You guys don't know about... coop??

To OP, yeah, I'd like me some good old coop too!

As I understand OP he means Combat (co_fdffc).
UWE said they won't develop a combat mode, but in the MOD-Forum is a combat mod thread.

And coop would require a single player mode as well, that is if the thread title is indeed an indication of what OP meant...

Either that or he is making a scathing remark on how much teamwork you're likely to see in-game and how the game mechanics don't encourage it enough.

But then he would not write about buildings.
OpolE what do you want to say?

Combat was the death of NS1.

Combat was an amazing practice mode that I really enjoyed. There. I said it. All the add-ons eventually ruined it, though :(.

    CO-OP team play V. bots

Someone will eventually make bots and certain server will probably be marine or alien only, but there isn't really a story nor does there need to be one. This isn't battlefield or COD.... strictly player V player because the human element is the most dangerous unpredictable exciting aspect to the game, i don't see this ever going co-op.

If Combat is ever brought back officially, I will actually stop playing the game. It did indeed kill NS1.
  • Raven_XIRaven_XI Join Date: 2003-01-08 Member: 12032Members, Constellation
Im pretty sure NS was fairly dated when Combat came out which was the main reason why people stopped playing it....

I found it enjoyable at times, had nothing on Vanilla though.

Combat mode will most likely only see it's return via a mod.
Which will be fine, because even newbies can tell the difference between the vanilla game and a mod in the server list.
What you're saying is not very wise, even though that's the exact reason why many stopped playing NS1.
It's like going on a hunger strike because there is a new burger in McDonalds, instead of eating your usual burger.

I'd like to see a co-operative marine-squad perspective mod, with plenty of darkness, camouflage and other mechanics unsuitable for online competitive play. Like co-op dead space in the NS universe.

I chuckled at OP, but the abbreviation CO is actually ambiguous.

I'm with the majority (or the vocal minority), CO killed NS1.

    PS (rant)
Bots NEVER help. Bot implementations should be a third party mod. Also, they should be clearly labeled as such in the server browser. Bots may be a fun programming exercise, and they may be a good time killer and a chance to get a few laughs, but once they're masquerading as players populating servers, then they're a huge problem and a massive detriment to the entire community.

    Yes.

I was in a game and people were talking about how they can't wait for Combat mode. I told them, politely, that it wasn't coming, not Officially that is. They seemed confused at first...and said I was wrong...and that there was.

Let them live in their own little world.

i feel like uwe already tossed some combat into ns2.. the way you buy your own weapons with your res (score), and healing on the armory.. gives it that watered down ns feel.. *shudders* combat should have been called cancer, it killed of classic ns pretty quick

thinking back the only reason i preferred combat was because first time playing vanilla is was confusing as all hell and didnt have the time to sit through a game and learn to play. Combat mode filled this gap perfectly. You could just join a server and start having fun almost instantly.

Combat shouldn't be hated on. It allowed an alternative for players who are tired of classic or wanted to practice higher lifeforms or so where there is little penalty to dying in combat.

Also it didn't really kill off NS Classic. When Combat was released, it was 50:50 however that didn't necessarily mean people all switched to combat (from classic that is).

It could have meant people who were tired of classic (and would have quit NS altogether) played combat and vice versa (for new players new to combat, tired of combat, then try classic).

I always played both modes (alternated between the two quite often) and I found it refreshing.

Also the mods for combat rocked (50 levels, /xmenu, etc).

It's sort of the same thing with regular Counter-Strike vs Counter-Strike Warcraft 3.

Finally there was plenty of team work needed in combat to win (though I admit there is a lot more incentive to go alone due to the exp splitting thing but end game, there was plenty of incentive to stick together and plan attacks, etc).

    ^ Basically this.

I'm not sure how serious people are when they say "Combat killed NS", since it's entirely irrational. Maybe it's an inside joke I was never privy to. I don't know.

    COMBAT KILLED NS!
    TELEVISION KILLED RADIO!
    THE INTERNET KILLED TELEVISION!

Not from UWE side but some comu members are already working on a combat mod.
Also I am sure we will see the return of NS2_supersiege003 etc.

Technically you could state Combat 'killed' Classic, but if it did Classic must've been on life-support and artificially sustained due to lack of alternatives. Sooooo, the free-market killed Classic, capitalistic pigs.

I thought saying that NS was 'killed' by what is essentially a mod of the game wouldn't be taken literally, which is easy to do for those unfamiliar with the concept.

Game mods will almost always overtake the original game. The problem with mods isn't the mods themselves, but rather that people have more choices, thereby diluting the player base for any single mod. Also, the more mods, the less players there are per mod assuming less and less people are playing the game with or without mods.

This is evidenced throughout gaming history.

Total Annihilation is a great example. The base game was great, but mods came along and detracted from the player base. Even today, an engine exists that has pulled the very few existing players to other game modes.

Another example is Mount and Blade: Warband. Along comes cRPG and Total Invasion, and all the regular servers became deserted.

The Specialists (HL1 mod) is yet another example. An RPG mod/map called Mecklenburg overtook the original game.

I could go on and on, but mods split player bases. Here's an analogy if this concept is still somehow confusing: If there were an island civilization that ate strictly corn, and one day a ship sailed up and offered the islanders potatoes and methods to farm them, would they not try them? Some may even grow their own and not eat corn as often. The village corn farmer may even grow less corn, since less people want it. Therefore, less people eat corn.

Again, I'm not saying that combat was necessarily bad, but my heart is with the original NS game mode.

    Combat did not kill Classic.

Combat was an attempt to make NS more accessible.
It WAS easier to just jump in and play.
I agree that some things of Combat have been brought to NS2.

It however did splinter what was left of the player pile.
What you learned in Combat was not applicable to Classic.
So over time people played one or the other ...or left.
