NS supported
would you like to have NS support for steam?

personally I do, what do you guys think at this point, where many bugs have been fixed...
would you like to have it download updates automatically?

now that is open publicly, the ones that didn't try it, give it a shot and post if you would like NS in steam or not, and why.

just comment if you tried the latest Steam version.

I had downloaded Steam before.. If I was right it was a general pain-in-the-
First it autolaunched whenever I logged in, that wouldn't be so bad if the Remeber my password box actually worked.. I don't recall being able to speak to people ingame... I thought it was a totally worthless server browser.. hlla works better

I have just one question: What is the steam good for?

Well, i tried it few days ago and it was TERRIBLY slow, first i downloaded it, ok, then i started it and it began to update itself and download some things...at barely 4KB/s, took about 5 minutes...then it was doing *something* about 15 minutes, in what i had almost no net traffic, no HDD work, and my processor load was about 3%, then it finally started. After i specified path to my hl.exe i wanted to start it, it said its preparing something and it will take 30 MINUTES!!!! i said "**** off you stupid useless time wasting crap" closed the window and uninstalled it and deleted the install file.

Just few shots from my "steam encounter".

I have yet to hear anything positive about STEAM. Also, it's my observation that STEAM is mainly invented to pave the way for a Pay 2 Play system, which I am fundamentally against.

If you didn't catch it, my response to STEAM is: I really don't hope so.

ns has it own style and shouldnt change if ns DID ever go to steam i would be annoyed but would still play the game

I dunno why i wasted my time getting Steam.

Having it running in the background (not actually doing anything i told it to, at least) my pings in NS were up by about 200ms. Disabling it DID fix this. Right now, there's nothing i want to actually use it for, it opens far too many windows and it's ugly.

This app is pointless, i wouldn't even bother with it if i were you, or anyone else.

It's not useless. I think it's a great tool if done properly. And NS on Steam would be great due to the exposure. Hopefully get more ppl to play.

Has anyone tried the new Steam 2.0?

I've not an idea what you guys are talking about, I didn't bother try uypdating on the day it came out because the servers are horrendous at that time. I recently just updated my TFC/CS/HL through steam and it took less then 5 minutes for all of them at 800 kb/sec constant for all of em. I have no idea what you guys are talking about. The server browser is crazy slow though.

Yes actually, Steam is a FANTASTICAL way to dynamically keep an update in progress up to date. PTs and Vets, imagine not having to download the new version every 5 secconds and auto-updating every time you conect.

Also, the interface for the games platformed on steam have some VERY nice improvements... emphasis on the server loacting tool and menu. That, and NS on steam would boost the popularity and availability of the game.

Overall, Steam is probably Valves best idea yet and kicks the **** off of downoading mods and updates from random and sometimes unreliable places on the internet. The only problems Steam has had is the past are the bugs with the recent aditions like the friends menu, which, if they fix, could prove very usefull.

    EDIT_________________

But CS, christ, have you played the new CS? its HORRIBLE. I cant wait till i figure out how to rip absolutly all of the sounds and sprites out of it and replace them. the entire game loosk smother and pastel... it has those rediculous weapon names. the new graphics for the buy menu are horrid and gameplay looks about as realistic as Warcraft3. not to mention all objectives are obligatorily ignored and its stil a colt/AK/deagle jumping headshot deathmatch... its still just Quake4

I have never been so lazy as to prefer a piece of software to update my games for me. I have never found them to be as reliable as the tried and true method of searching the download mirrors for a good server.

You guys do realize that the version of Steam you are using now is a BETA? It will have bugs. It will be slow. That is the nature of beta software.

That said, I installed Steam when it became publicly available and I haven't had that many problems.

Steam is a great system, for both players and mod makers. It allows mods a chance to get on your hard drive and get automatic updates in a trickle (no more downloading 100+mb patches). It also leaves the door open for commercializing a mod with a flip of a switch. This is a HUGE win for mod makers. For players, you get automatic updates as well as built-in cross-game server searching, instant messaging, etc.

as long as you don't HAVE to use STEAM to play ns its ok to me.. (no pay 2 play........ )
I think tools like HLSW are much better than STEAM...
btw auto update sucks, you never know what STEAM is downloading atm.. it would just block ur bandwidth...

What is the homepage for this "Steam" you speak of so that I may learn more of it?
I know essentially what it is, just not what it does.

I've been using steam for the past few days, nothing bad I can really say about it, I tried cs it took about 10min to d/l, the HL2 movie that was released yesterday took 3 mins to download.

Everything on steam is free right now also, also steam will be hosting custom maps, so you will never have to d/l them from the server which could take forever...

2 Frogg2 - Well, actually downloading map from the game server takes less time than starting HL from Steam for me.

Hell, i still have one question (modified "what is steam good for"): Why should i use Steam when i dont like automatic updating?
  • BreakfastSausagesBreakfastSausages Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11148Members
    steam sucks hard.

as a game browser it is inferior to currently available software.
as a download/update client it is inferior to currently available software.
as a chat client it is inferior to currently available software.

Explain to me again the advantages of steam for the consumer?

It is a beta, so maybe I will give it a second chance in the future, but right now if I had a choice between steam and never playing halflife again... I would be at best-buy looking for a new addiction.

To be honest I have had absolutely no problems with Steam. Runs well and updates pretty quickly.
