NS1 Veteran

Hey there,

i just bought this game, to be honest, just because it was on steamsale - didn't have much hope in it to buy it earlier.

I was actually playing NS1 in competetive, some people may know the Clan "BTE - Born To Eat" or "flummis".
I was playing NS1 from the earliest steps to the CO_ maps, which actually ######ed up the whole scene and afaik there are no CO_ maps in NS2 - thanks for that, btw.

My first impressions of NS2 are... gently spoken.. horrible.
The minimap is just horrible, you can barely see anything there - as in where the hell are resnodes?
sidenote: renaming this to "extractor" was a stupid idea.. it were damn RT's - no noone knows what the hell i am talking about.
Being a COM is horrible aswell. easiest things i got used to in NS1 are not working anymore.
you don't have to research PG's. stuff like this is just annoying and somehow dissappoints me.
another bull###### thing is, that marines can go to the armory and just purchase weapons themself.. i mean.. dafuq.. i am the COM and i decide when i want someone to have a weapon.. maybe i need the RES to build something else somewhere.
same with turretfactories.. dafuq did you do with this?
where are the damn HMG's?
what is this flying repair robot bull######?
and more important: WHY THE HELL DO I NEED A SECOND COMMAND CONSOLE?

like i said... i loved NS1.. it was perfect. and now you pretty much ######ed up everything i loved.
your new ideas about making the game better just ######ed it up - at least for me.

i admit, that i might take some tme to get used to it.. but why the hell would you change a running system?
other than that it was better when an ONOS costs 100 res and not damn 75.
the whole game is imbalanced.. same with this powernodes now.

i am highly dissappointed.

and i'd like to hear your opinion on this.
sorry if i sound too harsh or something... but i played NS at least 4yrs of my life.

Thanks for your opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

At least you can still play NS1 if you don't like NS2.

Yes. Thats your mistake comparing Ns1 to Ns2, i think both are great games. Ns2 just brings a fresh aproach to it.

NS1 was't perfect it was a fine game but not perfect. NS2 is also not perfect, but apart from performance issues still a fine game. You might feel more at home in the lands of <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=100103964" target="_blank">NS2c</a>

    thanks for your responses.

yours was pretty helpful and i am looking forward to this here.

at least i enjoyed hearing the old "need order" commands and the new-old maps.
i'll check out ns2:c and hope it's good - if not, goodbye NS2.

Actually I should note for you that weapons purchases by marines don't use your team res as each player now has their own personal resources.
I'm not an NS1 player but I have heard people use the term RTs.

Also initially from what I've heard the second command chair was also going to allow Marines to have two commanders so to help do things like double group pushes etc, now its merely to allow the prototype lab to work

The core gameplay you loved about NS1 is still existent in NS2. Skulk vs Marine early stages, the fade's movement is significantly improved, jetpacks are very similar and still awesome.

Some of the things you mentioned as critiques come off as someone who hasn't thought out the process or is just nit picking off their first few games. For example, The Comm dropping weapons was flat out not fun for most marine players. If I wanted a shotgun, I would have to ask (usually beg) until I got one. For me, that's not fun. Renaming "RT's" to "extractors" is really irrelevant. Also, marines buying weapons does not subtract from your resource pool. It sounds like you think it does.

One thing I agree with you on -- the default map is not so good. I recommend you go to the Workshop in Steam. You can find mods (NS2 easily supports mods) for the minimap.

I run NS2 with 2 mods. One to change my crosshairs, the other changes my minimap.

i guess you are right.. did not notice this. then it is kind of okay.. even if i liked the commander, being a COM.
but ofc i am open to new things in NS2.. so it's just a thing to get used to.

still.. even if you might be righ with the "not so much fun"-part.. the com, is and should be the com. and dropping weapons was never a problem for me. if everyone has it's own res now, it is kind of okey, even if the commander is just there to build a few buildings and set waypoints /sarasm

ofc it is not relevant, but for me it is disturbing, because it was a good working name. calling it "rt" was just short and perfectly fitting.
how do i shorten extractors? exts?

would be great if you could link me the mods you are using.

and even if i said it already: i know that my first post was in a very bad mood and i sound a bit harsh and i am kind of sorry for this.
but i was and still am highly dissappointed in the whole "new" mechanics which make the game worse.. at least on first sight
(just like this turret factory thing, pg's which doesn't need to be researched etc.)

and one thing i think i won't evern be cool with is the 2nd (or even 3rd) comchair. because this is... it just is...... ..

Whoops, I actually use 3 mods.

These two both improve the minimap a lot:

    <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=108936055" target="_blank">http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/file...s/?id=108936055</a>
    <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=108732851" target="_blank">http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/file...s/?id=108732851</a>

Then for my crosshairs I use:

    <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=108346828" target="_blank">http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/file...s/?id=108346828</a>

Using mods in NS2 is really easy. Just subscribe to the mod through Steam Workshop, load NS2, click Mods (from the main menu) and activate them. You may need to restart NS2, but then you're good to go.

I agree that a lot of things were done better in ns1, (ive clocked up 500 hours of ns2 since beta)

But no need to go overboard, for example, phase tech still must be upgraded at the obs a'la ns1. And all that 2nd CC really does is prevent marines from hardcore turtling with exos.

Hahah i cant believe it!!! I was thinking of the good old ns1 times on flummis server and i can remember some names (organmueller and spoony or spoon :))

dont give it up man! ns2 is new with some changes to weapons, abilities and upgrades but the unique gameplay still exists.
i cant tell you from a competivie side of play - as ive never played it (not ns2 nor ns1) - but public kicks ass if those 1h rounds occure.

would be great if your team shows up ;) or even flummi server again
hamster, jacket, and muetz would be on it in like no time

The OP obviously didnt play, you still have to research phasegate
Commander and individual players have separate res pools, if a player buys a shotgun, the team res isnt affected.

go play the game and then get some real issues to complain about, but please, dont post if you didnt play, or didnt pay attention

So you don't like ns2 because it isn't ns1 and you don't want to learn something new?
    Got ya.

i might ask you to look up and hurpdurp a bit aswell.

maybe you go back to school and read my posts again, because i said, that there are many things i might get used to and are better in the end.
i was just criticism to some things i don't understand why they would be changed in the first place.

    but 2/10
    made me reply.

    and i am 13, not 12.

I started playing NS1 in 2002/2003, I too quit when the combat mode came out.

Every server was combat, and all people wanted to play was combat.
My main beef with NS1 still exists in NS2.

    No friendly fire.

so i guess i am not 13, when i started playing NS end of 2002. but i can't take this smartasses serious here.. some good advices are here (aka. NS:C) but this wannabe flamemode is just ... boring.

    and afaik there was FF.

after playing a bit longer and talking to old clanmates who play NS2 i figured a few things out.
and i must say, that i completely dislike the new metagame.

NS1 was a lot faster. sure, the 2nd CC is to prevent turtling but the whole meta sucks.
games take forever, because you are busy doing useless and unnecessary poop.

There was FF in tournament mode, but not as a toggle for regular mode.
I asked Charlie(Flayra) in IRC about it, he said the reason was because he didn't want some new guy getting team killed for not following orders/being generally bad.
