Bandwidth Requirements For An Ns Server

<div class="IPBDescription">Incoming and Outgoing</div> Hi all,

I am currently investigating setting up a server for the newly established clan myself and some of my mates have formed. We are based in Australia, the corner of the earth in which bandwidth still costs and arm and a leg, so I have a few questions regarding bandwidth I'm hoping some current server ops can help me out with.

What are the bandwidth requirements for a server to achieve a sub-40ms ping?

As bandwidth in Australia is metered on INcoming traffic and for the most part OUTgoing traffic is unmetered, I'm curious to know what sort of bandwidth a 16 player server with say an average of 8 hours play time a day requires?

Also, what are the neccessary download / upload speeds neccessary to achieve a sub-40ms ping?

I've been told that a server like that would need between 40GB - 60GB OUTgoing traffic a month, but I have as yet not been able to get any hard and fast stats on the INcoming bandwidth.

If anyone can help me out based on their experiences running a server I would be exceedingly grateful.

Thanks in advance guys!

I'm no server runner but part of my college is networking so here goes. A 1.5+ mbps bandwidth downspeed would be more than enough, and upload greater than 256 would be playable for, 16-20 players. 512 would be able to run even more. Upload will always be very more important that download rates if your serving. After all...your SERVING. heh. I belive the average client uses between 6-10 Kbps for datagram exchange so, Being able to gaurntee that and having a good cpu will get that low ping. I sure hope this helps...Sorry in advance if it dosen't.

Yeh helps with part of my question, thanks mate <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

But I'm mainly looking to find out the MBs of bandwidth it will take up over a period of a month on both outgoing and incoming, so I can look around at appropriate traffic allocations for dedicated servers or co-location.

    Well..

18 Player server tooks something like 57.7 k/s download and upload.

32 Player server tooks 100 K/s download and upload.

If we have 32 player server which is fulled..

    2 x 100k (upload&Download)* 60 sec (= 12mb minute) * 60 minutes (=720 mb Hour)* 24 hour = day (=17.28 Gb)

Funnest thing is that 17 Gbs per day sounds really fun..

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I am thinking of hosting s server also. I have nice low ping TWC 50-56,bs down/4.5-6mbs up. Will that work for a server up to 34 people? What speeds will I need to dedicate to my home server/

@NeckSnapper, just checking that you realize this is a thread for ns, not ns2. It's also twelve years old.

Oh crap I need this for an NS2 server also I lowered my requirements to about 28 people. With 24 active players, 3 spectators, and one admin slot. Do you know the answer?
