regrading your welder and building tool, i've seen almost same concept from game called killing floor. I wonder if you modeled the idea from this design.

example: http://www.kf-wiki.com/wiki/File:File-Weld...ing_welding.png
video of it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63GR3m6LPkQ about 15 seconds into the video you see it in action

edit

as for welding design, if you're adding this tool into the game pushing E must be removed to promote usage of the welder, and not allowing giving the welder to everyone by default. (as you said you do not want welders given to everyone by default) Though after reading charlie design log, it seems you can still weld pushing E, which goes against the idea of even having the welder. Even though it is stated pushing E would be slower, its not something everyone should have by default.

I've never played that game, so I can tell you that their welder was not an influence on my design. Generally I was looking at images of power tools, nail guns, and portable welders for reference.

I don't fully understand what you are getting at, but everyone will not have welders by default. You have the builder tool to start with, and pressing +use will build buildings. Then, after the commander has researched them, welder attachments will become available for purchase at the armory. Marine players who spend res to buy a welder will then be able to weld doors, and repair buildings and armor, by pressing +use. It will distinguish between pulling out the builder tool, or pulling out the welder tool, based on if its a building that needs construction or if it needs repair.

There is an issue with Proto labs and armories, however, where +use on one that needs repair may get get confused between welding and using, so we may end up having the welder be a weapon slot that you switch to.

the killing floor welder design looked like your drawings, and if you compare the two they looked somewhat same in design. I only wanted to know where the welder design idea came from, thanks for the reply.

as for welder itself in-game, based from charlie design log " Allow marines to repair power nodes without a welder (150/sec), but repair them faster with one (300/sec)." here charlie points out welder will not be needed, and based on that line it means marines will be able to repair things without any tool, thus having the ability by default. This goes against what you said in the video regarding welders. I really hope this is changed where marines must require a tool to weld/repair something and not just push E on it.

@luns: Well technically, the Power Node isn't physically destroyed or removed by damage in the current design, only the flaps fling open and the power core retracts into the socket frame; marines would just "build" it back up by extending the power core and closing those flaps.

Besides, the Power Node is such a fundamental element in Marine gameplay, that perhaps we can make such an exception to allow standard Marines to get an inactive Power Node back online.

its just not something you should have by default, it goes against the idea of having welder in the game. the welder must play an important role in gameplay as it did in ns1.

Oh I see what you're getting at. Yeah, there shouldn't be repairing (health/armor) of a damaged Power Node with the Builder, but the Builder should get an inactive node back online. It just so happens when you build things, HP and armor scales with the progress too.

Excellent videos from the NS2HD team. The talk of 20-player playtesting games gets me excited for when 32-player servers are possible....imagine the viability of having two comms managing multiple fronts of 7 players each! Good job on the welder concept development as well, a very much needed aspect to increase gameplay dynamics.

Would love the welder to be a weapon slot. It's quick and easy, would get rid of any +use problems instead of stacking everything on it. And maybe you could have it so the display could alert you to structures or armor that may need repair. And with it's 4hp/hit with 2.5 hits a second ala ns1, epic welder kills could happen again.

I was hoping the build tool would be built into the marine's gloves. Like this but in first person: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at70K79fIhQ

I imagine it would be easier to add a new animation and reskin the right or left hand rather than create a new model from scratch.

Troll? Hell no, I heard a while back someone commented on how unnervingly good looking UNW was for a bunch of geeks like us plebs, but surely Dushan rasies the bar even further? Also, Cory needed another big boy to keep him in line, surely, how does an artist get those massive arms?

My personal fav: Brian 1, not naturally photogenic but warms up to the camera the fastest, best jokes infront of 'the glass eye' by far, and really gets into it by the end of the day. Proll'y just the beard.

Best 'negotiation': B1 vs B2 about whos to 'blame' for the sound occuring at 0,0,0. Love B2's 'talk over the shoulder at you as I walk away' attitude. When I know I'm right, I do that all the time at work, suxs if you stride/strut off and catch your foot or hit a corner though! (or you have to come back 20 sec's later coz you forgot to get the print out from the printer, the actual reason you got up in the first place)

Over at NS2HD.com in the comment section for "NS2HD[343] Developer tools" Bret asked for a list of the various programs used and URLs to those.
Tried posting on in the comments section but seems there's some sort of anti URL filter that keeps deleting the post, so instead I'll just drop it here.
