Hallelujah!

As explained previously, I experienced the problem of the "red plug of doom" (ie having connection cut 10 seconds after having joined any server) and I have a Thomson router (more precisely a TG787).

I finally fand a solution, wich is initially a tip for Battlefield 3, for Thomson router owners. This is indeed related to inactivating SSDP Network Discovery at Windows level, and UPnP at router level:

In Windows Start Menu :

Start --> services.msc
Stop SSDP discovery service [SSDP network discorvery]--> anwer yes to the dialog box (to be done after each boot).

Control Panel --> internet/sharing center, "change advancing sharing settings" tab --> Turn off network discovery.

Ann then, in the box config (http://192.168.1.254)
--> routeur config menu--> UPnP tab --> inactive UPnP AV and UPnP IGD.

Note : I've done this method on the Thomson router provided by french Internet Provider Bouygues Telecom, Thomson routers from other IPs may be configurable slight differently.

An now I don't have any connection problem anymore ! :)

Ender 74 you should try that also and let us know

Hi,

I tried to play NS2 for the first time today and on every server I connect to, I get the red network icon after ~60 seconds. Eventually this results in a disconnect, however this takes a while so I usually just quit out.

log.txt: https://pastebin.com/a4WwTVBK
dxdiag.txt: https://pastebin.com/NpLMfbCE

My router is the Sky-branded Sagemcom F@ST 2504n, running firmware version 6.14.1a4N_UNI.

Yes exept for port-forwarding, which is mentioned in one of the Forum Links you posted.

Which ports does NS2 need? (My computer knowledge is generally not good, sorry)

For any Sky boradband customers:

My brother was getting red icon 999 ping 100% choke issue after being on a server for around 1-2 minutes. This was due to firmware issue which Sky rolled out to all of the customers routers. The issue forum can be found here:

http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Broadband-...ues/td-p/529736

This issue seems to affect NS2 as well as TS3 WoW and some other applications.

After quite a lenghty process my brother finally managed to get Sky to roll back his firmware version and he can now connect with no issues.

The rollback was done on the same day as build 229 so there is a chance that things changed in that build might have helped but I'm sceptical.

So if you are a Sky customer and suffering from connection issues, getting a firmware rollback is a gauranteed fix.

Hi,

I apologize if this has already been found, but I'm feeling too lazy to read through this whole thread.

Since I've bought it a week or two ago, I've been getting the red plug after maybe a minute of playing. net_stats shows that my ping is jumping up to the 2000s or 3000s before my game freezes up.

I've found an odd workaround, though. Opening up the server list from the ESC menu drops my ping back down to normal for a few minutes (1-2, sometimes 3 minutes). After that, it will start to climb again. Opening the server list again drops it back down. Rinse, repeat. It's allowing me to play, technically, but as you can imagine, it really sucks when it happens mid-battle. Not sure why this works, but I figured I should let you guys know at least.

My router is a Netgear WNDR3400, and this is the only game I've ever had with connection problems like this. If you need any more information, let me know.

Couldn't fit it in pastebin, but here's the log: http://codepad.org/rIapuaNT
Screenshot from the match that the net_log came from (ping ended up just above 3000 before the actual crash): http://i.imgur.com/5iS0R.jpg

Also, I'm using a wired connection.

I've been unable to join any game since the latest patch. I've attached my log below if it's any use.

I've always had problems connecting to games, making the game virtually unplayable but this has gone a step worse. I used to get "Timeout error" all the time joining a new server, but this is because I've got a thompson router from O2. Now I'm unable to do anything as I get "Cannot communicate with server" errors.

Also just as another test I can ping the IP address that the server is sitting on:

Just to add the drama and diagnosis....

The server list is locking up my thompson router now and that appears why I can't connect to the server. After clicking "Play >>>>" it waits a long time before any server appears in the list and I can't refresh websites and mumble disconnects. According to the router the broadband link is still up, then after a few moments the link disconnects and it takes approximately 2 - 3 minutes to right itself.

By which time the server list has appeared and I can select any of them to join. Then I still get the cannot communicate error.

No other game is doing this it appears:

- League of Legends works fine refreshing their server list and connecting to games.
- SC2 appears fine listing custom games.

I've applied Zeb's fix and the -tcp option. Both have no affect. I don't have root access to the router so I can't apply most of the other fixes suggested.

What on earth is your server browser doing that is causing so many problems?

Wow I'll try that I soon as I get home tonight. You should have PM me with this, so I found out about your solution earlier :D

Anyway this has never been really game-breaking for me, I'm used to joining via steam friends (less easy now that there are way more players, so servers are easily full), or typing "retry" in the console after being dropped by the server. If you get this issue, do not despair, it just take a little bit longer to join games but it's all worth it.

