in <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> )

some1 said that their FPS halved from 1.04 to 2.0.

anyone else had this problem?

ive had to do so much work to get NS 1.0x playable FPS wise (ive overclocked my voodoo2 (yes - mock me if u must), dropped down to the lowest res (thats 320x220. yes - mock me if u must), reduced gl_max_size to a crappy value (the gun symbols in top right off screen now look like they were created by an autistic 4yr old. yes - mock me if .... u get the idea

anyhows if i spend 10hrs of download to find out its unplayable i am gonna have to go medieval on everyone-with-a-post-count-over- 50 ****

-Seraph

P.S. hows the server improvemnt done? made a big difference?
P.P.S. how long does a game last now? its not been reduced to a couple of minutes, CS-wise, has it?
P.P.P.S to the people moaning about imbalance - u've been playin it for a day. give it a chance <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    My ping used to be 150 on average. Now it is 50. I like the changes a lot, whatever they are.

    I get no performance drop, myself.

    We've had reported server load drops up to 80-95% (meaning lower ping on those servers that had been CPU limited!)

    Rounds currently run very long as people are not used to the new abilities, maps, and most of all TACTICS that are needed. They're still stuck in the v1.0x rut, so Marines are able to turtle up and drag out maps for literal hours on end.
    Once we start seeing the majority of players actually adapt to the new frame of mind, rounds will shorten and grow more vicious, and the fact that the game IS balanced despite complaints (yes, even devour/redemption Onos has a counter) will become clear.

    Seriously Ive had a 38 average ping in a lot of servers where I used to get 50- 60 ping.

    In terms of my fps, it was already maxed out and it didnt decrease in anyway. 2.0 makes lag go down, general happynes for everyone from what Ive seen so far.

    I'm getting 30 pings in 1.04 100 ping servers. I like 2.0 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Too bad you can't play for now though <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    Performance, non bandwidth wise, is better for me now that I can turn welders lights off. However, flashlights and phase gates still murder my fps.

    My ping is now down to 90-140, from 150-210.

    Well, except when there are more than four turrets present. On average, it's about +30 ping for every turret after that. I'm hoping that maybe a turret area limit may be introduced - I played a game today where the com had built over 15 turrets in base, and everyone was getting 350+ ping. Apart from this though, it's a lot smoother.

    good news

    oh and nasty, gl_max_size 64 will help keep ure fps up (default is 128)

    although, ure bad FPS is a neat-o legal wall-hack. when u come close to an alien/marine base that is full 'o stuff, the drop in FPS should tel u that u r close to something.

    every cloud...

    oh and i hope the server performance will affect my 56k ping too.

    oh yea - question for those who know the HL netcode - i was talkin to some guy, sayin that i stay to 18 player servers (in times of 1.04) because havin huge servers gives me a nutty ping. but this guy said that the number of players is totally irrelevant - it does nothing to ure ping.

    surely when the server is startin to choke, then less players = less data to transfer = better pings???

    ping is better but still increases to 100+ when theres more than 25 players

    if you havnt got a good computer dont go aliens, theres so much transparancy in 2.0 now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Double-check your shortcut and see if "-32bpp" is a part of the command line. MonsE made that option available in the installer, but there's a good chance that on some systems it may be part of the problem.

    I can't promise this will help everyone (if anyone at all), but it's something to try.

    My fps was horrible in 1.0, and stayed horrible. I can't say I noticed a major performance loss. A little, maybe.

    The many transparent structures may also be a factor, transparency does terrible things to fillrate on any video card, and when on an older card that doesn't have good performance to begin with, it's really bad.

    Said this earlier, copy paste:

    I was able to play the previous version with 16x anisotrophic filtering and 6x AA and my fps was almost always 99.

    With the same settings in this new version my FPS dropped to ~30-50.

    Now, with 0x anisotrophic filtering and 0x AA NS doesn't even look good, and fps is 40-60.

