Tactical Scenario: Caged Sewer Vestibule Sublevel

Die and learn
I was playing a game today as alien where we started at Ventilation. We tried to take Generator but the marines dug in first so we took Sewer. The marines went there next and basically a huge battle escalated in the Sewer Vestibule Sublevel. As you know, the Sewer Vestibule Sublevel is split in half by a small L-shaped tunnel. The marines had an outpost on the far side and we had skulks camping the near side.

It was a stalemate because the marines mowed down any alien stepping out onto their side and the skulks ate any marines that rushed their side. What eventually happened is that we got our hive up. But then this is where the marines strategy outmatched ours because of a series of stupid mistakes.

Alien mistake #1: Half the skulk team abandoned the near side of Sewer Vestibule Sublevel to wait out the last couple of resource points to go fade.

The marines NOTICED that the skulk force had diminished and rushed the near side with their entire team. This would not have been a problem but then the aliens made another mistake.

Alien mistake #2: We had a gorge in the Sewer Vestibule Sublevel. The second hive was up. If this gorge had simply webbed the L-shaped tunnel, the remaining skulks would have made mincemeat of those marines.

But the gorge didn't think about that option and instead made two OCs which were cut down quickly by superior fire power. The marines breached our defense on the near side and got a TF up. Now they had to secure the near side while the TF upgraded so the aliens still had time and in fact we ate the TF! For a few moments we had re-secured the near side of the Sewer Vestibule Sublevel.

But the gorge made the same mistake of not taking the opportunity to web the area to give our fades and skulks a chance. And by this time the marines had hmgs, and jps, and even one or two ha. Web would have changed everything but instead what happened was a successful assault by the marines. We ate their marine start base but they relocated to sewer and proceeded to corner us into Ventilation where they eventually destroyed us.

It's tricky sometimes knowing what your role is in the fight with all these weird alien weapons. When faced with a dire situation one should think of all the weapons they have at hand and choose the best one. In hindsight, I think the obvious solution for us was Web.

Thats how you tell the diffrence between a good gorge and a bad gorge, a bad gorge will ONLY build, a good gorge will secure res, hives, and use all skills givin to him, especially web and heal spray, even a few spits if theres a scrap going on.

gorges pwn at webbing marines and heal spraying them to death - works every time.

I only use spit for opening doors and breaking welds.

i always webb up hive entrances before i proceed to build defenses behind the webbs. if i have the res drop a couple of OC's to scare off the noobs then proceed to build a few DC's out of firing line to heal the OCs.

and i love it when a marine rushes me as gorge, he usually gets healsprayd then leaves the server after shouting a few obsecities at me first of course .

ive been experimenting as battle gorge with forward building. as long as a/there are fade/lurks/skulks with me then usually i web up the corridor room entrance, i will build down 1 wall slightly back from our attackin positon. start with dcs. drop a dc then get on healing duty as long as the fade is on max Health i will build the dc as soon as i see him taking hits im on healing duty again.

i then stack DCs on top of DCs unitl i have about 5 drop an OC at the front of the Dcs then another OC ontop just slightly back. usueally end up with something like this

    --OC-DC-DC-DC-DC
    OC-DC-DC-DC-DC-DC

if theres enough head room for the chambers ill try add a third row on top.

the sewer tunnel is quite hard to build in as the marines usually have a real good firing position off the bridge in sewer vestibule. but its possible it can be worth it coming around the back and coming into sewer vestibule from the marine side and building there also so that at least u can try get some chambers on the same lvl as them. webb from this position is really useful also.

Ouchies. Been in that scenario before, that exact same one. Those marines do hold that upper level leading to Sewer nicely, the punks. And yeah, webs in thos tight tunnel spots would have been great, bummer he didnt spin a few out. Did anyone on your team mention that to him?

Yeah half the team was screaming at the gorge. But I think the gorge felt that it shouldn't get too close to the battle, which is right in some situations but not necessarily in this one. Like I said, it can be tricky sometimes.

yeah, i think the saying is "hindsight is 20/20"

people always analyze what went wrong, what the enemy did, and how to beat it after a game.

many of these people do not realize that doing this during the game is what helps you to win. Even if it involves stepping away for the battle for a minute, if you can figure your opponent's strategy out, and how to defeat it, the battle will sway greatly in your favor... provided you can relay this plan to your teammates.

I thought I was the only one to have to remind the gorges they have webs.

Web is my favourite weapon to use, and my least favourite to run in to
