Yes the graphics card is not the best.

- This system should run the game on max without issues.

I was able to play the game just fine until 3-4 days ago, i believe after the patch?

Now after ive been playing the game for sometimes just a few min, i get Chop running through the hallways, I can put up a video of what im experiancing if it would help.

As a skulk running the hallways, not even in the big room i get little "jumps" and delays. (Infestation is on Min)

What is going on with this game?

That's not how it works though. You can't just arbitrarily switch different sorts of computations from GPU to CPU.

    <a href="http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GT+420&id=1420" target="_blank">http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?...420&id=1420</a>

But if the game used to run fine, the card isn't the issue obviously.

Have you tried turning off Hyperthreading? It isn't of much use in games and has been known to cause issues like stuttering in some.

The graphics card is more then capable, I think.... haha.
    - I run BF3 on MAX (Different engine but still)

Hyperthreading is not something i know how to control, is their a process to eliminate this? You used a great word to describe whats happening "Stuttering"

(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rscmqrFWac) found it, Ill try it out

I guess you didn't have that in BF3 then? :) Seems to be a problem in that game:

Nope not an issue, I disabled it and played abit at lunch but still have to do some more testing on hyperthread, ill keep it it updated.

    Ill try both games

    BF3

    and

    NS2

*another note, checked my temps after long periods of gaming and they are fine.

No improvment in NS2, Battlefield remained the same.

    - Turned graphics and ingame settings to zero, still was getting stuttering effects , It seems to happen later in most games...

What's your actual frame rate like, usually?

    Average around 30-40

    - I can get more exact numbers.

I've had the same issues since patch 230, FPS going crazy low when in big fights (5+ marines shooting).

I used to run the game flawlessly at max settings without any hiccups...

    Core i7 2.6 GHZ
    6GB DDR3
    Gforce 580 GTX Twinfrozr.

I can max out BF3 with zero lag, and same with this game, well that was before the patch...

Your core is not as fast but your graphics card is a beast, This is a good comparision to what im running. Means that it cant be GPU or PROC related. (well it could be but nothing to do with specs)

    - This has to be an ingame issue.....
  • RamirezRamirez Join Date: 2012-11-21 Member: 172752Members
Yeah, my core i7 is of the first models they released, but even today, it still lets me max out anything, and has no troubles supporting my more recent graphic card...

It's obviously an issue with the game since I was running it fine before the patch..

Ramirez i have your CPU, just get a cheap 60$ cooler ( i recommend water cooling) and OC that thing to at least 4 ghz.. the fps improvement is amazing.

@waflz take some screenshots (f12 key) of r_stats turned on in the console (~ key)
Interested to note if the "X ms waiting for GPU" is ever anything other than 0.
If it is.. then you are indeed bottlenecked by that low budget card.. which sells for under 40 bucks right now..

I love this game but I had to stop playing until some fix for this fps problem comes :( It's just too much pain in the ass trying to track the enemy when fights happen if the fps drops to 10-30. In big fights I really can't do anything even though my computer is pretty good and runs other games smoothly with high graphics. I've noticed infestation is usually dropping my fps a lot. And I do have all settings on lowest. Also tried some really low resolutions but no help.

EDIT: Could it be possible by the developers or modders to create some setting/mod to strip down EVERYTHING. Like the walls being one grey color, models really simple and everything reduced to nothing that possibly can? I love the gameplay and couldn't care less about the graphics.

GTX 420 barely qualifies as a gaming GPU. Check out performance reviews it gets maybe 1/3rd the FPS rate of a decent mid range GPU, which is generaly the bare minimum for smooth gaming on new games with settings above minimum.

No amount of CPU power can make up for a lacking GPU, and vice versa.

I'm not suprised your frame rates are low with that GPU, myself and others with GPUs 3-4x as powerful are also experiencing frame rate issues in certain scenarios.

Suggestions: Make sure AA is off, textures no higher then medium (looks almost the same) and infestation probably will need to be set to simple. Most of all, make sure Ambient Occolusion is set to off, as setting this to medium or high can eat 50% of your FPS in low performance areas.

    @Blzd

*I have to confirm now, Its the Zotac GTX 460
Thanks, The graphics on every other game are maxed and tapped, no reason why this game should be any different. *besides the point tho*

Even with everything set to ZERO, High prioirty... all the little ###### set to zero....

I still get stuttering effects, multiple people get this issue .

I will be upgrading my card very shortly :D so ill bring back ethier a yes or no to the problem fix with the upgraded card :D

Your most likely wasting your money. NS2 is really heavily dependant on CPU and upgrading graphics card won't help much if CPU is the bottle neck.

    Incorrect.
    His CPU:

Intel Core i7 3770K Unlocked Quad Core Hyperthreading Processor LGA1155 3.5GHZ Ivy Bridge 8MB Retail

He'll be better off than 90% of people playing this game with that cpu..
Though if in fact he DOES have a 460, and not a 420 , i would agree that upgrading wouldn't produce that better of results

This is all on empty server, Hyperthread off, High prioirty set.

    - I was unable to recreate the stuttering effect even with max graphics set. (something to do with full server?)

Theres a lot of complex geometry in the second wallview that you are getting low fps (Look at all the pipes).

As for what may have suddenly made your FPS drop, did you update your drivers? Or did windows update automatically do it? Sometimes with older cards, newer drivers perform worse, or exhibit odd behavior, but that GPU is going to have issues no mater what.. I've tested multiple GPUs with NS2 and most of them struggle at one point or another.

Oh, right, my mistake. Well if it makes you feel any better my GTX 680 can barely max the game out, dynamic infestation still dips to the 50s in some maps hive rooms, dynamic infestation is just plain brutal on it.

I installed the GTX 560 the other day, and what an amazing increase in performance. The other card was just not cutting it.

I will look for stuttering effects, see if i can recreate them. * we did just patch again... not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Yea did you see that "30 ms waiting for GPU" info in r_Stats??

That means your CPU is waiting on your GPU everytime.. in all those screenshots. You are definitely bottlenecked by that card.
    <a href="http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?gpu=GeForce+GTS+450&id=1" target="_blank">http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lo...TS+450&id=1</a>
Ensure that Vsync is OFF in your settings, btw.. it can create stuttering. (i saw in ur SS that it was off)

edit: something besides drivers to consider..(latest is 306.97) ns2 may not be using your card - when u open ns2 and ur sitting in the menu, hit the console and see what "Render Device" says?
And always disable ambient occlusion.. it eats up to 20 fps.

Glad to hear you have the 460 that's a much more capable card, and even above the GT 450 recommended requirements posted by UWE.

I have to imagine this is a driver issue, new Catalayst and nvidia drivers are coming out constantly and with automatic updates people are more likely to have the latest versions which UWE may not be able to test for.

C2D @ 3.8ghz + 5850 @ 1080p, FPS is generally fine (60+) until late game scenarios on populated servers. Also after playing for some time performance seems to drop, possibly memory leak related.
