imageBeta Build 249 Released on Steam! - Natural Selection 2

Yesterday, we released a beta build of Natural Selection 2 onto Steam. It is a test version of build 249, and it is being released in beta form first because it is a little bit special. Build 249 includes a new ‘Lua binding layer’ – This is the layer of code that allows the Spark Engine (written in C++) to talk to Natural Selection 2 (Lua).

My hard drive is making a very weird sound during precaching. Precaching is also taking around 5-10 minutes to complete. Is this normal?

Most testers are consistently getting at least +20 fps. Those with good cards are reporting never dropping below 80 fps. There are still only a few beta 249 players online...so have yet to see how these improvements affect large games (16+ players).

No more praying to the Lua Gods to not f**k up my aim with random fps drops.

Seems good to go though judging by the few small games I have been in. Hope it comes in official patch form soon.

fps is much smoother now, doesnt dip too much in big fights. spinning fast also has no drop in fps (used to). fades blinking looks very accurate and precise, i can spin and hit them with a shotgun easier. also, arced a hive that had about 15 crags with about 10 arcs, fps dropped about 10 to 15 fps, nothing like it used to. this update makes it feel like i have a new rig :-D

Largest benefits will be seen from CPU /entity intensive moments like lategame - arguably this was the weakest point for NS2's performance previously.
It also comes with a slight overall improvement too (10-15% for me) when not in said intensive scenarios.
But best of all the variance in FPS has been lessened considerably, so things feels much smoother in general.

Feels like a winner! No crashes, quick to load, and I had 60-80 fps throughout the game, even in entity-heavy lategame. I'm running an i3 with a GTX-550i and 8GB of RAM, so no speed demon, but definitely smoother now!

Give fsfod the highest squad 5 badge
Is there even one that goes high enough? I think its time to invent a new tier just for this!

Nice performance! Definitely an improvement! My GPU seems the bottleneck now instead of my CPU :)

Looking at r_stats, it looks like I gained about 10-45 FPS.

And I get constant waiting 0 ms for GPU, rather than the non-constant one from before.

    GTX 560 Ti; 1090T 3.2 GHz

    Lowest graphics; 1366x768

I did see exos, and creep; but never 5 exos with 4 gorge bombing with fades everywhere yet. I consider I've seen an average non-late game.

UWE can now relaunch their game (lululul)

    249 beta impressions:
Whatever server that runs a mod I get a files missing error.
    Shouldn't this be automatic?
Even when I get Sewlek's balance test in workshop, and enable it ingame, same thing.
Could only join one unmodded server.

The browser shows all the 248 and 249 servers for me still.
  • ezekelezekel Join Date: 2012-11-29 Member: 173589Members, NS2 Map Tester
Ok so we had four or five full games on 249

    Here are the results

Highest fps: 200 (nothing special though, that's at random)

    Average fps: 110-150 (oh baby)

Lowest fps, which was during a massive battle in elevator transfer with almost every person: I believe 75 to 80 fps, not scientific stuff but what i noticed when i glanced over!

So at most points I'm not going below 120 fps! playing in 1080p resol0tion!1!

Excited for this and future stuff! (did crash twice though, luckily not during the matches!) but I crash in 248 too! funny thing is I actually had to adjust my aim to how much more frames I had, feels good!

    To the future :bz

Yeah; server browser should have an information being the build of the server itself; so the server owner doesn't have to add it manually and update it every patch...

And so the players doesn't have to try servers 1 by 1 until they find a certain build.

the luajit servers say "luajit" in them! There's a few setup by 156 which I believe is Ironhorses stuff!

Just played some b249 games on a full server for the first time. I can't express how much of a difference this luajit thingy makes. It doesn't just boost average fps, everything feels so much more responsive in general.

Early game I used to struggle to hold 75fps, and would drop to 30-35 fps in the late game, with massive stutters. Now I'm rocking over 100 fps early game, and holding on to about 50 fps late game. And a much "smoother" kind of 50fps than before. That'll be the more consistent frame times I guess.

Phenom II 955@3.4GHz, 560Ti at 1920×1080 with everything on low except for textures and AF.

If you enter 249 in the server name filter you will see the 249 servers (at least those that included it in their name).

    i7 3770k, GTX 680

Empty server: No significant FPS gains at the resolution/graphics settings I play at (usually 0-3 ms waiting for GPU). Still typically 60+ fps however.

However in a few rounds of play with 12-24 people I never saw the dips to 30-40fps that I would sometimes see near the end of a game in the past. A definite improvement if this trend continues.

    Good work!

TO get this kind of FPS boost, I was going to have to upgrade my old i7 920 @ 3.Ghz system to a new Ivy or Haswell and graphics card. Now I don't have to, and if anything just a new GFX card will help even more.

FPS for me has jumped about 30 - 40 (6990Ms in crossfire).

Server CPU usage has dropped about 5-8% (3930K @ 4.6GHz)

So far so good, means I might actually come back and play

20 bucks says UWE are throwing a party tonight. The planets have finally aligned and a thread on the forum exists with only positive comments.

    Good patch.
