Losing interest...

Sorry this has to be my first post but im losing a lot of interest in the game and was wondering what's going to be done about it?

Perhaps i joined the beta too early but in the last year very little progress seems to have been made, at least from a players point of view, im tired of playing one map and seeing the same old industrial theme, i thought a lot would of happened in a year, i don't want a refund but i don't want to wait years to get my moneys worth either, that said the good bits are good and the game has potential.

Correction man ... you are losing intrest in an early phase of a beta. Nothing wrong with that.

Oh and just so you know, I'm sure 99% of us are tired of the same things but the fact of the matter is that there is nothing UWE can do about it. Its up to you to figure out how to pass your time untill the game is done and people making these worry threads really don't help the developers case.

You're always welcome to take a break, have fun with something else for a while and pick the game back up when it hits release. Beta testing isn't for everyone; there's a reason playtesters usually have to be paid in the video game industry.

I have been waiting for someone to post one of these.
The other day I was thinking the same thing Electr0, so I went on youtube to look up NS2HD's first action gameplay video for NS2, number 2.

    <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Alnpt5UM7s4&feature=relmfu" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Alnpt5UM7s4...;feature=relmfu</a>

Then after that, I looked up the latest NS2HD video, number 310.

    <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=-dM5bQm42fc#t=821s" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=playe...5bQm42fc#t=821s</a>

I see a lot of improvement here. Especially with the small, but powerful team that is working on this.

Remember, we're watching the game being built. Most mainstream games release a "BETA" after they have already tested the "finished" game, to see if anyone else can find small glitches. Unknown worlds released the alpha/beta from the beginning of the game development as you can see from the first video.

After realizing this I came to the conclusion that this game has come a long way and with the huge build coming out sooner or later, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb7ZJXrsMMw&feature=player_embedded" target="_blank">Occlusion</a>, it will only get better.

Hope this helps you and any others that are doubting the game release, or are just getting tired of playing one map. Just like Techercizer said above, it isn't for everyone. Hence there are only about thirty of us in total that play the beta frequently.

The thing is i have been taking long breaks from the game, months at a time, i only play if a patch adds something fun, sometimes i might check out a patch that has added a lot of small stuff but i only stick around for a few hours at most as usually very little has changed.

From what i read in the past a lot goes on simultaneously in development but you don't see much new stuff along with all the other stuff that's of no interest to the average player, i come back every few months and see the same problem, at what point does the time between noteworthy updates get too much?

Never. Development is development; those of us who aren't designing game content, figuring out fixes/tweaks, or otherwise participating in the development process are just observing the process at whatever rate it happens. UWE will work as quickly and effectively as they feel they can, and the game will be done when it's done.

Hey Electro, sorry you feel that way.

A lot of work has gone into stuff that is "under the hood" so to speak, getting the inner mechanics working better so we can drop in the new features which are more obvious from the outside. So, there actually has been a very large amount of work that has been done, and improvements that have been made to the game over the last year, but it may not be as apparent if you are just measuring by features such as the Onos and new maps.

That said, however, we have some big plans for the next few patches, so if you can have some more patience, I can guarantee that NS2 will seem like a very different game by the end of this year.

    Exactly. +1

Think of it this way. You buy a used car that could be really cool but has a lot of problems. What do you start with first, the engine problems or the body work?
Of course the engine, and maybe a little bit of body work along the way.

Got to get the engine in good shape before working on the body, otherwise the engine will break before you finish paying it off. :)

What we are seeing now is a not so eye pleasing station wagon, with a really fast engine.

    <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=A203ShFM854" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=A203ShFM854</a>

Eventually it will have a fast engine and great features/looks.

Don't worry you'll regain interest for your paid product when it releases, just like everyone who pre-orders a game while it's still in development and realises game dev is actually a lot more arduous and time-consuming than they ever gave it credit for.

I suppose the car analogy is apt considering UW built the engine on which the engine is run :)

I take the same approach Electr0: play it for a while every couple of months. Usually it's better each time I try it.

This is a bit cynical, please don't take offense

What's going to be done? Nothing. You are not any more special than the rest of us pre-orderers.

That being said, in all seriousness, go take a break and don't check the site for a while. When you come back, one of two things will happen:

    1) You will be surprised at the progress made, and go check out what's new.

    2) You will be kind of disappointed and extend your break a while longer.

