What's your ideal # of players in a game?

For me 9v9's the minimum, the more the better. At one time before the game went retail one of the servers reached 45+ players (when the option to tune server size was there) and I had an absolute blast.

I simply refuse to play on the 16 player servers because NS for me is not a fun experience without lots of people - and I say this as someone who plays Aliens 80% of the time. I'm aware of the balance issues, and the possibility of egg lock. I still prefer larger game size.

Personally, I feel 16-18 is the best number. Any fewer and it becomes too much like a competitive game, where every single decision and death is critical, and especially for pubs, doesn't work because people will quit and the server would quickly die. 16-18 IMO keeps some of the strategy of a low-player game, while relaxing the penalty of deaths.

Any more than 18 though, and the game becomes less about strategy and more about just throwing more players at the other team until one side gives. It's impossible to sneak anywhere because there are always players roaming somewhere around the map, and killing something doesn't mean much because there are 5 other guys there.

Thankfully there are a variety of servers to choose from, I suppose.

I only ever seem to find 12p servers. The 16p servers are usually too full for me and 2 friends, or completely empty. Rarely join non official servers, because those that I have joined have generally been adminned by trolls, unfortunately. Got kicked from one for killing the admin. Sigh.
6v6 or 8v8 seems good to me, though on some maps it's pretty intense, and you have to hope the rest of the team is capable of communicating. If 3 or 4 players on your team don't have mics on a 12p server, it's usually bad news IMHO.

Personally I never like huge teams in any game. Too much chaos, not enough personal impact on the game.

This is about where I stand. I might go to 20 depending on my mood; sometimes it's fun to be in a crowded environment.

For me the sweetspot is 14 players. Everything above 18 players is bad.

When servers can handle 32 players, it would be cool to have 2 alien teams and 2 marine teams (4 comms), instead of a 16 vs 16.

edit: It sounds pretty weird when you leave out the word 'players' in the first two sentences.

Depends on the game. For NS2, 16-18 players seem to be the sweet spot. However, I've played some pretty awesome 10v10 L4D2 and 32v32 Empiresmod games.

I like 16 player servers, you can't sneak around in a 20+ player game.

    Agreed on all points.

High player counts obviously imbalances the game, although I think this could be circumvented to a degree with, well, larger maps. I'm crossing my fingers for a potential third race as well for higher player counts, although the game would have to be rebalanced yet again. If you include new technology, new lifeforms, entirely new map locations... NS3 anyone? :P

18 at the most, anything above 20 is just a derp fest.

I prefer games with 14-18 players per team, simply because the potential for all-ins goes way up once you can field more than 8 players at a time.

    least = 12, most = 18. For pubs, I'd say 16.

The default max should be lowered to 20, mods for higher

14-18 for me. 12 might be OK for competitive but when I play with that many players it feels a little empty. 20 is marginally acceptable but around that number and higher the game, as someone said so eloquently above me, is a derp fest. You can really feel the disruptions in balance when the game gets that full.

Wow that mod would be awesome. It could work like the last surviving team wins, meaning there could often be temporary gangups where sometimes both marine teams fight aliens or 1 alien + 1 marine vs the others, or just 4 teams fighting each other the whole game.

I like 16 player server max and no less than 12. 18 is doable.

    12-16 seems best to me.

There are overclocked servers that can handle 24-player servers, that would enable four teams of 6 or three teams of 8, so a many-team mod would be possible now.

There is already a marine-versus-marine mod in the works... It would be nice if one day that was extended to support an arbitrary number of teams. The problem is two-fold:

    1) Map sizes. There are only five tech points on most maps (four on NS1 conversions like Veil). With two teams competing for 5 tech points, the typical scenario mid-game is both teams have two points and compete for the third. But if you have four teams, everybody has one tech point, and competes for the second. I would argue that three teams is probably the most that's really workable on the current maps. Three teams competing for five tech points is a bit more sensible.

    2) What do you do when one of the teams is eliminated? Right now, an NS2 round ends whenever one team is eliminated. But with three or more teams, you have to account for when one or more teams have been eliminated, but there are at least two teams left. The game can't end yet, but you've got players who have nothing to do but wait. You could dump the eliminated teams into a spectator view, but in most cases that team would probably just leave the server.

16-18 usually. Less than that makes it stressful to command because you only have a limited number of troops to hold a specific number of locations. So it often depends on only one or two players to hold a location and you can rarely send others away if other locations get harassed.

I also find that too few players make Exos and Onos overpowered because you can't bring up enough combined fire power to deal with them.

I love those crazy L4D2 games, they are hilarious. Especially when someone misses the lift, or you get those epic charges that instakill 3 players or so :)

I do like the modded servers as well, where you have enhanced powers.

The netcode/zombies in L4D2 are just spot on.
