    again, I'll say it:

    <span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>id Software is not ran by monkeys. They know the product needs to make money. They will make sure enough people can run it. But don't be a spoiled brat, wanting the latest games to run on obsolete technology.</span>

    I wonder how long it would take a thousand monkeys to produce the DOOM III code on typewriters.

    Note the almost complete lack of the word 'monkey' in my post. I just have a slightly different definition of 'obsolete'.
    Also, I have a 2 Ghz machine, I will run the game (hopefully...) and map like a maniac for it (Unless Deus Ex 2s SDK happens to be better than expected, that is.). It's just that I can imagine my next LAN party:

    See, but Doom's only going to support 4-player games, so you won't need to worry about everyone else having it - you only need 3 others. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Plus, the economic benefit of targetting high-end systems is that you almost guarantee that those users will want the game, since nothing else will show off their cool systems as well. And the high-end users are the ones more likely to fork over the $50 for the game instead of pirating it.

    What's the economic point in having a million people play your game if only a thousand of them paid for it? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well, Valve seems to live off it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I agree with Nemesis. Although for a start Unreal 2 was made with better technology than UT2k3, the engine was tweaked and suddenly the game can be run on 800mhz machines. Where as Ut2k3 u need atleast a 1.0Ghz (Lucky I got the extra 200mhz). So who knows, maybe the engine for Doom3 in a few months will support processers with speeds we never imagined (whether they are higher or lower!)

    Aye, but the point I'm making is, you don't lose as much money as you might think if you cater only to wealthier customers. If the demographic is right, a game with 10,000 players can make more money than a game with 100,000 players - higher price (Half-Life sells for $30 or less, while Doom 3 will go for at least $50, most likely), and lower likelihood of piracy or resale (a good number of Half-Life players are using borrowed/stolen/generated CD keys).

    Plus, you can count on the trend of people continuing to upgrade their systems, even if it takes a while - years down the line, Doom 3 will still be selling copies because it'll still be up-to-date.

    Not that I'm in any way selling Half-Life short, because it rocks, and it's found its own excellent niche by being so mod-friendly. I'm just saying that Doom 3 has its own virtually untapped niche that it can exploit - and as someone who likes being wowed by new game technology, I'm happy they're exploting it. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    My PC sounds like it will run it fine. But, every single one of my friends doesnt have a 1.5 gighz PC. Some have a 1.2 with a radeon 8500, which is decent by todays standars, but not great. Will that be able to run it? I doubt it.
    Will they upgrade *just* to play Doom III, I doubt it even more.

    You know, everybody should just calm down and wait till something is announced about DOOM III. I mean when you think about it there is next to no info at all about it, compared to the stuff you have w/ other games. Just hope its done by Christmas.

    Unless the engine code needs to be re-worked Doom III will be out by the end of this year.

    I would imagine mapping for Doom 3 would be about 50 times harder than for Quake 3 which is about 10 times harder then mapping for Half-Life. All the detail, bump mapping the textures, more detailing. Oh yeah, don't forget: Those super high res textures and bump maps will make sure your map is pretty hefty size wise.

    You just gotta wonder when these damn graphics wars will stop so devs can get back to creating stories for their games.

    So... you WANT your games to look like crap? Wierdo.

    And DOOM III will have a great story. The guy who did 11th guest is doing DOOM III's story.

    God forbid people should pioneer new graphics technology. Why, Half-Life should have been done as a text-based adventure game. That way they could have spent more time on the story. Same with, oh, Alice, Max Payne, Resident Evil, ANY game made in the last ten years.

    Quit yer bellyaching. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I remember when I was **HAPPY** to upgrade from a 286 to a 486 just to play DOOM. and then HAPPY to upgrade from a 486 to a 586 just to play Quake. Again again HAPPY to go from a p166 to a celeron300a for Half-Life. :P

    I shall be **HAPPY** to upgrade for DOOM III again. :)

    I always assumed that Doom3 will only support 4 player multiplayer because the physics engine was so complex. If this is the case, then they could simply code in a different, more Quakey physics engine, for the multiplayer mode.

    Actually Doom I think almost everyone here is calm: No one else has used 40+ size text to scream at everyone else <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
