Why does the selection tool have a maximum range?

So, why? Are there any practical reasons? Or technical ones? Does this have advantages that are beyond my understanding? Is it possible to remove this in case there are no good reasons?

What do you mean maximum range? I've never run into this before.

    1) Zoom away from your map
    2) Draw a selection
    3) Either
    a) you have a selection. Go back to 1)
    b) you have no selection. QED

This is happening to me all the time when I try to select large rooms as a whole.
