Get a wallhack and go full bright, or play with the gamma in your NS folder <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    I do the following:

    gl_overbright 1
    brightness 10
    gamma 10

As soon as you connect to a server, gamma/brightness get reset to maximum allowable values so its not actually 10/10.

If that fails, look at your Display Device settings and see if you can increase game brightness/gamma in there.

Am I the only one that likes the game dark? My roommates and friends that come over hate watching me play because they say they can't see anything.

I think it's much more fun when skulks can jump out from the shadows. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm with you there - if it's not dark, it's not fun.

Yep. A fulldark map would be cool to see.

    .
That you cant do with the current maps, not anywhere. :/
*note to self: bug mappers to make a solid darkness map in which marines will have to use their flashlights/phases to see, and aliens would suddenly go for adv. hivesight more than anything else.*

Really depends on your graphics card and even more on monitor.
On mine (Matrox G400 on Viewsonic PF790), with brightness of monitor maxed out i can't see anything to be usefull to the team.

The solution - use gamma adjuster. It comes standard with Matrox drivers (in advanced settings of card), and many other cards too (same, in advanced display settings).
Keep in mind that some drivers (detonators prior to 40 i believe and older matrox drivers) don't work too well with overbrightening that NS uses... for solutions, head for technical support forums <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

My display is pretty bright, but I try to match that Gamma tool that came with NS.

Yeah - NS was what finally prompted me to change to a new videocard (from a knackered old voodoo3 to a Geforce), and the default settings for it are much darker than what I was used to. I prefer it that way, all dark and spooky.

hehe I'm not sure if very many people even know about the gamma tool in teh NS folder. I used to run NS bright but after I adjusted it all out with that tool I find the game MUCH more fun!

    The dev's were smarter than the average bear for puting that in <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

well, one thing is spooky, another is that you can't see a skulk hiding in the corner... and he does see you.
that's why i said "usefull for the team".
I mean yeah, i loved it when i had to turn off all the lights and sit for 10 minutes getting used to the darkness.
But it was still not working for real game.

For NVIDIA cards, I find that the valuess of gamma 4 and brightness 2 are a good balance between being able to see a decently lit room and the darker shadows still being dark enough to hide in. However NVIDIA is a little darker in gamma so a slightly higher brightness setting might be needed depending on the monitor.

For ATI radeons, the 4/2 setting works perfectly. With both settings aliens cans till hide from me in the dark, but I can still see them running at me along a decently lit hallway. I don't like making things too bright as it defeats the purpose of the game. I like to think when I play games, so having hiding spots are a great way to keep me on my toes and checking around with my flashlight.

This is a severe problem with PC games where darkness is a balance factor. Video cards, user settings, and whatnot change each player's visual information

There is also a software tool you can use called PowerStrip. It recognizes practically any gfx card and gives you access to overclock your card (if you know what you are doing) and gamma hot keys you can use while in-game to increase/decrease settings with practicaly no limit.

On topic: monitor maybe the problem.
off topic: I would like to see a few dark room here and there but not a whole map.
Theres a cs map in the dark and first 1 to use there flashlight usually dies, hehe.
That would be sweet in NS but would be dis advantage for marines u would think. But as a marine i would care as the buzz u would get seing a skulk jump from the shadows.

This is odd , the game has never ever been dark for me, and i dont have any modeified gamma settings.

My Geforce 4 doesn't like changing gamma/brightness in-game. I have to shine my flashlight on walls for them to change to brighter shades.
