Zombie Stalkers?

My friend has an issue with 'zombie stalkers' directly outside his base. They came out of the kelp forest and are surrounding his base, and every time he kills one it comes back to life after a few minutes. It has turned into an all-out war between zombie stalkers and gasopods.
Any idea what's causing this?
