1.1 Release Day...

Can the download servers handle it?
I'm sure this pertains to most if not all of you NS players out there. When 1.1 is released, I know that I will not want to spend 3635 minutes waiting in line at fileplanet to nab it. This is more of a suggestion to the devs than a gripe, so here it goes:

Is there a way you could release a "server" edition of 1.1 before you release the regular client to everyone?

Not only would this reduce the download bottleneck somewhat, but it would also give server operators some time to install and configure their servers properly so that we can all enjoy the wonders of 1.1 that much sooner. I don't know if it is even possible to release a "server only" edition of NS, but I figured I'd throw out this suggestion anyways.

That's a good idea imo, a few hours would be enough.

Yes, for the love of all NSPlayer, don't make the main download mirror a fileplanet one

Cuz we all know how *** fileplanet is.

was the ns 1.0 release completely full? no.

sure it was slower than normal but it wasn't the normal 2kb/s you get from other mods, instead it was a nice 50kb

Fileplanet is only bad if you don't pay for a personal server I download at a steady 300-400 kbps from fileplanet. Of course, I download enough crap from there to offset the cost/time of downloading it free elsewhere :-D

For you it might not have been. But all the other mirrors on Oct31st where not working for me. At least when I did goto FilePlanet, it crashed! and I jumped from a 110min+ wait to a 5 min wait.

BitTorrent is the absolute best solutions for this. It's free, and upload is well distributed so that everyone can get it quickly. Since everyone uploads at about the same speed as they download, performance doesn't degrade when more people try to get the same file.

After everything calms down, a couple basic mirrors will be able to easily handle the load.

MonsE completely owned the first ever public release of NS -- if he could handle that, which he could, then this path will not be bad at all.
  • glioglio Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4557Members
You could always use FileShack too. They have lines unless you pay, but they also have more servers, so I don't think it would be as bad as FilePlanet.

pff if it ever gets released before the NS community shrinks to 0

If I'm not mistaken, the plan is to release the NSDS patch a day before the client patch already. I would like to see it on BitTorrent as well. It's good for the server and it's good for the clients.

The win32 hlds is too similar to the win32 client so they can't release it a day early which means me dling it then uploading the changes at 16kbps to my server while I dl the client.

Too bad they can't do anything to make it different from the client. (edited server client.dll maybe?)

There is unlikly to be a server side patch first. Chances are it will come in as a complete package, around 100 MB. It is possible that they come in a form of an update, like 1.04 -> 1.1 upgrade, with the new models and sounds and the client .dll

*COUGHS* ... right also a better plan then blabbering on about something i said was already happening... is could the patchs be split into 2 ? E.g. Maps + Files? or something like that so 56k'ers dont have to spend all day downloading a file, and keep disconnecting every 2 hours (England sucks ) although i got dsl

I've actually h4xed the source code. So I'm making 1,000,000 copies, packaging them, and distributing to a store near you. The msrp is 39.99 and the first 10,000 to buy get a free gorge or skulk plush doll (with proof of purchase and 3.95 S&H, Lerk doll not yet complete, sorry)

That sounds like a really good deal. Hey wait if NS is free, then those dolls cost $$40 WTH? I think you are trying to rip us off. Besides NS is free. I don' think that we need to worry about this too much, it will be realeased in due time, and the NS team will find a way to distribute it efficiently.

    At least we hope

Considering that most here would gladly pay about $40 for a well-done Skulk, Gorge, or Lerk doll, that seems like a pretty good deal to me (much less the number that'd be likely to pay $40 to play v1.1 early). I'm just gonna have to find one of those origami model unwrappers, and use the output as a cloth pattern to make my own 'til MonsE gets on the ball with the dolls and/or action figures.
