Because I can empty 3 entire clips into a Alien and it just won't die. With 3/3 Upgrades on both sides.

Its easier to blame the gun, than the aim of the shooter...

(tho to be fair, if you play on a high ping server with low tickrates its not a shame to have troubles aiming)

Well i just played with a guy (inv.duck) who i hit over and over and wouldnt die. Also he knew where i was at all times. I think it is some kind of hack people are using.

The "hack" is your poor aim

There are hitreg and lag issues effecting aim. There is such a thing as really really good players, check out the clans to find out who. There is such a thing as 3d sound to know where the enemy is.

Practice aiming, get better. Play on low ping servers. Hit reg does go bad sometimes, but it's far from unplayable early game.

Can individual mods make the player invincible? I was wondering about using personal mods to change your game a bit, because I'm assuming you can use your own mods even if they're not the same as someone elses mods in the game you're playing. I need to learn more about NS2 mods. Does anyone have a tut I can read? I'd like to start using them now.

There would have to be something seriously wrong with NS2's network update model for client mods to be able to affect server-side health.

I beleive that inv.duck is a member from the competetive team inversion. You probably just got out skilled combined with the currently bad hit reg and possible ping. I mean isn't it a little weird that the new players can see this issue while we just tell you to get better aim? tip: most players just empty their gun while they are tracking an alien. Try to shoot in burst when you know you will hit so you just don't end up standing with your pants down reloading. btw: what lifeform was inv.duck playing as most of the time?

Sadly there is no official procedure to report hack, the last thread about it was closed by an admin: "cheat is not our problem, see with the server owner".

But in your case you probably just got owned by a decent player.

    *sigh*

Again, I am sure it was just your aiming. I'd like to point out that I was even accused of hacking while playing as a fade a few hours ago. Any of you who have played with me should find that pretty laughable (I'm a pretty average player I think). That's just a trend I'm seeing with the influx of new folks.

He did it as a marine and an alien. His shots never missed. He could see where i was in dark rooms. I would shoot him in the face and he wouldn't die. He kept coming up with excuses why he was killing me like blaming it on lag or that he got lucky. It's not cool to cheat against new players.

You can't give yourself more health or be invulnerable with client side mods. You can be located in dark rooms with the minimap.

It's not cool to falsely call people out as hackers.

Aiming or hacking or whatever aside, the guns do feel rather weak. I suppose partly it's because most of the aliens don't really react to being shot until they die, which can take quite a long time in some cases.

Also with guns like the rifle, you need a lot of actual bullet hits to kill things, which feels weird in a competitive multiplayer FPS game. It's more what I'd expect from a super tough singleplayer mook or something, but they are generally the exceptions to the rule and also generally have some reaction animations to being shot.

Basically the guns do 'feel' weak when you use them a lot of the time.

He gets killed consistently by one of the players who belongs to possibly the best clan in NS2, and NS1, and rather than accept he is being beaten by an experienced pro, he claims hacker.

Go away, there is nothing to see here. It's a good job you're not playing NS1 as you'd be calling EVERY player a hacker. NS is a very high skilled game, with annoying movement mechanics and all sorts of assistance in game, so you almost always know where enemies are, Obs tracking, scans for marines and hive sight/ parasite for aliens.

Instead of crying because someone with years and years of experience is better than you, just go get some more experience and be better yourself :)

Hmmm wonder if we could have the skin models change with health so that as a skulk gets lower in health it has more fluro green blood oozing out of wounds.
Would be a nice little indicator, a lerks wings could show up with holes in the span etc, granted most wont be overly visibly but by using a bright fluro green or similar for the blood colour you will have a visual colour change on a more injured skulk or Onos.

Could also be an interesting way to limit camo, if alien is injured green wounds show up but rest of alien still cloaks...but there is a blood trail for the marines to watch out for.
An alien with 90% or more health has no tell tale signs, an alien with say 60-90 has a small number and sub 50% has a lot of visible wounds.
Bear in mind these can be simple skins and are not meant to reflect actual damage being done...cant be much different than the cloaking code but trigger is health not speed/time.

Its funny that someone who is new to the game knows who is cheating. I play this over 1,5 years now and i cant remember a single official cheat detect.

