Nice thread I think music has quite an effect on inspiration and ideas while mapping.

For me I listen to Infected Mushroom (especially Classical Mushroom and I'm The Supervisor albums), Deadmau5, Hallucinogen, etc.

The house and psy-trance genres seem to make me feel the most creative while mapping.

Lots of different music, classical which has already been covered nicely, blue danube is probably my favourite bit of music ever.

But then there's plenty of other music I find enjoyable, such as nightwish, which is kind of what you get if you hire an orchestral composer and give him nothing but electric guitars.

    <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1TGJPPRjcM" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1TGJPPRjcM</a>

That basically sums up nightwish in one song I think.

Depends on what kind of mood I am in.

Mostly metal like Metallica, Death, or Atheist.

I don't know how you guys can work with heavy metal. I prefer something slower and softer. I either listen to rock or light electronica kind of music as long as its not heavily repetitive like trance.

    stuff like BlueTech

Whatever peeks my interest, but generally i find if i want to have fresh ideas then i can't be listening to my usual soundtracks on winamp.

Radio is a great place to go to since it's generally different and completely random, keeping your mind on the ball and the cogs moving.

The music I listen to depends on my mood and the hour of the day mostly but it can be anything. Thom Yorke's album "the eraser". Anything by Radiohead is nice. Also the not so old albums by Sonic Youth(esp Sonic Nurse). Mogwai and Oceansize works quite well too and there's probably a handful more. Also Serena Maneesh's "SM 2: Abyss in B-minor". Check this ###### out on spotify if you want to.

Slap on some Ronald Jenkees. He's a bit "kooky" but his music is excellent:

    Check out his channel : <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ronaldjenkees" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/user/ronaldjenkees</a>

(I think he even got one of his tunes into a Guitar Hero or Rock Band game.)

    Enjoy.

Without question, or need to view all but the first link and read none of the rest of the post, this music is astonishingly humbling (as is an overwhelming majority of classical music). If but only level designers/mappers (and all accompanying skill sets, ie the infamous texture artist), would strive for such passion Natural Selection 2 would be nothing but epic and hugely succesfull. A sincere thank you is due to you for allowing others to listen to this music; I hope only that they draw as deeply from its' inspirational potential as I did.
