<div class="IPBDescription">Title in a nutshell</div>Heya guys.

So I recently decided to install ns2 again, my previous setup was incapable of running the game and I wanted to play around with it again and am toying with the idea of writing a hands on for NS2.

So, my problems simple:

The game launchs, i get a black screen but the mouse icon is there. I can hear the music and i can move the mouse to select menu items (cant SEE the menu)

Any clues here?

Ive tried running it in admin, running it in windowed, forcing dx9, deleting appdata, verifying the game cache, etc.

Really looking for something that isnt reinstalling, because the game keeps saying in console 'ID3DXEffectCompiler: There were no techniques' followed by 'ID3DXEffectCompiler: Compilation failed'

I have exactly the same problem. I played a long time ago and just decided to try again. Steam went through a "updating to more efficient format" process and then downloaded some more content and now I get a black screen with music.

    Solution <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=118991&view=findpost&p=1945082" target="_blank">here</a>:
<!--quoteo(post=1945082:date=Jun 19 2012, 07:28 PM:name=ScardyBob)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (ScardyBob @ Jun 19 2012, 07:28 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1945082"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->So I just ran into this problem on my laptop. Essentially, Steam popped up saying it was fiddling with my NS2 files and after it finished NS2 loaded with a blackscreen and this spammed in console:
    ID3DXEffectCompiler: Compilation Failed
    ID3DXEffectCompiler: There were no techniques

To fix it I had to do the following:
    - Deleted local content for NS2 via steam
    - Deleted the NS2 folder in the AppData directory (e.g. \AppData\Roaming\Natural Selection 2)
    - Deleted the NS2 folder in the Steam directory (e.g. \Steam\steamapps\common\Natural Selection 2)
    - Redownloaded NS2

It seems the 'Delete local content' option in Steam doesn't fully get rid of all NS2 files, which is why I needed to manually delete those others.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    thanks for that.

Didn't fix the issue ,but revalidation after reinstalling entirely fixed it?

    Very confusing.

Try altering your AA Preferences in your FX Driver. Turn them to application mode.
