Potentially a shameful advertisement.
TL;DR: Developers of Dystopia, looking for funding for their next game, Blade Symphony.
Hey all,

So I'm urinal-cake. I've been circling around these parts since I was young. I'm not about to tell you I'm a great player, ("SHOULD I BEACON?",) or tell you I have some kind of competitive prowess. I've got a lot of history with certain groups like SA, FFT, whois (lol,) and initiatives like NSRadio, NSArmsLab and ReadyRoom.org

I've loved Natural-Selection for as long as I can remember playing it. I was kind of a Counter-Strike/StarCraft junkie before I came to the NS community. I played a lot of games, but those two (plus other mods, S&I to name one,) were the ones that led me right to NS when it was announced.

From there, I waited patiently for the release, and can remember vividly being yelled at by my mother at 4am (I was 13 at this point,) to go to bed. It was very hot, in the bonus room of our house, I was using a Windows Server 2003 box that my brother had set up to act as our house's DNS. I circumvented his permission because I knew that the ATI Rage IIC on it would at least run NS2 a bit better than my Matrox Millennium 2.

Anyways, fast forward to me playing NS for what felt like 4 years straight. Around 2004 and 2005, I start becoming more interested in the modding community and pay attention to a modification called Dystopia. I essentially leave the NS community in 2006, and full-time commit myself to the Dystopia community.

After four years, I've gone from fanboy, to known community favorite, to the founder of it's first competitive league, to forum mod, to playtester, to lead playtester, to lead producer and eventually the director of what we chose to make into our endeavor to become an independent game development studio.

Along the path, we picked up another group of talented individuals, Ninja Workshop working on a delightful little Half-Life 2 mod, called Berimbau. After picking up their team, two devapaloozas, and a lot of hard work from our team, we release Blade Symphony in a closed beta as a modification and are now seeking funding to release it as a commercial modification.

It's been my dream to go from being a game development layoff to being part of a small, close-knit group of talented friends with whom I can work on exciting projects with. Now we have the chance to make that into a reality. If anyone here gets a chance, please check out this link and at least give it a quick read.

We're trying to raise money to finish paying for a Source Engine license and continue development on Blade Symphony. So if you're feeling generous, please consider throwing a little money to people who really want to be in the same boat as the talented crew of Unknown Worlds. We work hard, we play harder, and we hope to have a good future ahead of us.

"Intimate duel" kind of makes it sound like a hentai game.

I mean, I guess we could make a hentai game, if people liked it enough.

The website and concept looks nice. I doubt, however that I'd play a hentai game. The sword fighting sounds nice tho.

    -----------
"In Blade Symphony, you take control of a warrior skilled at sword combat. By engaging in an intimate duel with others, you will learning the traits and fighting style of every opponent you encounter."

If my English skills aren't failing me right now, there is a "be" missing in there too.

    I don't understand it's market!
I'm sure we could put swords in there!

Would this be fun to any of us? No. So in actuality we'd rather get back to our new ideas.

What? You don't want the game to have swords?

... but isn't it a sword fighting game..?

I was talking about our hypothetical hentai game, which won't happen of course.
Although, with as many of the Japanese fighting games there are out there, they may as well be hentai fighting games.

I assume that as you're seeking funds for a Source license that means you're looking to sell it?

So you want money to make something that you can sell for money?

Am I being horribly cynical here or are you playing the "we're indie" card a bit too much?

[Edit to be a bit less nasty]

I like the idea of a multiplayer swordfighting game and would consider pre-ordering, but a charitable donation is out of the question. Oh, and the pre-ordering has to be done right- in my own view, UWE were bang out of order for opening pre-orders in spring 2009 saying the game would be out the fall of that year.

Then don't donate. Since UC has been a pretty long standing member of the community, here since the beginning, it's not unreasonable to think he'd want to publicize the game on these forums. Since they're trying to make something out of nothing it's not unreasonable to think they're asking for donations. I was surprised to see they raised nearly half their goal already.

I have a hard time getting into sword fighting games. So far my experiences have been you attack, they block, they attack, you block, repeat (like mount and blade) or some insanely complex, very hard to master, and seemingly random system (like the JKA3 mod Movie Battles II) where I basically hope I kill him.

Oh! How about Oni? Oni had a great combat system. Going to take any inspiration from that?

Hmm, Google and the internet in general isn't all to happy about kickstarter.com it seems. Wouldn't it be better and safer to just have a donation system on your game site?

<strike>I always wanted to be a dystopia supporter but unfortunately Paypal is the only way to pay.
So... are there waysi can support Dystopia (=help fund the other game) without paypal? How about paysafecard, click&buy or something?</strike>

sorry.... just noticed that thing called kickstarter... i'll look into it.

Something about some projects not getting their money or partially and they take a big share alongside Amazon, while not doing any of the marketing work, they just host a website more or less. You know, stuff like that just doesn't smell right...

Now I'm not sure if these claims hold any water, but they would need some looking into don't you know o.o

the guy who founded wikispot hub did a kickstarter for that as part of a Knight Grant requirement

his piece on his thoughts after the kickstarter were interesting

think of it as discovering a side quest that you have the potential tools to unlock!

or just be lazy and watch this

    and then click that \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/

the analysis is pretty nifty, especially the data on others

I didn't pay attention to the town actually. I spent most of that video thinking about how my old hometown could benefit from something like this.

yeah that is the desired effect

go to localwiki.org and start a turnkey wiki for your town

that is the purpose of the project
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Since the whole thing is still in the inception stage I have simply assumed that they haven't given thought to non-english wikis yet. You can always write articles in other languages of course, but the wiki software has to be translated as well.
