    yea but if you try to learn it, it can royally mess with your head...windows has built in emulation to change teh keyboard layout. I tried to learn it,but kept forgetting to change the layout at work, and would type with the wrong layout. Then i started to combine the two, so i reverted back to standard qwerty althou i'd like to user dvorak as it really is faster

    My only gripe is that to many people use it and then half don't understand what they are saying. half the people reading it, not because they couldn't, but because they have never seen it or have a use for it. I know a couple guys who are big on leet speek and it just bugs me to be honest. To many use it thinking they are god. Only to whine greatly if killed and proved otherwise. Wouldn't be to bad but...I think it's worse in CS sadly.

    Of course if it was done up by a Dvorak-user, we'd have 'omned'... a lot easier to pronounce, as it at least keeps a vowel in there. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well, in Welsh or Gaelic the "w" would be pronounced as "uu" (like vacuum), so pwned would be roughly, pewned or poo-ooned or sommit'.

    Actually it was not designed to slow you down. Thats actually a myth. However the part about arms getting jammed was.

    The qwerty keyboard was designed so that letters which are commonly placed next to each other in words are on oposite ends of the keyboard. This way you alternate hands (and thus sides of the typewriter) while typing. This keeps the arms from jamming. DVORAK was designed as a more intuitive manner to type and also primarily with speed in mind now that the equipment is no longer a factor.

    Unless of course you can type faster than the electrons can go down the wire <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I use a Dvorak keyboard too, and I'm quite happy with it. It's can be slightly confusing to make the necessary mental gear-change when switching between QWERTY and Dvorak machines, especially when you start typing with words beginning with A or M (which are the only two keys in the same place), but I'd say it's worth the trouble - it really is less stressful on the hands. I couldn't say whether I was faster with Dvorak than QWERTY though, although many touch-typists claim this as a benefit.

    Other advantages are that people can't look over your shoulder and read your passwords, and it can be pretty effective at stopping people messing with your machine when you're not around.

    The disadvantage is that Dvorak typos aren't as immediately recognisable to readers as QWERTY typos, it just makes you look illiterate by changing a couple of vowels <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I once had one unfortunate soul try to leave a note for me on my machine in a text editor window - he quickly found the layout was Dvorak, didn't know how to switch it, so he just went on and typed a whole page in QWERTY through a Dvorak layout. I had to spend 10 minutes knocking up a quick decryption program when I got back to read it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I quite like Dvorak. For the record, I use a standard QWERTY keyboard; I've simply used a keyboard driver to switch it over in the software, and I touch-type. (: I'd say I'm about as fast as I used to be on QWERTY (and my QWERTY speed has dropped to about 75% of what it once was), but it really is a lot easier to type. If you ever have a month or so in which you don't NEED to type fast, try switching. Just force yourself to ALWAYS use Dvorak. You can switch the keys around if you want, or write the dvorak letters on the keycaps with a sharpie (that's what I did).

    I know where PWN came from:
    on the standard keyboard, o and p are next to each other. Someone was saying "i owned you" and accidently put a "P" cuz he can't type for crap. Then some **** saw "pwn" and he thinks "sweeeeeet" and from now on all he says is "pwn". Then a bunch of dumbasses see that, and it spreads like an STD.
