Thanks to <a href="http://ns2servers.devicenull.org/" target="_blank">Devicenull's server performance monitoring site</a>, we can do a more thorough job of linking server specs to performance. Here's a list of the server specs (I could find) linked to devicenull's performance monitor site.

Also, any server owners/operators who want to post (or correct) their server specs please do so (with the server IP) and I'll add it to the list.

It's really worth mentioning that any server perfs that you inspect that show a long time on a stale map (4+hrs or greater) are near enough useless to determine hardware performance, as the software starts to cause issues unless it's nudged along from map to map frequently (<3hrs to be safe)

You are my hero. Very useful information to have..... What would be VERY awesome is postings with peak processor/memory load stats.

    On a less serious note:
I would like graphs. And charts. Colors are preferred. Sweeping curves. Much data to organize.

I just confirmed that this can't be done with the current data outputted, but I made a request for it, though I doubt we'll see anything until after v1.0. I've personally been pushing for a better way to compare server performance to specs for a while so we can get out of the realm of anecdotes into the realm of data.

Well, to be honest, I meant that it would be nice if server ops could provide it. I will try to post the info from the TP server (jest box) ASAP. Have to get it populated first.

    Hello gentlemen,

I figured I'd contribute to the cause here and share the data I have.
I run the [GG] servers. I currently have 4 running on this one box. All of these are 24 player.
I've been watching the console output for my servers (And lol'ing pretty hard at the rage but I digress ...) and been seeing quite a few complaints on lag.

    Here is the hardware specs:
    2x Xeon E5-2620s @ 2.00 Ghz
    64GB DDR3 1333 ECC REG RAM
    6x 300GB SASII 15K - RAID 10
    2x bonded 1Gbps Links

Here is the chart from [GG] #3
    <img src="http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/765/gg3s.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Here is the chart from [GG] #22
    <img src="http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/5364/gg22.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Server side usage (Just from me watching it. I do not have actual numbers):
    CPU: ~15 - 20% (24 Logical cores)
    RAM: ~800MB - 1.25GB per instance
    NET: ~1.7 Mbps per instance

Regardless, it seems that the server runs fairly well on the E5 series processors if I do say so myself. I'd expect better performance out of the 2690 which is clocked in at 2.9Ghz. The graphs don't really show the actual tickrate very well, but I've noticed it hovers around 12 - 20 on average and takes a hard dive to single digits every now and then.

I believe this particular setup could be used for high density, medium slot servers (16 - 20).

I plan on bringing up a few more smaller ones and see how they perform.

What do you guys think? Maybe speed is the answer here O.o

Thanks for posting your server specs! However, those specs and the graphs you posted shows your hardware is having trouble handling running NS2, at least with 24 players. The best performing servers don't show any tickrate drop, acceptable ones never drop below 20, and at the very least it should always stay above 10. Your servers are dropping down to a tickrate of 0. I'd suggest either upgrading to the 2.9GHz hardware or dropping your playercount down to 8-10 players.
  • WhosatWhosat Singapore Join Date: 2006-11-03 Member: 58301Members, Reinforced - Shadow
Yes sir, 2.0 Ghz is pretty low for a NS2 Server. You should only be running 8-10 players max with that speed. That would be the reason for this:

    Hey ScardyBob,

Thanks for the info. I'm going to run some 12 and 16 player servers and see how they go.
I am also going to experiment with the 2.9Ghz hardware

I do have one question (Apologies if I missed the answer somewhere):
Is work under way to make the server application more multi-core friendly?
  • endarendar Join Date: 2010-07-27 Member: 73256Members, Squad Five Blue
Making the server more multi-core friendly is a double edged sword really. Sure it would be nice to have a server take advantage of multiple cores, to achieve the required performance. But that would mean less servers per physical host. The time spent making it parallel could probably be better spent reducing the actual amount of cycles required to achieve the same goal.

I'm not sure how most game servers are run, but I believe its mostly a single core experience.
  • GnolevilGnolevil Join Date: 2012-11-02 Member: 166143Members
Partly the reason I was curious about the multi core part was due to the current market of high end enterprise level processors. The current E series Xeon lineup does not focus on speed. They have a lower clock, but their architecture and sheer core count make them able to some serious work. For example, their E7-4850 has 10 cores clocked at 2.0Ghz. The fastest core they have right now is the E5 - 2690 @ 2.9Ghz (Turbo 3.8 Ghz).

Personally, I think of the Xeons vs i5/7 as freight trains vs sports cars. They are not as fast, but can move a lot.

Anywho .. I do have some data for the 2690. I installed two into my server last night and got some great data from it.
Firstly, the boost in clock rate did help. The jump from 2.0 to 2.9 did make a noticeable difference. My 24 player server runs much better. The rubber banding issue is gone, but the tick rate still gets hit hard.

    <a href="http://ns2servers.devicenull.org/detail.php?id=11432" target="_blank">[GG] #22 - 24 Players</a>

Here is the 16 player server. So far, it's running very well.

    <a href="http://ns2servers.devicenull.org/detail.php?id=13328" target="_blank">[GG] #5 - 16 Players</a>

I also did some testing regarding the Turbo Boost for Xeons. The server application does not put enough load on the processor, even with a full 24 players, to fully activate the turbo boost. The 2690, for instance, runs at 1.2 Ghz idle (X9DRI-LN4F+ -> You need to enable EIST (Speed stepping) in order to enable Turbo). Under a fully loaded server, the CPU will only rise to 1.4 - 1.6 Ghz.
I supposed I could try this again and disable HT and lock each instance to 1 core.

