and why exactly would it be locked? its a pertinant question, does this name offend arabs? i have no idea, its doubtful. but i would like to know. its like when coca cola released a well known slogan but it china the slogan translated as "coca cola, the drink that revives your ancestors".

That's interesting. Come to think of it, Hebrew for... er.. the same thing is "chara" with the "ch" as gutteral. Similar sounding....

The version about "coca-cola" sounding wacky in Chinese that I heard was that it translated as "bite the wax tadpole". I wonder how many other versions there are. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

yeah i heard about the "bite the wax tadpole" thing too, maybe they ballsed it up twice in china. but its interesting to think how many products have lost popularity and sales in foriegn countrys because of a badly translated slogan or logo. millions in revenue could be at stake.

i'm sure that Arabs find it highly amusing. don't change it, it fits the game so well.

so youve got a good natured question about the origin of the word, but the title line, Kharaa Nice Name For Arabs, sounds like its a nice name FOR arabs, and youre being racist =/

thats why this thread shouldve been locked. but i guess since you didnt mean it that way its okay.

that wasnt my intention at all, i meant do they find it offensive or not its purely a rheorical question, and i am in no way racist. as a matter of fact it was an old girlfriend who told me the origin of this word (and she was egyptian)

This has been brought up before, but it's still quite humorous.

    "Kharaa happens."

I guess it's more insulting to aliens than to arabs... You should be more worried about if we called arabs Kharaa...

thats what i really meant. the NAME of the thread is gonna get it locked. and who gives a %$@! really. in russian, "kharaa" means "would a mod please lock this forum before the total flaming starts."

Do you know what 'Arab' means in Kharaa language? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

"Kharaa" sounds like "punishment" in Polish...

I think it was pretty well explained in the game story documents that Kharaa, in Mongolian, means "Watch out!" or something. So that would pretty much indicate where it came from, no matter what you think it might be from.
