My ISP in australia provides 6 servers and a couple more for a clan ladder.

We have a nice little ns community going.

So yeh i always get onto servers and its always the same couple of hundred people. So its always fun.

NS needs more servers, ya.

Once the CPU usage issues are reduced a good amount we may find hosting companies offering NS server, they are a few right now but the prices are not too good and/or it can get pretty laggy.

*Prays to Flayra: Please figure a leet way to lower CPU usage*

We understand that people can spend ten minutes trying to connect to our server, which is a major reason why we don't use the kick reserve method. If someone does all that work to connect, I don't want to kick him/her. It's wrong.

Heh, you were on my server and got kicked. Well, from an admin standpoint.... we pay for the servers, we put forth the time to keep them updated and to keep the players (generally) happy. Of course I'm going to ALWAYS want in my own server and since it is a clan server my clannies get in as well. Sorry it was full, it is a lot of the time but if you play early in the morning or late late nights the server is usually only carrying half the capacity.

Fear not for as soon as the CPU problem is fixed I will provide the greatest server ever concieved mawhaha. The problem is that with the CPU usage server hosting companies (recongamer etc) won't allow clients to use that mod, however I will be switching over my expensive 20 person CS server as soon as they allow us. When that happens you will see a lot of 146... servers starting, and they should all provide pings below 60. I know mine will or I will take my 80 bucks a month and use it to SMITE THEM.

I have no problem with reserves. If server admins want to set aside slots for themselves and clanmembers, thats their choice.

Some serverop please tell me, how much do you pay monthly to have a server running?
• CrazedMonkOnaMissionCrazedMonkOnaMission Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7429Members
one problem is servers that are already empty tend to be hard to fill because you can't do anything in an empty server. This makes it appear that NS has a lot less servers. Is it possible to make it so you can still build when playing by yourself and just reset it when someone else joins?

I got my own box, and hosting costs me $50/mo... unlimited 100Mbit line(so cheap because my other admin works for that ISP)

Wheres the lack of servers?

I find Australia has enough for the amount of players. Is a good little community like Space Monkey Mentioned.

if you are having problems finding servers use:
ASE

the filters work very well and it is generaly not that hard to find a server

Ok it was a temporal problem some weeks after the official 1.4 release.

I am assuming the guys talking about the Aussies servers are talking about the GameArena servers. Don't you guys get annoyed by the fact they crash so often? Some maps in the cycle never get played. I have noticed also the the GameArena servers dont show up in ASE. I go play occasionally at my brothers place and use the COGS browser to join them.

It actually took me 15 minutes last night of switching from one server to the next to find a server which actually had decent players on it. The first server I joined, the marines had two hives, but it was all lost because the marines went on strike if you didnt drop big guns and toys for them to play with. I jumped in the comm chair to try and bring some organisation to the game (the first comm quit for the previously mentioned reasons), and they threatened to eject me if I didnt drop the guns they wanted...hehehehe...needless to say, I didnt stay on that server one second longer.

Honestly, though, I rarely play on Australian servers anymore, as the quality of players is shocking. I know you T_RAT, and you too Space Monkey, Blazing Rage is another, your exceptions along with others, but in general the Aussie players/teamwork really suck bad (apart from organised clan matches). I'd highly recommend you guys try some good U.S. servers as the gameplay can be quantum leaps ahead of what we have in Australia. I'd invite you to the CoFR FR31 server which I admin in the U.S., but your both such potty mouths, I'd have to ban you..hehehe..we have strict rules on profanity(please take that as a friendly jest). Australian servers on the otherhand, you cant get two lines of chat without someone dropping the F bomb.

P.S. And Ollj, sorry about the reserve slots on FR31 mate. I know you hate them, but the server is there for CoFR to play on. Quite a number of non CoFR have got reserve slots now, as they have stuck out the hardship of being kicked and we got to know them better and now they are part of the crew. Yes, they can cause problems, ie..commander gets kicked, gorge gets kicked just as they are about to build a hive etc...but thats life. The only other way to deal with it is for us to kick ppl manually when we want a game, and thats just going to bring up issues of favouritism or vindictiveness. Its better that its an automatic system that shows no bias.

I face the same problem in Australia on the Internode server. It generally has good players, but being a dial up player, I am usually first to go.

I believe the NS server I'm playing on is actually run by a game server hosting service. Based in the SF bay area, they have good uptimes and I get 30 pings (course I'm like just across the Bay). I liked their server so much I started playing there pretty much 100% now.

If you're tired of not having servers to play on or are a server-less clan, maybe you should consider this option. You just pay money and they maintain like everything.

More good servers would indeed be welcome, however there are some semi-private servers that can be quite nice. See the link in my sig.

It's just you. ASE reports that at peak hours, NS is using about 2,200 server slots out of 8,000 or so avliable. It's simply that you are trying to get on all the popular servers.

there are lod of severs that have public passwords, means that there is less people able to get in and a good community as well.

gamespy only reveals around 250 or so servers each time hehe. But, they;re enuf.

When the server cpu usage issues are resolved or at least lessened, then perhaps we will see more public and private servers being ran. I'm an admin for a GISP and am particulary interested in seeing NS being played on our servers, but at the moment its not feasible.

wow, i only see like 476 servers on ASE....am i doing something wrong?....
• GuspazGuspaz Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2862Members, Constellation
My favourite server, www.x-crew.net, is empty 80% of the time. Until I have trouble joining, there are plenty of servers.

How can there not be enough servers when so many are empty? Think first.

There needs to be something in the game design that get's people to join an empty server. Because everyone is using ASE now and just filters out the empty servers. So empty servers stay empty. I like the idea of allowing a lone player to build stuff and then resetting it once someone else joins. Then people can get practice in as commander.
