I have a Cisco EPC3825 EuroDocsis 3.0 Gateway router, which is used in a cable tv internet, at least with DNA / Welho in Helsinki, Finland.

Turning the "IP Flood Detection" option under Security made nearly impossible to connect to any servers or even getting a server list. When trying to connect, the client would just say "couldn't establish a connection with the server"

Disabling the IP Flood Detection fixed the problem.

Apply my fix. The UPnP does nothing for or against NS2. It's purely the UDP flood protection that is the problem. If you apply either my fix or if you have access to telnet apply the other fix.

Unfortunately I tried your first fix but my router only allows the configuration reset, I can't save it, therefore can't change it.

Could you explain the telnet fix or link me to where it's posted. Thanks in advance!

Still need your router type and whether you're using wireless as neither of those are covered in the net_log or dxdiag.
Have you already tried all of the fixes in the OP?

I've been experiencing the 999 ping problem and the red plug on occasion when I play. I can connect to servers without any issue, but when playing I'll get bouts of horrendous lag where nothing update for several seconds. I noticed when the network stats were shown on NS2, that the choke % would rise to 100% a second or two after I started lagging out.

I'm on a wireless connection to a Virgin Media Superhub. My housemate however has absolutely no issues whatsoever with NS2, which suggests it isn't a problem with our internet or the router. The only difference that comes to mind is that I'm using a usb wireless dongle on my pc and he's using a wireless pci adapater. Could it simply be I need a better wireless connector?

The only other online games I've played recently have been CS:GO and ArmA2 (DayZ), I've experienced a similar type of lag on CS:GO sometimes (the choke also rising, to 50-60%, during the lag), but my time with DayZ was completely lag-free.

Here are my dxdiag and my network log:

    <a href="http://pastebin.com/2tTK3meD" target="_blank">dxdiag</a>
    <a href="https://rapidshare.com/#!download|378p8|1482953672|ns2lag_log.rar" target="_blank">network log</a>

In this session of NS2 the lag was only consistent for the first few minutes of play and it was almost constant during the final few minutes (hence why I stopped playing). In between the start and end of the session the problem did not occur too much.

My ping has been spiking for no reason. I joined a west coast server and I live in California. I averaged about a 30-35 ping. I noticed my ping spiking up to 100 at random. I immediately checked my connection, ran a speed test, tried running another game to see if the problem persisted. But I came to find out my internet is perfectly fine.

Just an update on my suggestion regarding increasing NAT/Firewall sessions per host ..

This is fine and will give you more usablity.. but you will still reach this threshold with the server browser in NS2 (the 4096 in my router is the max I could set it to)

It must be dodgey code imho .. tbh .. if I were with UWE I'd put this very high in priority to get sorted, it effects so many routers and points to dodgy connection management

My biggest bugbear is why do I need to refresh 900+ servers just to refresh my favourites.. this is a plain example of one place where the server browser code was an after thought

About 2 weeks before launch, there was an overhaul of this screen, I think it was pushed in quick to have 'something' that resembles what people would expect in a server browser, which I appreciate and it got NS2 released in the month it was meant to be ;)

Alot of server info could be retrieved from central servers, some cached .. give a 'stop updating' option

If it's the actual mass pinging that's causing the problem.. ugh
I'll write something tonight and check if it's concurrent sessions or sessions over a period of time is the typical problem (if it's concurrent .. then fix is easy.. )

    Bal

ps. I've 5 dsl modem/routers at home (got bless ISPs that just send you one out when you join up with them) and I've one that doesnt have ANY problems.. will go back to one that does and check

I have posted a description of my problem and everything I tried/tested already on a related thread ( <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=123106&st=0)" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...23106&st=0)</a> but basically, 95% of the time, once I join a side after entering a server, my ping begins to raise to 999. Then I start to get the red plug symbol and shortly after my game freezes. I can randomly play fine on a server every once in awhile, usually when the server isn't full, but once it fills, my ping keeps raising.

I just bought a new Linksys E1200 router to see if it would solve my problem and I still get the same 999 ping problem. I had thought it was my router because, both times I disconnected my router and connected directly to my modem, I was able to play without a problem. But I only tried 1 server each time I did that and I must have been lucky because I tried connecting directly to my modem again. This time I tried 5 or 6 servers and had the 999 ping/red plug problem in each one. So now I believe the problem is with the built in Ethernet adapter on my motherboard (Asus M4N82 Deluxe motherboard). I still do not have any ping or connection problems with any other online game (over 10 games), video steaming, VoIP, and speed tests show I still have full speed. I'm using a wired connection and all my cables tested good.

Here is my log file: <a href="http://pastebin.com/tLv8P9Ek" target="_blank">http://pastebin.com/tLv8P9Ek</a>
    Here is my dxdiag: <a href="http://pastebin.com/JybGCTUW" target="_blank">http://pastebin.com/JybGCTUW</a>

Edit: I connected a spare PCI Ethernet card I had and I still have the same connection problems. I looked at my cable modem which is a RCA DCM425 which is made by Thomson Inc, so that could be the problem.

