I'm amazingly impressed at the response so far.

It goes a long way towards me feeling that the work is worthwhile, if only for you guys.

Good Job on a great mod. You've got my support.

Woah. And that's in US dollars too, so $20,000 Australian. Damn, that's some strong devotion! What's Flayra do for a living anyway? He's gotta be raking in a fair amount to spend 10k on a free mod

Meanwhile, back in Australia, we see Ryo-Ohki trying to convince various banks that he is worthy of a credit card...

Can you pay with money orders?

Flayra was unemployed by choice - he worked on this mod fulltime after leaving SSS. He spent all this money out of savings, and lived very very frugally for a few years. He makes exactly whatever people donate or buy through the NS store, and that's it. The other team members have jobs for the most part, or are students. I can only imagine how much Flay has actually paid, as the NS website alone is about $1500 a year before we go over bandwidth (during every major release). Readyroom.org had similar fees (especially during playtesting where I'd max bandwidth after about a week into a month and have to start paying per GB), but I can afford them. Flayra is just a big ol' hippy that loves NS more than anyone.

If you're sending money through the postal service, you can pay in any format that a US bank will recognize and reimburse. This includes cheques, money orders, travelors checks, etc. Cash too, but that's not recommended.

/me redoubles his efforts to aquire a credit card. C'mon people, Flayra has to eat!
I didn't know it was quite like that, I assumed with Flayra's near godly efforts in NS he would be able to find a good programming/development position. But it's his choice, I'm just glad he can make ends meet and still find the time for this fantastic mod

I can understand everyone's aversion to PayPal. In the past, I have felt the same way. I am still a bit leery of PayPal, even now. However, in my research, the only user who has danger of money loss is the person receiving the money, not the person sending it. So I don't think you have any reason to worry.

Hardly. If people donated THAT kind of cash, you'd probably see a totally new NS2 with a whole new engine. But I wouldn't hold your breath that that kind of money is forthcoming.

I'd venture to say that the flow will probably hit a slump when it hits $4,000 (approx 200 donaters). But with the right advertising it could probably hit triple that before slowing to a trickle.

Just wanted to let you know that our donation system has been formally announced and launched. It's called the Constellation. Of course, anyone that has already donated $20 or more is part of this.

Please don't feel like you have to donate to be a part of the community. NS will always be free, and we always want you to play, no matter what. Donation is totally optional so I don't want any guilt.

Hey flayra, does this icon replace existing admin authicon on my own server come 1.1, or will I have both beside my name??
• OneNeutrinoOneNeutrino Join Date: 2002-11-23 Member: 9690Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
yeah i would like to know tooo if the server ops icon will be replaced.
btw flayra, nice idea u might want to include maybe 3 levels of donation "constalation" icons, for how much somebody donated maybe like: Level3 icon 20-25$ Level2 25-40$ Level1 40$+
Also you really should give some special rights for at least the Level 1 donators.
For everybody out there sceptical, you must realize how much it costs for haveing a site and forum up like this, paying for the space and the bandwith. And the people programming can't really job and read all the forums and drive NS on... and think about all those other features, and maybe...maybe one day flayra might make for NSII a own engine!!!

also i might suggest that donators might beable to donate for specifc features like NS Radio, the Site&Forum, bread and clothes for the programmers .....

also i have a question, do we have to donate b4 1.1? or could we also do that later?
• Grimm_SpectorGrimm_Spector Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3309Members, Constellation
If you read the Constellation program information, it specifies, no special rights will be given as of yet, there may be some in the future...

Sounds great, I'll donate myself.
Just a bit curious, about the implementation. I don't know much about game development or networking myself, though.
There seems to be alot of people that are interested in donating... that would be alot of names, would they be constantly updated in a central server, every time someone joined, would it be like a big sorted list or something stored client or server side?

If you donate, you help the Natural Selection Community, the icon is just a bonus.
It is to make people more obivious of others who actively help the community.

Like if i hear people bitching around during a game "I want this ..... ", "They should make this cool feature...." etc. and i press tab and see no icon then "STUFU!!!"

Wrong.

The blue TSA logo is the Dev one, the yellow skulk is the playtester icon and the green one is the admin one as you say.

However, the yellowy-green marine indicates an NS guide, not a PT. Although some PTs are also NS guides.