    Neither is a bad thing.

They're not my words but it's an in-joke. The public often accuses developers of being lazy if a game has a semi-serious bug that affects them, or if they cannot understand why a feature was not implemented.

In a way it's helpful that UWE have this open development process, but at the same time it's not completely open, so people still aren't getting the full picture of how bad a bug can really be or how much work goes into a seemingly simple feature.

Calling them lazy is just wrong.
However, they seem to have underestimated the scope of such a project, most notably when you charge money to let people test it. The result being rightful demands on the customers part and not so useful bug reports/balancing suggestions.
There needs to be some sort of feature lock, adding in random crap ideas from the community and call it a patch (yeah I'm exaggerating here, but that whip/grenade stuff makes me rage like a boss...) is just not what I want to see, I want a proper vision I can test, and give useful feedback.
As of now it's just impossible to do so, there isn't any balancing to begin with, Aliens get additions which f*ck up gameplay even further (yeah, Aliens need the Onos indeed at that stage of the game... but whatever, let whips bounce back grenades aswell), and stuff feels in general as if it gets changed anyway... =P

Actually, whip grenade thing is something I'm looking forward too. As an alien when Marines get early GLs, it's devastating, and it gives the whips more purpose as a defensive structure (for which they're pretty useless at the moment). Whips can defend a hydra farm from easy GL bombardment. It also means that ARCs are a more viable attacking strategy towards the current end-game. As whips are useless against them, currently the only time I see ARCs is when there is a stalemate and an ARC train is produced usually resulting in near-instant Hive kills. Never really see any individual ARCs assisting a uprooting of a Hive.

More on to the topic, <b>MINESHAFT!</b>

Oh well, I shouldn't have just mentioned the whip change alone.
There are some more things which just bother me, but it's pretty much personal preference.

In general I'm not asking for realism at all, it just has to make sense, I need a reason to explain said feature.
Some examples, the Shotgun for instance... it's just a terrible design decision to make pellets just vanish after a few metres. There could be spread and falloff damage, but no there is spread at a terribly short range, resulting in stupid RNG ###### at near melee range, what the hell am I playing here, on top of that those things just vanish after a short travel distance. Why would Marines be equipped with such a piece of junk? It needs to handle a situation like that, otherwise they wouldn't use it. Atm it's just a Casino Stick.

Speaking of Marines... I'm human, I can somehow identify with them, and seriously, the second a threat pops up which spawns invisible, teleporting subjects of inpenetratable armor (might change with the Onos though...) I just target that piece of junk planet with a nuke, instead of sending down waves of Marines which get spawncamped. Currently that Alien race just laughs it's ass off, they don't need those planets at all, they just infest it to mock marines, as they're so bloody useless.
That paragraph has quite some issues hidden in it...

Anyway to come to the whip, grenades were actually changed to prime after 1.5 seconds instead of the older 3 iirc. Quite a ristricting addition (which sucks), which could have been changed to just explode on impact with every surface, but oh well... every games needs bouncing stuff (no female marine joke... yet). So yes, what to do... give Aliens more faceroll by letting the AI do the work, they need it in their crusade to mock marines.
At least they come equipped with a slick looking assault rifle (I like it!), and not a nerf gun.

I seriously should have just created a suggestion topic, but atm it just wouldn't make sense, but yes, I'll post one sooner or later, most notably when it comes to the mysterious 3rd paragraph (Infantry Portals+Tungsten shells...).

PS.: Implement cloak shaders, thx, cy@, I love cloaked stuff, but it needs to be challenging to use... =P

Whenever someone can't explain why something is so good/fantastic in this universe they coin the term nanites.

If they really used nanites, the fall off seems dumb. It's a first person shooter game, I want to be able to shoot what is on my screen.

to say they are Lazy is just plain stupid, these guys work day in and day out to produce a game from scratch. As stated previously they have been doing all sorts of work under the hood, which means of course you arent going to think anything new has been added or done. Point being though we have new maps, soon to have new tech and hopefully the addition of everyones beloved ONOS. These things take time, if you're bored go do something else. If you come back and still arent happy well, so what? I have had my moments of being burnt out from playing but I take a little time and then come back to realize that even in its current state its much more fun than a lot of games out there.

Well, there is an entirely rigged up Onos but the game mechanics to support it haven't been coded into the game.