    And playing is horrible because of this. What's wrong ?

    i do get a performance drop, i used to get 99 fps constant with rarely a drop, but now i get about 60-80 ish, but my ping has stayed the same i think!! not too sure cos ive been having troubles with my isp. but im deffinatly getting performance drops, its nothing major i can probs tweak it back to what it was but cannot be arsed =]

    No problem with performance here -- have installed it on three different computers, and they perform as they did before.

    Keep in mind that the default settings in the new NS are as follows:

    fps_max = 70
    fps_modem = 30

    Change these to(if your a broadband user):
    fps_max = 120
    fps_modem = 40

    Should fix most FPS issues if you have newer hardware.
  • DashelDashel Join Date: 2003-03-24 Member: 14847Members
    Performance seems the same to me. And the server side improvements do not appear as drastic as advertised.

    Marine spawns are almost all more open and more W_poly intensive. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Servers are alost all checking how many more players they can handle, some servers gone too far. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Apart from ther overall performance is better.
    Just choose a server closer to you. Sadly most are full <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    With ping 200-400 being a good comm is impossible!

    <b>gl_dither "0"</b>
    to disable dithering. dithering not really needed in 32 bit mode.
    <b>cl_cmdrate "x"</b>
    while "x" must be a divisor (full or half or one third) of your average fps.
    <b>cl_updaterate "x"</b>
    range "x" between 20 and 101. 600k cable 101 works fine. isdn 35-50. When your net_graph is bad, lower this number.
    <b>cl_dlmax "128"</b>
    Sets the maximum number of kilobytes to download from a server. 128 is fine for cable/dsl
    <b>cl_himodels "0"</b>
    enable high quality player models. Set to 1 for slightly better quality models.
    <b>gl_wateramp "0"</b>
    enables higher water detail.
    <b>gl_playermip "1"</b>
    sets player rendering quality, with 0 being slowest but highest quality and 2 neing ugly but faster.
    <b>gl_picmip "0"</b>
    overall game rendering. 0 being highest quality, 2 being lowest. 2 is only for really old cards.
    <b>gl_ztrick "1"</b>
    Z-Buffering variable, try 1 and you may notice a speed increase or it may cause what seem like random pauses. if so back to 0
    <b>gl_keeptjunctions "0"</b>
    If set to 1 it can fix visual problems between textures [e.g broken gaps] but you'll see slightly less performance, set to 0 to disable this and gain performance but a few visual cracks in textures.
    <b>gl_round_down "1"</b>
    Sets texture round down, i.e. the higher it is the more fps you get but lower quality. Up to you.
    <b>gl_cull "1"</b>
    Renders only visible stuff, 0 would take up more resources
    <b>r_dynamic "0"</b>
    enables dynamic lighting effects.
    <b>r_decals "100"</b>
    decal count.
    <b>mp_decals "100"</b>
    Lower this setting for faster dissapearance of sprays explosions etc whic saves some fps

    <b>rate "10150.04318"</b>
    This controls network packets so that your connection bandwidth does not get saturated, setting is for maximum bytes per second. Experiment to see which rate suits you, try anything up to 25000 on cable/dsl. 56k I'd say around 4000 and ISDN 5000-6000. Use net_graph to help check your connection is doing ok. Also note that servers can limit rate
    <b>ex_interp "0.1"</b>
    Interpolation, which is about the only 'dodgy' config command there is. Essentially a lower value makes where you see models more accurately, but more jerky on your screen. Now in NS this isnt a major problem because its not really beneficial, whereas cs is another story. Keep it default, its the best way, since I can see wwcl coming into NS more soon which limits it, and a lot of other commands, to default values via a server side plugin.

    <b>violence_ablood "1"
    violence_agibs "1"
    violence_hblood "1"
    violence_hgibs "1"</b>
    Enables blood and gibs, more blood and more gibs

    In the config file that comes with 2.0 there is the command: <b>fps_max "60"</b>

    This might be the problem with alot of cases of framerates dropping if your fps_max was set higher originally.