Second Edit: The RCA cable modem was the problem, I just had to reset the power on it and I haven't had any more problems for a few weeks now.

At the server list I get pings as low as ~30 but as soon i join a server and enter the game the ping spikes and proceeds upwards until it reaches 999, the red plug appears... Then the game freezes.

I'm having trouble viewing servers and connecting to servers. When I get new servers it will pull up about 2-5 empty servers. When I try to manually connect using the console command and a server ip it has a failed connection. Here are the logs for trying to connect to servers <a href="http://pastebin.com/a1pQrZEc" target="_blank">http://pastebin.com/a1pQrZEc</a> and here are my DxDiag logs <a href="http://pastebin.com/a1pQrZEc" target="_blank">http://pastebin.com/a1pQrZEc</a>

I am having a few issues:

When connected via a router directly with a cable, my server lists only populates if I set the max ping to 600, even then I do not receive that many servers in the list. Once I enter a server, My ping jumps around from 50 - 999.

I have forwarded all ports through the router for Steam Client and Steam Servers. I have tried it without any firewall enabled, still happens. I have used two routers.. Cisco EA 2700 (current one) and a Netgear WNDR3400v2. Both of them have the same issue.

If I remove the router and connect directly to my modem, I have no issues finding servers or with ping. Without the router I average 40-120 ping depending on what country the server is in. I have tried all suggested resolutions, however as long as a router is connected, I am unable to play this game.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same router as <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=124418&view=findpost&p=2034177" target="_blank">Garo</a> (cisco3825) with the same ISP, with similar router settings, if not the exactly same. He fixed his problem, mine persists. So it's (on my end) finding the right settings.

My error log shows that apparently I'm not connected to steam at all. Other games on steam work just fine. ?? Now I can't even get past the "can't authenticate" error. Previously I created a game/server without errors. Now I can't even do that.

    <a href="http://pastebin.com/1LvhfT1T" target="_blank">Log</a>
    <a href="http://pastebin.com/zkQskz8f" target="_blank">DxDiag</a>

    Please advise. I already tried <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=123251&view=findpost&p=2015311" target="_blank">*these steps </a> and a little QQ :F

UPDATE: I installed a fresh win7 on a new ssd, otherwise <b>exactly </b> same hardware, <b>exactly </b>same drivers. I did not alter router settings, but I changed my software firewall.. That damn nitpicky f-secure 2012. Eventhough I did have holes poked in it, I had permissions for ns2, but apparently it still decided that ns2 was to be blocked in some way.. Anyway, server list pops up as supposed to, joined game without problems :) Let's hope I don't get anymore problems with this one!

P.S. Did your troubleshooting steps have a "Turn off software firewall to test if ns2 works" ? I don't recall seeing advise like that. If you are having the same problem, try to change software firewall (EVEN if you have manually opened ports and given permits to .exe etc.), it sure as hell was the solution for me.

twice now since I first got NS2 I've had this connection problem. otherwise, I've seen the red plug once in a while but it seemed like normal internet flakiness and the connection with the server stayed.

today, for the second time I can't play NS2 at all. a few seconds after connection to any server the game times out. a constant ping of www.google.ca running in a window next to the game shows a time out for about 3-5 rows starting at the same time as the game connection issue. this is the same behaviour as the other day I had this problem, some weeks back. a constant ping running on another machine in the same network shows no timeouts at all.

I've read through many of the suggestions here. SSDP is disabled, uPnP too, I have the -tcp option on steam launch, I don't have a thompson router (linksys/cisco) and besides the logs on it show nothing. I wasn't surprised none of these things had any impact since nothing has changed in my setup in a long while.

here are the steps I took to get the log:

    1) launch NS2
    2) net_log 3
    3) connect 74.117.238.141 (we can rule out the server list completely)
    4) join team. in past tests, number of players, join of game made no difference. the issue happens on an empty server sitting in rr.
    5) game hangs

as I said, otherwise I have seen no problems whatsoever, just 2 separate days since I started that no server kept a connection.

the last time this happened I rebooted the router, upgraded its firmware and went meticulously through the settings, did a malware scan of my computer. nothing seemed suspicious but the next day the problem had gone.

for this log capture it took much longer for the issue to happen. I had been checking for router logs. normally it was under 20 seconds but this time more around a minute. the red plug showed but the connection came back for about 10 seconds. normally it's just a straight timeout.

I tried to switch wireless adapter and channel by doing so I also tried different wireless routers. However on this network all the routers tie into a shared connection. Everything was working fine the last few days just started this morning with no changes to anything.

I do see that local ping is dramatically more unstable than yesterday likely due to increased traffic on the cities internet connection (in the Dominican Republic internet gets owned if a lot of people in your city are on at the same time)

If any more info is needed just let me know. I will be trying again tomorrow so let me know if there is anything else I should test and send if it still is not working.

Changed back to original wireless router and it worked on the first try then I disconnected as to start a net_log 3 to get data seeing it working and then it stopped. So with no settings changes from same system it appears to randomly work and not work. I will keep retrying until it does and hopefully this can produce some useful data.
