Flayra Said...

<div class="IPBDescription">Stop!</div> I have noticed that whenever anyone suggests a new idea for the game, inevitably, 3 or 4 posts down is someone with a supposed quote or paraphrase from Flayra going against the idea. It gets very aggravating to read these time and time again, because they do not intelligently debate the idea at all, they just are some lame argument from authority.

They always resemble something like;
<i>"I wish a mod would delete this topic, Flayra said this will never happen. Look it up."</i>

Okay, for the record, while I have utmost respect for his game design abilities, <i><b>I don't care what Flayra's opinion is!</i></b> More correctly, I want to hear his opinion directly from him, or not at all. I am sure he is much more open-minded those who constantly quote, mis-quote, and paraphrase him.

So if you can't think of an intelligent and logical criticism for an idea that your personal bias alarm alerts you to, please don't push that post button. And stop paraphrasing Flayra!

<i>You keep using that quote. I do not think it means what you think it means. </i> - The Princess Bride, paraphrased

This problem is mainly evident in the Suggestions and Ideas forum, but it isn't an appropriate topic for there.

Aw, before it gets welded I'd actually like to respond to the original post:

You want Flayra to respond to each and every insane bit of drivel on these boards that crops itself up every five to six minutes? I was bored one day and I watched the threads move across the suggestion page like ambused flaming tumbleweeds in a hurricane. The Moderators themselves get tired of it and they themselves are often questioned of "Well you're just a mod, you don't know."

I'm sorry, but I 1.1 out before I die, If flayra feels like responding to a qusetion just once and not all six thousand times. More power to him.

    ....

    I like cheese too.

    Ha!

No, I certainly don't expect that. I think if you reread my post you will understand more clearly my point. Instead of debating an idea some people are just grabbing some random fragment of a quote that they think they remember Flayra saying at some point in the distant past, and pretending that offers them irrefutable defense that the idea they are against is a bad one.

Not to be rude but... WTH are you talking about?

No one in this thread has said anything against Flayra's design philosophy for the mod. I enjoy NS far more than any commercially released game since BroodWar. Natural Selection is one of the most interesting, fun, entertaining, and fresh things to come out in a long long time. But that has nothing to do with this topic.

How about you read beyond a sentence or two from now on before you post something completely weird and off-topic?

yutt: it's fairly safe to assume that if the words "Flayra has said" come from the mouth (fingers) of a developer, playtester, forum admin, or IRC op, you can trust the information to be accurate. Most of us have spent a lot of time with Flay, some (myself included) have even met him in person, and all have been involved with NS for a LONG time. Joe N00b, who joined 3 days ago and has 60 posts already, might not be quite so reliable, but you can count on us, at least.

ah, i read for what he has to say. and i ask you what are you talking about...basically this guy is mad about things flayra has said he would never do or add to ns. if flayra doesnt like it he shouldnt be forced into doing the needs of others. unless he changes his mind about something then it could be considered...btw it is kind of annoying some times for people to qoute flayra but there only getting sick of other people posting a million threads asking for rediculus stuff.... oh well btw my post was directed to the thread starter...sorry for not stating that

i agree that the lock ups on certain posts tend to be a little bit more harsh on these forums than other ones. The mod's threshold for the public is very low, so anything that MIGHT have been mentioned will instantly get slapped down and told "This was already said! Look it up!"

I remember particular mod locked one of my threads and proceeded to say "This has been discussed...LOCKED....Thanks for playing"

I am like....wait a second, you're <i>supposed</i> to thank me for playing this mod seeing as how I didnt pay for anything. I also agree that this paraphrasing and quoting of Flayra needs to stop.

The only people that you should really listen to are
    Flayra
    Comprox
    Coil
    Monseiur Evil
    Spyder Monkey

and i know i'm forgetting a few of you guys. These folks will be your most reliable source of information...

I think usage of the search function needs to start, morelike. If it were only used properly, with search terms that even MIGHT be applicable, we'd see far fewer locked threads.

It's not that the locking needs to stop.. it's that people need to stop posting dupe threads of ideas that have been discussed in some instances for over 20 pages of drivel that ended up degrading into 'it'd work!' 'no, it wouldn't.' 'yes, it would you n00b!' 'no it wouldn't, monkeyboy!' 'moron!' 'CS twit!' and so on.

yutt's got a point. Not about mods\playtesters\whatevers posting stuff about what Flay's said, but about everyone else posting stuff citing what they remember Flay having said as proof. I've done it a few times, I've seen it happen a few times. Yeah, it's not such a good idea because we may have got the wrong end of the skulk and it doesn't work to justify a point by saying "Flay said, and what he says goes." He might not have. Come on, that's the sort of thing that happens in a dictatorship <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Okay, I have a question. Why is it so important that no one can ever have the same conversation that someone else had before? Many people are new to the community and I don't see why they should be forced to search (yes even using 'Search') through hundreds or thousands of posts just to see if someone once mentioned something that was vaguely related.

There is more useless spam in the forum from people whining about duplicate posts than there are duplicate posts themselves. If there is no one willing to discuss the topic because it is a "duplicate" then no one will, and it will quickly sink to the bottom, no need to lock it or scream at the person that created it. If however, a lot of people want to post in it, why not let them? Isn't that the purpose of the forum?

If you have read a similar topic before... is it that hard to ignore it and move on? I would hate to see what happens in real life around some of you people if you over hear people discussing a previously dicussed topic...

"What do you think about physician assisted suicide?"
"I JUST TALKED TO JOE ABOUT THAT LAST MONTH!! DIIIIIEEEE!!!"

Oh, it's not a matter of who I know gives reliable information. I of course only believe what comes directly from the designers or playtesters (I don't even trust those dang forum mods <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->). The problem for me is that a good portion of the forum members seem to have no idea how to have an intelligent debate. They grab some extremist side, waves it around and defends it by saying "But, but...Flayra said!" It's like trying to hold a debate with 12 year olds.

<i>"Daddy said you can't talk about that! Stop it or I'll tell!"</i>

    Add...

    Fam
    Silver Fox

    to that list.

    Oh, and me. Just because.

And yutt, the reason it's like trying to hold a debate with 12 year olds, is because many of them <b>are</b> 12 year olds. Sorry to point that out.

Yes, NS still has issues, yes some people will defend one side or the other. Yes, it is <b>very</b> annoying when people will not try to see both sides of an opinion, and yes, it's very tedious to read 5 pages of knee-jerk reactions to a thread, just to get to the few that are rational. But that's what will happen with any large community. You just have to hope it will rub off in time on the others, creating a stable core with a bunch of crazies & extremeists on the edges (a bit like most countries, really.)

Peoples tolerance for repeat threads has become fairly low on here, but then again, there's only so much discussion of a game that CAN happen (especially with NS still a lot in it's formative stages, and there being not that many maps atm.) before you start to repeat. The 'Are Fades too harsh?' debate has risen, time & time again, and the general consensus is that No, they're not. Unless they're melee Fades, which devour whole teams, but the acid spammers don't understand that (see, I nearly went into it myself then! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->) But they are a bit too nasty for pubs, where people don't co-operate as much as they should, but how do you make it easier for them, whilst keeping up the power to stop the HA's in clangames?

But that doesn't stop it cropping up once a week. We just have to live with it, and keep playing. I just pray that the feedback <i>is taken on board.</i> Because I know, when I play, I try to suggest alterations that I think will still be fair & enjoyable, not just because Joe "elite" pwned me with something I didn't react to well.

    Enjoy, and hope ya stay.
