Hello!

Natural Selection 2 has come a long way since Fall 2009 and the competitive scene is starting to launch off and as a result we're going to take the first step towards real competition. So without further ado let me introduce you the first of many Night Cups to come!

Welcome to the first NS2 BETA Night Cup. It will take place on May 26.-27. and signups will close on May 25th. The cup will be double-elimination so that means everyone gets to play at least 2 matches. Since it is the first Night Cup and we're still experimenting with all the NS2 rules and stuff and we're always open to suggestions (please use our forums Suggestion section). And because of this we're locking down the team slots to 8 (if there's more intrest we might go as high as 10).

Awesome zh'! Let me know if you would like your cup to be cast live / recorded / both.

    Couple of questions:
    1. Is this going to be an international tourny (i.e. can NA or AUS/NZ teams apply) and, if so, how are you going to handle server ping issues?

    2. I'm a bit confused about this rule:

QUOTE

There are 4 maps that will be played, one each round. When there is a draw, the first of the backup maps will be played that are specific to each round.

Does this mean that one matchup of teams will consist of the best out of 5, where you play each round on a different map? Also, considering that summit and turtle are the primary competitive play maps, what are the other 2 maps you're proposing to include?

Thanks and looking for to this :)

The Night Cup is international so everyone around world can participate, but we're European based so the match times will be based on late evening for Europeans (around 19-24 CEST) . Since this is the first cup we're still trying out what works out best for all teams. Currently our policy about pings is the following:

If there are 2 servers that offer advantage to both teams (e.g. 50 ping vs. 150 on BOTH servers), teams are allowed to play their marine rounds on server of their choosing. (think EU vs USA)

If it is not possible to find 2 servers that offer advantage to other team AND fair pings (below 180) to the opposing team, the match will be played on neutral grounds. (e.g. EU vs AUS on East Coast possibly?).

And of course if it's a match-up between teams from the same continent (e.g. pings are 50 vs. 50) the match should be played on any server that is available.

Bronze final, semi-final and grand final will be played 1 map on each server (more info on map section below).

The map pool is as follows: ns2_summit, ns2_turtle_b2c1, ns2_triad_beta2 and ns2_tram (with fixed spawns on tram). The elimination matches (before bronze match, semi-final and grand finals) are played on 1 map. If team wins the match-up 2-0, they advance to the next round. If team loses the match-up 0-2 they go to loser bracket where you have to win all the games to advance to grand finals. If there is a draw you play second map, which are predetermined to a specific round (example below), and you continue playing the match-up until the other team has won 2 consecutive rounds, after which teams either advances to next round, drops to loser bracket or gets eliminated from the tournament (loser bracket). Bronze match, semi-final and grand final are played on 2 maps.

If more maps are needed to determine the winner, the first backup map (2nd/3rd map basically according to if it's elimination round or finals) will be played on server decided by coin toss BUT the losing team will have pick what side (marines or aliens) they want to play on. 4th map will be played on the server that lost the coin toss and the starting sides will be reversed this time. If the winner is not determined yet, there will be final coin toss where the fifth and final map will be played and the team with ping disadvantage will have the pick of the side again. If there is yet another draw, the winning team will be decided between at least 3 admins/referees/shoutcasters according to teams performance during the games (because it is a weekend cup after all and we need to keep the games on going).

Here is example how the maps are going to be played:

    Round1

tram

turtle

triad

summit

    Round2

triad

summit

tram

turtle

    Round3

summit

turtle

tram

triad

    Round4

turtle

summit

triad

tram

The bolded map is the official map of the round which should determine the winner, if not you play the map that comes after that.

If there's anything else that is not clear, or you have any suggestions or concerns please post them.

Should strongly consider replacing turtle, triad, or tram with eclipse imo.
  • nadylinadyli Join Date: 2007-11-01 Member: 62791Members, Squad Five Blue
Currently the two maps I don't know if they're working out are tram and triad because they haven't been played that much in competitive format, so either one of those could be replaced with decent map but the map should ideally be already textured to be considered (for spectators it might be odd for people to run in map that is all gray). I'll have a look around eclipse and see if it has potential (in it's current shape) and I'll try to get few scrims going on both tram and eclipse to see which one would suit our needs better.

In my opinion, it would be best to limit this to just official maps as some teams may not have even played turtle or triad and it puts them at a disadvantage right from the start.

Well seeing as we know long beforehand, teams can remedy this before the matches begin.

Would like to sign myself up for recording the matches if possible.

What would really help is that Insight mod should be included into the Cup itself.

TBH id rather see tram/triad over turtle.. Not sure why you guys still like playing that map, its basically impossible to loose as marines unless your particularly bad or disorganized.

I don't consider 15 days notice a "long" time. This gives teams 2 weekends to actually practice a map. Summit and Tram should be the two maps for this tournament as everyone has roughly equal experience playing those maps.

Adding in custom maps that not everyone has played will add a bias towards the teams that actively play those maps.

Triad has some fps issues right now, I would say its not playable in a competitive scene.

Turtle now is extremely imbalance towards marines, I wouldn't play it competitive either.

Summit and tram are playable. Summit still most balanced map there is right now.

Eclipse is pretty good right now beside the fact its mostly not textured.

At least 2 patches coming before the event, you cant really know the balance at the time I rather play other maps even if the maps arent balanced.

lol @ "not knowing" a map

A lot of teams have never played turtle or triad. Just because it is a favorite map among the EU teams doesn't mean the rest of the competitive scene should have to play it.

If you are going to make it international, you need to make it open for everyone which means you should only play official maps.

I will be on holiday to the US when this takes place, but thank you for putting a tournament on this is really what the competitive community needs. Having something to aim for makes it worth while and gives motivation! Good luck to everyone who takes part!

After playing a few games on it today, I have to agree that turtle currently isn't playable in a competitive setting.

Heh yeh. Designing a good set of rules in a game that gets patched every other week is quite challenging. You're trying to hit a pancake lerk with Quake rocket launcher.

If you had an extra map or two, you could maybe use some veto system to allow the teams themselves to do some of the adjusting, but now I don't know.

Played against arc after the match against you and it was the same story, except this time with cheese (jetpack+gl rush).

I think turtle is a bit more viable in the new patch, due to the new harvester HP.
Guess we will play some matches on it, and see what happens.

I'm not sure if I agree with that, the alien starting hive is still close to impossible to defend against certain tactics.

Should just go with it tbh. A four team tournament is better than no tournament. If it plays out well, more teams will join the next time.
