How much rock could a rock puncher punch if a rock puncher could punch rock?

It does actually have a reason for punching rock, beyond just for kicks, which is that it is eats those glowing greenish rock larva things. Usually there's a big fat juicy queen buried deeper in the rock, which makes for a delicious snack.

You guys should perhaps on a technical level consider some distance based tesselation / displacement maps for your ccreatures. They seem to be really "organic" /rounded / detailed. They beg to have great detail at close distance!

This is usual. You can "bake" the normals after. It's always better to have a high res stuff to work on.

In a development environment you have the "high res" models and the "builder/exporter" that will do the job for you (simplifying things) . If not possible it's just one mesh for the show and one for the game.