I'll ask GuneeYouFix to try this as well, being in the same situation as me.

This could be a solution for all Bouygues Telecom (french ISP) Thomson TG787 users. To my knowledge Bouygues provides either Thomson or Sagem routers. AFAIK Sagem routers do not have those issues. But asking for a router change might be too much to ask.

I'll give update on this as soon as I can.

*edit: Doesn't seem to work for me. Maybe I did something wrong but I think I did all 4 changes correctly. :(

Hi,

Also experiencing the red plug problem since the newest patch:

ISP: Sky (UK) ***I know there is information on sky in your first post and I have read this. I have spoken to Sky on the phone and they said my firmware was last updated in AUGUST. Therefore, assuming they haven't lied to me, I have an issue because NS2 was working fine before the latest patch)***
Router: Sagemcom F@ST2504n (firmware: 6.14.1a4N_UNI)
Connection: Wired connection (have also tried wireless with same issue)

1) Server list loads quickly (no issues here)
2) Join server (again, loads quickly)
3) Problem starts here - sometimes I get the red plug before even joining a team but mostly I get to spawn and within 5-10 seconds I'm red plugged. I can see other players' models just frozen. I can move around but I'm clearly not connected any more.
4) The next step is to exit NS2.
5) There are no issues with my network after quitting (no d/cs, can browse fine)

As a side note I am also experiencing an issue with Heroes of Newerth in that I can connect and play on their servers but I cannot connect to the in game chat servers

net_log 3: http://pastebin.com/E7X03CnF

dx_diag: http://pastebin.com/PHRHD3MB

I forgot to get a screenshot of the scoreboard but I know that all player names were there and my ping was 48ms (not really sure how key the screenshot is..)

Hi, I also get the red plug problem with 999 ping.

It can happen very quickly (in ready room) or after 30min (1h if I'm lucky) of game..

I hope this is helpfull so you can fix this in the next build :)

Definitely gonna need to get access to that router to attempt the fixes.
The Thomson routers are susceptible to flooding it seems. Just google "thomson router flooding" to see the amount of results.
It seems like it might be tied with steam somehow..

Did you try limiting the server refresh rate as shown in the first post?

Yes, didn't help much. The -TCP thing did for a while, but the latest patch has undone all that.

Not sure if it can help you, but in my case, when I clik on Play the server is empty at first.

Then I click on Update, and I have to wait for about 1 minute for servers to appear. Then I can update the list and join server listed.

Whatever, if you have connection problem, don t forget to also try launching Steam by executing "Steam.exe -tcp", it seems to work better.

Today I've got a Red Plug with 999 ping, started the net_log 3, log.txt
Also, I have a demo file but it's about 1 hour in duration )))
I was playing and the RPOF appeared, everyone stopped except of myself, and in about 20-30 sec all returned to normal.

Hi there,

I connect to a server (if a server list happens... maybe 1/3 of the time) it tried to authenticate then I timeout. I have yet to connect to a server in maybe 30 tries? Other games like TF2, HoN, SC2 all work...

I have a CLEAR spot Voyager router... it's very strange, I connect it via USB to my computer and it picks up a 4G signal.

I tried pretty much every fix on here I could find, did
-tcp
made sure windows firewall is off
reinstalled/verified files
setting max ping to 500
retry after failed connection
changing the masterserver file or w/e
tried favoritng servers... nothing

Here is my log: http://pastebin.com/Fsc7ctVs

If i try to go to Explore mode, there is text saying "Explore More Press F4 for Lobby" but the game is unresponsive and the rest of the screen is black. This is the log that that: http://pastebin.com/mucNwri1

EDIT: As of version 232, i can now join explore mode properly. Servers still don't work.

I get disconnected from games seemingly randomly, but possibly related to combat.

http://pastebin.com/QLmZ99S8

win 7 64 bit home premium, kaspersky Internet Security (which was disabled at the time)

The game locks up my internet connection and the PC loses connection to the router. The PC reconnects about 20 seconds after closing NS2. This issue is only related to NS2, and none of my other HL2 based games. Router is a netgear DG834G v2 wireless router and is connected to PC by ethernet cable. My ISP is talktalk. This game i was playing marine and the game crashed while i was fighting a skulk.

