General question regarding cheating/hacking

Seeing as the source code of NS2 is out in the open for anyone to view/edit/modify. Doesn't this give griefers/hackers/cheaters an immense opportunity?
Just something I was wondering, could be wrong of course

In the very near future there will be consistency checks upon joining servers to make sure you are not running any modified game code. Between that, VAC, and vigilant server admins, I doubt cheating will be any more prevalent in this game than any other.

yea. I remember when NS1 ran punkbuster or whatever third-party anti-cheats. and was so buggy sometimes....

The source code of NS2 is not available to the public at all. It's a closed source engine.

The source code of NS2 IS available to people who have purchased the game.

The source code for Spark, the engine NS2 runs on, is not available.

A lot depends on when and what kind of tools the admins get. Right now we for example know that all the necessary spectating options aren't going to make it into first releases. That's already a huge issue for any serious admin work.

In theory yes but I have yet to see anyone I could identify as cheaters.

anti-cheats don't stop hackers anymore than key registry on software stops pirates. The best anti-cheat is VAC as it's non-intrusive and can't be abused because it's automatic. The way to never see a hacker in your game is to play on servers with active moderators, I guarantee you won't see many in your lifetime if you play on one.

I hate punkbuster with a passion, therefor I uttelry refuse to pay for and play a game uning PB. It is buggy as hell, Dons't Do what it is sopose to do and many PB enabled servers I played in the past was ripe with hackers. All the bad experience with PB has made me have enough and I am done with anythin PB related

The best thing against cheaters are still servers with active admins.
