Meh. Not sure how I feel about that. I can certainly understand why people wanted it to stay Noname, having only played since NS came out, but changing it back still sort of bothers me, for a couple reasons:

a. The hive is named "Noname"? What sense does that make? Noname was nothing but a nickname given to the hive that had no name, and now that that actually is its name it just seems sort of stupid.

b. The hive's real name is Mother Hive, and the name was deleted due to a last minute bug/accident/whatever. It should be fixed and that should be the end of that IMHO, but now the name's being changed back because the people who never knew the hive's real name are bothered by it? It just seems wrong somehow.

I think it was also changed due to the fact that "mother" is the name popularely used for "mother interface" another place far off on the other side of the map.

I have an idea, you can use the name "Mother" with the other two or three guys, while everyone else uses the name "Noname." That way everyone can be happy and you don't have to complain anymore. Yay. Everyone's a winner.

noname hive should stay.
Its a generally accepted name for a hive without a name.
Its cult.
Another name would only confuse comunication.

I wonder why theres nobody that calls this hive differently. There are enough other possible logical nick-names.

Sometimes we will se a confused Newbie asking "WTH, the hives name is NONAME???" and we can answere, "jeah little kid, once there was a time, were this hive had no name. Some people were really upsed about this, but not for long. Most people quickly started calling it noname and when it wasnt sieged or JP rushed it still lives on."

Maybe someday we contact some Internet-amish NSplayers, a huge comunity only playing on LAN (with 1,0) that has a completely different name for that hive. Then we start war with them and put them into reservats without names.

In England we call it Unnamed hive, perhaps this has a certain awe about it that noname doesn't?
• gooseticklergoosetickler Join Date: 2002-05-14 Member: 615Members
That hive has some personality, I hope they dont change the name. Even though the name was changed due to a bug or whatever, its fitting for that hive.

Personally, I couldn't care less, either way. It's just a name, guys. Why does it matter if you have to say "Mother" instead of "Noname"? Humans can be so obsessive over names, sometimes... bah, we call it noname because it rolls off the tongue way easier. you brits aren't very sensible. Us americans are as lazy as possible when it comes to playing games, so the name that was easier to say is the one we use. Now, as it pertains to this thread, I couldn't care less if it's called mother or unnamed, though it would prevent confusion with mother interface if it was called unnamed. I like the idea of not having any name on it still. Like Ollj said, it's cult

Wow. Of all the possible things of the world to complain about,.. you... COMPLAIN.. about the name of a hive? When there are 999999999999999999999999999999999999 other things to complain about.. you.. COMPLAIN.. about.. a HIVE NAME?

I say they should just leave that blank, and everyone calls it what ever they want!!!

or we could just call it "the hive".....

If a Hive is called Noname, why can't the Skulk be called Bob?
• DocZDocZ Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9831Members
I see two very good reasons for explicitly calling that hive "noname"

1. Everyone that has played the game has called it "noname" or a variation of it (unnamed, nameless). To call it anything else would confuse many people. To call it "mother" would confuse some even more since, as it's been said before, there's another place on the map with the word mother in it, and it's clear across it.

2. It's a cute little inside joke/secret we "old-school" NSers (assuming this game will become amazingly popular in the near-future which is quite possible) will know, and it will make good conversation to new players asking about it.

No, because that makes it difficult to find on hivesight. Also, it would mean that you wouldn't be able to see the names of teammates who are in the hive location on hivesight.

Open explorer.
Navigate to Natural-Selection directory.
Open titles.txt in notepad.
Ctrl + f and search for "SKUL".
Replace SKUL with Bob.

And about the brits calling it unnamed hive. W....T....F? noname's easier to say isn't it?

I tend to call it 'that hive....that doesnt have a name for some reason' But its usually dead before I finsih typing that...
• MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
Well, at least if it *has* a name that's something, though I'm very disappointed that Mother is out. I remember when NS first came out though, and everyone thought Nancy only had two hives - any way of avoiding that for 2.0 is good, I guess.

DOWN WITH NONAME UP WITH MOTHER

And also "noname" sounds silly. Unnamed all the way, baby.

not all brits call it "unamed"

some of us have sense (it must be the clean southern air) and call it noname
• juhojuho Join Date: 2003-02-01 Member: 12965Members
Yeah, great to see that it's now noname (I have also called it nameless and unnamed but that's a different story)

I believe that most of the NS community (including me) doesn't member that the hive was ever called mother hive. Noname, nameless on unnamed was widely adopted and used.

The other fact that there is also Mother interface in the other side of the map, I think that it's wery good that the hive is now noname and not mother hive.

Noname maybe in the sense of "nameless", that cannot be named (or something) like a cursed place or something.

I sometimes called it Mother...

as a brit, i've never called it 'unnamed hive'

clearleh it is 'noname'

In germany almost everyone is calling the hive "noname" (some few say "nameless" or "unnamed").

As Ollj said before, "Mother Hive" would cause problems with "Mother Interface".
You know, we all tend to shorten location names.. so when your Commander says "ok people, relocate to mother", because he wants to lock down Subspace and Port (see, short names are everywhere *g*) and half the team goes to the Mother Hive (wich is a really bad place to relocate imho)... you can imagine the rest.

I'm absolutely fine with "Noname" as location name.. it has become a part of the "NS vocabulary" just like "Fatty"