Right now, players with over 1000 hrs of gameexperience slaughters players that bought the game 2 day ago.

But instead: "Hey, im new to the game, i have to learn so much stuff cause its an complex game" its: "After 3 hrs im a pro and i know whats going on. This guy is cheating, blabla".

Treffnix had stats of 75-0 yesterday and with the help of an good com, veterans nearly never die these day.
I saw skulks running straight to marines in a long corridor, Gorges try to attack an base alone without bilebomb, fades swipe like idiots and hit nothing.
1 Skulk can survive in an marinebas for ages, cause 6 marines are unable to kill him.

I saw games where 6 marines where on 1 side of the map (running in packs of 5 players minimum seem to be the tactix nr1 theses days) and all die on 1 skulk where Treffnix hold alone the other side of the map vs 6 skulks.

well a lot of players, expecially new players would have a hard time against any inv. player. They are a good clan and you can see some of there games on the NS2HD channel.

It seems that a lot of pleople who talk about how long it takes to kill an aliens just have bad aim

I've been on the end of hacking accusations a couple of times. I actually found it kind of funny. It was a game with few (8 or so) players, I was marine, and these skulks just kept trying to hide from me or run at me where I could quite easily see them. Yes I took this with my phone as it was in my hand at the time so was convenient:
    <img src="http://i.imgur.com/owliP.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

EDIT: EHHH CRAP, I forgot how maybe young-forum-browser-unfriendly that image was.. if it's too obscene I'll remove :)

So to the OP: It was PROBABLY a mixture of the other players skill, lag of sorts, and your potential lack of skill. Better luck next time!

<i>edit: Took the liberty of censoring the swearing in the image --Zaggy</i>

Yeah, well it is to be expected with all these new players who dont really know how to play the game or know how it works yet. Give it time and let the players get a feel for the game and in the meantime, ignor their immature remarks

nah, inv.duck is just a good player. if you want to really rage, play against fana or some of the DS| folks.
  • RyneRyne Join Date: 2012-02-25 Member: 147408Members, NS2 Map Tester
    1) Don';t be so hasty in throwing the word hacking out. There are people out there with VERY good aim. Also, it is very easy to "Track" people via sound, minimap, and just plain intuition

    2) Hit reg and lag are still an issue, so this will affect aiming. You just have to be a surgeon with your shots and "hit" everyone to be effective.

I feel that one factor that contributes to this problem is skulk carapace.

When Carapace is evolved, skulks get a whopping +40 armor, which is 20 more than the first natural selection, and in comparison with the Lerk and Fade's +50.
It basically doubles the effective health of a free life form, and frankly shouldn't be that effective to anybody but the Onos in my opinion, who btw has a 4% stronger slowing effect due to carapace.

I play without cara most of the time cause i dont like the speed penalty.

Regen and celerity + silence maybe are my fav upgrades. Same as Fade. (Adrenalin is a must for Fade also)
If Rines didnt hit, they didnt hit the cara skulk also. Maybe they hit the cara skulk more, cause he is slower.
    But, doesnt seem so.

on the subject of hacking, and I am not making any accusations or anything here, but does anyone know how secure the LUA implementation is? I know that the game allows certain mods to run clientside like menu mods and such, but what is to stop someone from making some form of hack in the clientside LUA interface

It's nice to know you have a build that works for you, but that's a red herring.
    <i>
"Why should we change X when I use Y instead and am also successful?"</i>

But I'll entertain the notion. I actually have a far easier time when Hive 1 is a Shift or Shade. It's when I notice the Crags. Always the Crags.

To put things into perspective, these are the benefits from carapace across the board:

Gorges get +55.2% effective health and an 8% movespeed reduction
Lerks get +57.1% effective health and a 15% movespeed reduction
Fades get +28.6% effective health and a 12% movespeed reduction
The Onos gets +28.6% effective health and <12% movespeed reduction(numbers not updated for 215 yet)
Skulks get <!--coloro:red--><span style="color:red"><!--/coloro--><b>+89% effective health</b><!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> and an 8% movespeed reduction

    Edit: Math is super hard

    Nothing. It's been done.

You couldn't increase your health that way though. Tampering with your client-side health value would not actually let you live any longer.
