from hera map file
can somebody give me confirmation on what entities were stripped from the hera map file to reduce the lag because from what i understand those entities should not be the ones causing the lag because they are not server run entities.

I don't know, but they did fix my smiles .

I heard that some unneeded entities were stripped, they were just addons, like trigger_hurt, elaborate lighting, but I'm not sure. Not een sure that they did strip any.

    What i remember:

The 'dust cloud' in the hall below the spawn has been removed.

The holo in the "holoroom" was removed.

    I can't recall anything else.

nothing has been removed officialy, that just servers removing "extra" stuff to try and get better performace. For one, I think it sucks

If they modify their maps like that, it would be nice if they said so in the server title or MOTD. Personally, I would like it if any server running any kind of modification would say so in the message title, or if plain vanilla servers would note that they are using only the 1.04 server from natural-selection.org and nothing else, no mods, no hacks.

I hate playing on everything but plain old regular un-modified servers. Admin mod, map entity hacks, Voogru style balance changing, I can do without all of it.

where i play gets 200 ping on standard map then after entity stripping it pings about 70 to everyone, not just me, but 95% of the players.

i never even notice what was removed so it must have been small things, yeah i think the smoke from that maintenance tunnel is gone, but it didnt really hinder or help sight at all... jsut a buncha sprites that neednt be sent across the lines.

Personally, i think lag kills atmosphere more than missing a few cosmetic entities

Seriously... if you don't like it, don't play on the server. That's your ultimate statement as a gamer, and applies exactly the same way not buying a product you don't like applies. If you don't mind or don't even notice it (which seems to be true for a lot of people), then you can appreciate what you gain from it on lower-end servers (namely, the significant drop in ping).

There's more than one server out there, people... pick the ones you like, and don't complain about the rest.

why wouldnt those entities be processed entirely client side anyways? there's no reason for everybody's view of the entity to appear exactly the same since they dont quantitatively effect gameplay, and thus no reason to do any of it on the server. If they really are changing pings then there ought to be a better way to code them.

Isnt it possible to make all the unimportant entitys client side? (like the holo in holoroom)

cant change the engine, if thats the way halflife does it a mapper cant avoid it. (i dont knwo that that is teh way halflife does it, but i assume so)

yah i don't like this being done to maps either but right now i'm trying to find out what entities are being stripped coz i want to find out whether the mod is bugged, or half-life is bugged, or the mappers used some wrong setting, coz i think something is seriously wrong if such entities are causing lag.

if an entity doesn't animate or change state then it is supposed to be client side. if it is animated or changes state in a seemingly rapid random way then it could be clientside since players will hardly be able to tell if it doesn't look exactly the same on everyone's computers at the same time.
