Is NS2 working properly yet?

Ive been here since original ns and the start of it all
The last time i played NS2 there were flashing graphics glitches, scratchy movement, low fps due to bad optimization, collision detection, servers with memory leaks, and while you can run around and shoot. The second you get close to a skulk or marine it all goes to heck and then starts flashing around like a slide show.

There was only support for windows servers which were poorly optimized and unstable as well as numerous errors in code and obvious ways to crash the server which were bug reported through spamming certain features of the game.

I mean be honest with me the only known left NS community that has a server that is dead most the time which is <BAD> believes that hand grenades and explosives causes their server to crash. Do these servers have such problems?

I pre-ordered in 2009 when it opened and stopped playing beta like 6 months ago because of progress and lack of being able to really do anything then have a cool game where i could explore maps and have an OP flamethrower that could destroy the world.

So should i come back or give it more time. You guys be honest with me.

It runs okay-ish if you have a beast of a cpu. When I play on servers with less than 10 people it normally runs quite smooth, more than that and my fps starts dropping and things become choppy. There are also certain areas of the maps where I get really low fps regardless of the player numbers.

Playing on good quality servers is important as well. Best EU server is HBZ and best US is Inversion. Most of the other servers don't have the hardware capable of running NS2 atm and the tickrate drops in the mid game. If you play on servers with high ping you will also get lower FPS.

As well as these issues, there are also problems with the animations and hitreg sometimes seems funny. Skulks sometimes appear to be warping and going through the floor and all sorts of weird behaviour. It can definitely cause frustration.

With that said, when the game does run well it's a blast. If I were you I would wait until the next patch hits and then try and play on one of those servers I've suggested. Most people play the patch on day 1, join a really bad server, have a bad experience and then quit till the next patch.

Def come back when 186 comes out. The game is much more playable and will be more enjoyable to play when they fix all of the bugs with this next build.

You forgot to mention the Australia-Pure servers - the best server in Australia.

btw, I completely agree with you

give it more time. at least a year. delusional people here will tell you otherwise for some reason (i guess we ARE on an ns2 forum after all), but in reality the game is a broken, unplayable mess.

I have a small point add to TrueVeritas sagely advice - be on the lookout for trolls on the forum. Apparently some people can't stand it when others are having fun when they, for whatever reason, are not.

This, wait for the next version hopefully friday to play again. Right now it has a few performance issues, but it's still much better than what you described in the OP.

You probably have heard this before, but it's hearing it from me that gives it that validity factor.

The beauty of this development, Appollonius, is that you don't have to ask what is apparently a loaded question.

You can jump in and watch, for a very small fee, just as you evidently once did, as this creation takes shape. Even if all the opinions above are valid, and I don't make that judgement here, you do yourself a disservice by relying on them.

    Come play :)!

Wait for 186 before you play NS2. My advice. It should be out tomorrow I believe.

Wow really, people are finding it that bad?

I've got an old Q6600 @ stock, 4gb ram and a 8800gtx and I've played 204 hours of ns so far.

    Im finding it very playable!

The real answer to this question is:

    Maybe...

As it depends on a truckload of things ranging from CPU to operating system and of course server hardware and how long a server has been running, not to mention builds can vary widely in performance currently. Build 186 show promise from what the playtesters and devs leak out to the world :P

From a performance standpoint it got better, but far from ideal.
And as it isn't feature complete balance is all over the place.

if you've got a decent computer you can have fun right now. i wouldn't try with more than a 3-4 year old rig though. if you're looking for a feature complete game, it's not there yet, and probably won't be for [several] months or even a year+.

I get an average of 10-35FPS in-game on summit on a mid-full server. Combat is very sluggish; at times it looks like a slideshow.

    Vista Home 64bit
    MSI 6870 Hawk
    AMD Phenom II X4 940 3GHz (stock)
    G.SKILL 6GB DDR2 800

With this kind of hardware I'm puzzled as to why I have such poor performance. Using medium settings on a lower resolution.

    Odd, I have a AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8ghz
    G.Skill 4GB DDR2
    GTX 260
    Win 7 64bit

And usually get a FPS of 40+ until mid game, even in combat. Seems OS or video card(NVIDIA vs. ATI) related then, honestly at least in this case.

in which sense? if you feel like it will be done before next summer i think you're being incredibly optimistic. there are still a whole slew of issues to fix, and several huge gameplay elements to put in and balance/bugfix. In my bet is next halloween for 1.0, trying to be realistic.