I'll add our newest server rental, since Multiplay doesn't seem to be on this list.

We rent from <a href="http://www.multiplaygameservers.com/" target="_blank">Multiplay Game Servers</a>, the same servers as UWE's official ones.

Our gaming community wanted one that was close to us (the majority of us live in Vancouver, BC, Canada), or at least west coast, and we used to run a Seattle location with NFO for NS1 for many years. We were wanting to go back to NFO for all the years of good service, but they were unable to provide us with a server at time of writing. NS2servers.com was another provider we were looking at, and we were looking forward to their California location, but that is no longer in the works, and Las Vegas is now their most westward location (we were not getting good routing to that location from our computers).

So, Multiplay was one of the few last options. It wasn't an instant setup as the Seattle location had not yet had NS2 installed. About 4 hours later, we were good to go with 16 slots. Immediately, the routing was quite nice for our members, however, the server rate was fluctuating between 10 and 30. While many of the gaming community said it was okay, myself, having played a lot on many servers, especially those on NS2servers, the servers weren't performing. While the game itself seemed smooth to play, my hit reg was quite poor.

I sent another support ticket and got an answer within 2 hours. They agreed the server was performing poorly, so they decided to move us to another one, which they claim has an Intel E3-1270, and from their website, each NS2 instance is on its own dedicated core. Another 2 hours later, they were ready to move us. Ever since then, the server has been performing awesome! Server rates average anywhere between 29 and 30 (<a href="http://ns2servers.devicenull.org/detail.php?id=16114" target="_blank">graph here</a>). I bumped it up to 18 slots from 16, and the server is still performing the same. No lag. Great hit reg. Low latencies.

We're quite happy with the results! Multiplay comes highly recommended. Not that I have a lot of experience with web administration, but their Clan Forge web admin system seems great, which also allows you to upgrade slots/services, etc., in a self-service fashion. And there is a Clan Pay system, which allows members (or anyone else with the URL link for that matter) to donate to and automatically credit the account (via cc and PayPal).

Support response times for their ticketing system average between 2 to 6 hours, which is reasonable. Their support staff seem friendly too. They do have a live support chat that is not always on 24/7, but close to (they cite staff shortage), and they're reasonably friendly and knowlegeable for a Tier 1 first point of contact.

There has been loads of talk just a while back about the Turbo Boost feature. Something about changing the C-something state in the BIOS. Try searching it.

16-player servers need around 3.4 GHz to maintain a stable tick rate (UWE Official Servers run at 3.5GHz from what I understand, and they still suffer slightly at the end game sometimes. One of their servers crashed and was locked out after playing a 40-minute game where the entire map was fully cysted less one marine base).

    Hey Whosat,

Regarding the Turbo Boost feature, you do need to enable c-state in the BIOS (For this particular motherboard). However, that feature downclocks the CPUs when they are not significantly loaded. Since these motherboards are enterprise level boards, you cannot edit clock rates.

Since then, I have migrated our servers to another dedicated box with the following specs:
    Xeon E3-1270 @3.4Ghz
    8GB RAM ECC
    2x 1TBs - RAID1

I'm currently running 4 servers on that box and they are doing quite well. The 24 palyer is averaging around 25 ticks. The 20 player servers are 29-30.
I think it might be safe to say that ~3.4 Ghz is the safe number for a solid 20 player.

Here are the links to devicenull if you want to check them out:

Unfortunately this page needs to be updated.

Everyone single link is dead because of an issue with Device Null's server - it wiped everyone's server in the beginning of Dec and then when it came back it gave everyone new links.

The devnull links just show blank stat pages for me (I think probably for the reason CoTToN pointed out).

I have an opportunity to acquire a Xeon x3470 3.0ghz 8GB ram server at no cost (it's at my house right now, and I don't think its owner really cares to keep it anymore, not to mention he owes me quite a bit of cash - interest free too.) Also, getting a reliable pipe for hosting services from my house will cost me about $50 a month more than I pay now (not a huge deal) and I can easily allocate 3Mb to this purpose 24/7.

This will be running bare-metal (as in, no VM) with no other services running. How many players could that support? And is it worth the monthly price for the connection, or would it be cheaper to get a suitable VPS?

Yes the links all reset. You can also browse all servers <a href="http://ns2servers.devicenull.org/" target="_blank">here</a> if you are looking for a specific one.

That processor is a 2.93 and up to 3.6ghz turbo. I suspect you could probably run an 18 player server. That's just going off clock speed, it is a bit older tech so maybe a few less. Be sure turbo boost is on in the bios, and make sure in Windows the energy settings are set to high performance. It's not hard to set up and try...

What speed connection do you have now and what are you quoting the extra price for?

    All

I thought I would post our servers up in here. I look after the T W A T servers (Team Work And Tactics).

We have just installed a new dedicated box in the UK heres the specs

    Intel i7 3930k running @ 4.6GHz (all the time)
    16GB Corsair Vengence RAM @ 1600MHz
Dual Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSDs in RAID 1

This is running the client 4920 build so we can fully comply with the ENSL consistency checking.

Any servers running on this box will be on the IP 91.204.210.71 and will be identified in game with 4.6GHz appended to the name.

Our original dedicated server is installed in France near Paris and the spec of this is...

    Intel Xeon E5-1620 @ 3.6GHz
64GB RAM ECC (not sure of the speed, I didnt build it)
    Dual Intel 320 SSD 120GB

I will be putting all different kinds of servers up all the time so keep an eye out in the game list and I hope to see some of you guys on there.
