Fade Model

<div class="IPBDescription">Opinions wanted</div>(I'm going by the Fade reveal as I do not have access to the beta)

In my opinion the Fade looks too bulky, too reptilian and a little cartoonish. I would much prefer to see a more lanky, sinister looking creature with an air of mystery about it e.g. some black smoke obscuring facial features.

Possibly something more mantis-like.

Thoughts ?

    Seriously, i think it looks ok. Maybe the eyes could be more like on the original Fade (NS1 artwork, that made me download the mod for the first time)

    Buy the game and see it.
    The Fade look amazing but you need to see it ingame.

    I have the beta, and I think it looks better in game than the reveal. I also think the model is great, except for the face, the face looks cartoonish and too simplified and definatley not scary.

    The animations and the general shape of the fade look good, but the face looks silly.

    Indeed. It seems that as the fade "fades" it leaves a puff of smoke - not unlike the superhero Nightcrawler for example. Or perhaps it is more accurate to say it becomes smoke-like/incorporeal for a moment. This gave me the idea of leaving a part of its body permanently in a semi-"faded" state for example the face.

    The face seems too well defined - need some mystery there imo.

    Looks better in game...MUCH room for improvement.......lets get past the slideshow latency issues and then worry about the bells/whistles and the paint......

    I agree with most of the people here, for some reason the fade looked sort of awkward in the fade reveal. Perhaps its the video-compression or something cause he really looks far more sinister and evil in game.

    Agreed. I think the Fade animations are great and the model is also good, but the front of the face could use some tweaking. I'm thinking it's the bucked teeth that make it look too much like a cartoon character.

    I agree with the face perhaps needing some work, but the overall feel of the fade is simply awesome, especially the aforementioned black smoke. So. Sweet.

    Well... the video-compression made the specular and normal maps seem more or less non-existent, giving him sort of a smooth look that didn't seem right. I'm glad I made you lol though.

    I like the fade's smaller size. Its hitbox used to be huge. It also looked a LOT like a humanoid alien (something which should be avoided at all costs unless UWE is actually going for an infested human).

    It looks comical. Anecdotal i know, but some of the people i've shown the beta to thought it looked depressed and possibly a little DURRRRR.

    From the side his face looks good, but once you look at him at front he looks so sad. :(

    I agree that his face needs a little work, the upper head plating makes his eyes look sad at front.

    The Fade in NS stood way more out then this one. Now he's more like some dumb reptilian than a mysterious shadow killer.

    The fade model is the only disappointment I can put forward to Cory, everything else he has designed has been superb.. but the fade looks like it's a few swipes short of a kill. I'm bad at making analogies, to put it simply, I look at the fade and say "hurrrrr" to myself.

    I think it's just the face, the rest seems ok. Except his feet, they seem to clunky for a fast, stealthy type of play mode. Apart from that, the handling and feel is superb. I love the blink animations (apparate/disapparate combined with the purple smoke and particle effects. very cool)

    I admit that I'm not completely happy with how the face came out. While I think the side profile of the Fade overall works well, I agree that the front view does not.

    As far as his feet being too clunky, and the fade not being as sleek looking as he was in NS1, those were deliberate choices. Because the fade would use teleporting as his primary means of getting around, we wanted his design and regular movement to look somewhat awkward. From an evolution standpoint, because of blink, he's never really needed to develop the dexterity and coordination, nor the body shape, for fast running, and its the reason he needs to rely on his claws for support.

    When approaching the design of the aliens, we wanted to give them all a defined unique personality, rather then just falling back on trying to make them "scary' or "badass" in the traditional sense.

    If anyone beats down the general design of the Kharaa I'll punch them in the face. They're great, and the work spent on designing them really shows.

    Honestly who can complain on this lineup? The stances, profiles and common theme is great.
    (Okay the Fade-front looks weird admittedly, looks sad when doing the mega-stab instead of awesome)

    I love it, period. You're rarely going to get a full-frontal only view anyways, and I don't think it "doesn't" work, and the movement totally helps make it frightening.

    Also, wow, I'm playing with it in model viewer, and the idle7, just all the model manipulation that's happening? The fact that this exists in this engine makes me excited in the pants.

    Overall I like the fade.
    Alot.
    I found him frightening to fight...
    I found it easy to blink.

    Perhaps if his eyes were slanted a bit like the skulks
    he would have more of a vampiric look to satisfy the sad eyes crowd.

    It still is low priority.
    The game has become more playable but the client side animations need to be smoother.

    I think it's the frowny brow plate that does it, I think. If you cover it with your hand or scroll down a bit so you can't see it... it doesn't look that bad.

    Gives it a bit of a neanderthal look, you know?