Edit***

Tried disabling SSDP service, UPnP on router and network discovery but still got D/Ced in game. Got a good 10 mins this time and we where doing well :(

(just FYI I've fixed this for my router .. can read below)

I can reproduce this loads of times if you need :P

Problem:
From clean.. start NS2 (without having run it previously for at least 5 min)

Go to 'Play' .. server browser.. let it update away .. around 777 servers, try join one, it'll give the connection error (server browser fails to update from now on until my machine 'settles')

Now .. at the same time, I can no longer ping any other machine or browse .. however any connects I have open are ok (eg steam chat, google talk etc)

I also had a ping going on another device, while my machine was knocked out, the other device was ok

My Router logs show spamming of

192.168.1.247 exceeds the max. number of session per host!

My Router is a 'Zyxel P-660HW-T1 v3'

The fix is ->

CODE

Network > NAT > General
Max NAT/Firewall Session Per User : [b]Change from default 1024 to the max 4096[/b]

I can only assume NS2 is firing off a huge number of pinging threads instead of throttling somehow?

I had been experiencing all of the network problems (red connection, 999 pings, unable to establish connection, no servers in list, unable to authenticate, getting disconnected from internet (it only seemed.. but router is effectivly stopping you creating new sessions for a timeout period)

My advice .. check your router logs if you're experiencing something similar.. see if there are limits in your NAT and Firewall sessions

Your router is the most likely culprit .. there will no doubt be logs on your routers admin screen .. these should point to some threshold reached.. it'll be your firewall or some limit on 'sessions per host' for some setting (or similar wordings)

Varies from modem/router to modem/router ;) what's yours?

Typically, in windows, if you go to the command prompt and type ipconfig .. take note of the Gateway IP and try http to it
eg.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-vista-run-box/

type in ipconfig and you'll see something like

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.27.161.101
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.27.161.1

so I'd put in browser, http://10.27.161.1 and it brings me to my routers admin screen .. you might need passwords to get past this screen (if you're connected via LAN you might not .. connected via WIFI you probably would)

From there, there should be some 'system' menu or some administration menu where you can view logs ... check all the links ;)

I would expect if your router is putting your IP on a timeout it'll mention it in the logs ;) .. sorta like a naughty step for bad computers

I still can't get telnet access to the router but here's the alternative...

Log into your router as SuperUser:
-> (for O2 routers it is http://192.168.1.254)
-> The password is the serial number on the bottom of the O2 box.

save your router config:

to do this:
-> first tab on the menu (mine is O2 wireless box 2)
-> configuration (on the left)
-> main display area: under Pick a Task
-> choose Save or Restore Configuration
-> click Backup Configuration Now...
-> save it where you want
-> (note this is also where you restore the router config from a file, which you'll need to do)

-> Open the user.ini in notepad/wordpad, search for ids.ini section (about half way down) and change the first line from this:
config state=enabled trace=disabled
-> to this:
config state=disabled trace=disabled
-> Save the changes then restore your config from that file.

to do this:
-> first tab on the menu (mine is O2 wireless box 2)
-> configuration (on the left)
-> main display area: under Pick a Task
-> choose Save or Restore Configuration
-> click Choose File
-> locate the user.ini file
-> click Restore Configuration Now...
-> Accept all messages

The router will then reboot and will no longer block UDP spamming

I repetedly get the red plug icon bug. I have a thomson router but I won't be shuting UPnP off because I need it on to play other games and it's no solution to turn it on and of over again.

here is my ingame log file after I experienced two time the red plug icon http://pastebin.com/hgEDwagv

and here's my dxdiag: http://pastebin.com/AiYLB0dh

I also get the occasional autentification error as well as the blank server page but I didn't get them while recording this log file.

Edit: Oh and by the way I have a ethernet cable conecting my pc to the router which is a Thomson TG784n.

Sorry Luminoth but given the infamous history behind that router I'm afraid its the only solution available.
This isn't isolated to NS2 either, as others have posted in here, fixes have come from users trying AAA titles like BF3.. It really is a crap router.
What games do you use that need UPnP anyways??
• LuminothLuminoth Join Date: 2012-11-16 Member: 171739Members
Well I play alot of CoD MW2 and 3, in which I often host parties, which for you need UPnP. Isn't there a way to open a specific NS2 port or is the problem I'm experiencing completely unrelated?

Can anyone explain to me why this started happening the 2 latest builds for me?
I have had no problem during beta and after release, that is until now...

Iam a ns2 addict but this crazy stuff have ruined so many games and is making me quit playing

and here: http://pastebin.com/CP6Sf266 <- DXDIAG

either way i came from this topic i created. http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...123192&st=0
Worked in beta fine, exomechsuit patch came out and I could no longer establish any connection to any server in existence. Problem persists after release, never crashes, always gives ######head message that pisses me off.

k fix it thanks, see ya when your job is done. sour.
