Holograms!

new HUD and GUI
I've once said about this, but I can't wait for seeing new HUDs and GUIs.

And in my opinion, for marines blue-digital hologram will be the best one.

Imagine if you got some tips, comments, and informations about structures etc with digital hologram! It would be awesome.

Game will not be looking good without super HUDs and GUIs even though they have lots of great features. All we see is our 1st person monitor, and it would be luxury when all the things come and show themselves with hologram!

And you know, at 3rd person model of marine, there is also blue hologram.

p.s. it would be also fantastic if the warning sign that is klinging between red and blue comes when marines look at alien stuffs.

    Sort of like augmented reality.

    Interesting...

Perhaps the aliens already have something similar, and this could be expanded with the "hive mind" (commander) being able to give orders through this method.

Wait wait wait, is it confirmed they will redo the HUDs? Or are you suggesting this, I was going to make one, but really can't be bothered with the Lua side of things.

There are some elements of the hud im not a fan of. First off the map is just ugly please fix that up or remove it. The random red blobs and green blobs you see as a alien is ugly and not needed. The waypoints are ugly and get in the way.
The squad list and the bottem left is ugly and needs more work.

I would like them to remove the uglyness from the hud can just clean it up and remove the wallhacks for the aliens.

I like the idea of holograms in the HUD, but you should be able to turn the 'tips' off.

It's a big wip at this point but what you ask is no problem. :P

    semi transparent: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/195/s...ranslucent.png/
    semi transparent blue: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/189/s...lucentblue.png/

Maybe the blue is better? Looks a little weird on the lit medpacks, but i'm sure with the right opacity it would look ok.

I don't like it, but the blue is the best out of all of them.

Still don't like it though. I would personally rather have the L4D glow shader highlight them.

So that means that you guys think that today's HUDs are enough, don't you? Just white typed texts with comic (x%) stuff. I just meant that should be changed.

    Fwolf:

First, use imgur :( imageshack sucks.

I actually like the yellow/red scheme, though it doesn't look as clean as the blue scheme. If you could make the yellow/red scheme look better, I think it would generally just be better.

Also, you said it's not a mockup, so does that mean you actually modded this in?

Ya i'm torn between giving what i'm sure many expect and what is more functional, i.e. the different colors allow the icons to be smaller and still easily distinguishable, but at the same time the image at the top of the forum (and the devs use of colors in everything including the minimap) kinda force the color scheme.

This is the current version. xVisions art + idea to show the icons elevated over the droppacks: http://i.imgur.com/1jyCQ.jpg

(at one point i was going to give the player-diamonds a color indicating overall health... but it seemed pointless since players go from healthy to dead so quickly... so that's why they're just blue lol)

That version seems a bit blurry or it could just be the image quality. Save as .png :P
It also seems less distinctive without the differing colours, and I notice it lacks the scaling down due to distance of the previous versions.
I also liked the previous versions where the icon was overlaid on top of the pack, rather than hovering above it. But I guess someone else didn't.
I think that so far I liked this version the best: http://imageshack.us/f/195/semitranslucent.png/ The only problem was that it looked weird and pixellated when it was scaled down due to distance.
I get that people want to go with the blue colour scheme, but I like the distinctiveness. Personally I think they (UWE) need to use more than just the one colour, blue, in their marine colour scheme. That doesn't necessarily mean the marine colour scheme needs to overlap with the alien colour scheme though, just that there is more variety within the scheme.
At first I was going to suggest a fully-healthy and a not-fully-healthy colour (binary, basically) for the marine diamond, but it might still be pointless for much the same reason you stated.

The images have this style and size, so that's where some of the blur is coming from: http://imgur.com/r3lqs Also yes the new image scaling was a little off at the time. Somehow i didn't notice. Works good now though lol.

It's a simple tweak to move those from/to center. I see bad company 2 also floats the icons on top so i think their may be some good in doing it. Perhaps the idea is you don't need to look as far down to see stuff at your feet?

QUOTE (Harimau @ Jun 17 2011, 06:52 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think that so far I liked this version the best: http://imageshack.us/f/195/semitranslucent.png/ The only problem was that it looked weird and pixellated when it was scaled down due to distance.

I think it's a mix between scaling for 640x480 and the websites seem to be degrading the images.

This is the new scaling based both on distance and resolution. The font sizes also change with resolution and distance, although i wonder if that's a good thing.

    1920x1200 http://i.imgur.com/peqmv.jpg
    640x480 http://i.imgur.com/Pa2Ug.png

With regards to color usage, i'm thinking of using colors again that are not normally associated with the marine team. The reason is their is too much value lost in making everything a bluish tint. So this is what i propose: Everything that has to do with the player specifically will be blue (like the crosshair and healthbars). And colors for everything else that exists in the world around the player. The idea being this may help people concentrate on what they're looking for on the screen a little faster. In a way we can say the devs are doing this now, i.e. the damage-indicators are red, not blue... also they're kind of like waypoints to something in the world that caused the damage, so it fits.

Yeah, the biggest problem with your latest version is just that the blue blur doesn't really stand out in the view, makes it a bit difficult to see. Maybe it's not so much an issue if you're moving though.

Also not entirely sure about having the font sizes scale, though it actually looks quite clean. Maybe just have a minimum and a maximum font size? Doesn't get larger than 'this', doesn't get smaller than 'that'.
