What is your full system requirements?

Others are correct your single core computer could do with an upgrade; and you should seek Steam support for additional help with your Steam error.

    It's time for change!

Collect some spare change until you can buyz new cpu core, maybe with a hammer you could intergrate a new core into your existing cpu. And driven by the power of the holy hammer your cpu shall RUN DA STEAM...

Indeed. Your PC is well suited for games in the 90s and early 2000s, but not for 2010.

    Time for a new PC/Upgrade.

maybe it is time to get a new CPU, but its just the fact that Steam/VALVe doesnt care worries me
it even said on their steam hardware survey that a little under 20% of steam users have single core CPU's
and the only people experiening the random disconnects appear to be single core CPU's
the fact that they dont even acknowledge this troubles me...
and the fixes didnt work, thanks anyway

It's like dx 8 people complaining about not having their rig supported.

    You eventually have to upgrade.

The selfishness of some people staggers me sometimes.

Millions of gamers use Steam and it works perfectly fine for the vast majority. This guy wants to deny us all the convenience and practicality of using Steam just because he's one of the minority who has problems with it.

Steam is fantastic for both the gamers and the developers. UWE have already said the automatic updates makes it a godsend for them. It must stay that way.

After looking it up, I found that I actually had a single core computer in my house!

So... I installed steam on my microwave. Didn't run. Guess you won't be playing steam games on your microwave. I'm now assuming that's what you are playing on... but supposedly some wrist watches and washing machines also use single cores still. God knows you can't buy them for computers.

Steam sux anyways more faults than merits, not worth to make one without now that it has been done. I too had single core until recently it is really pain in the ass.

    And your point is....?

I'm actually a little surprised Steam has issues with Single-core operations for some reason. I mean, it's a stupid client program.

Now as far as getting NS2 to run, here are the stated min reqs on the website (outdated and definitely not minimum for the alpha:)

It really isn't. Besides Max saying that it does use two threads, dumping animations and odd ends into another, I've tried playing it with one core.. and it dropped my FPS from 45 to 30.

I know a lot of people are still running single core machines, but the sad truth is, they are coming to an end. Even if 20% of STEAM users are on single core systems... There are a lot of games that only require that, not all games on STEAM are cutting edge and demanding. You know? Peggle, Half-life and all its mods, Psychonauts, UT2004, etc etc. I'd imagine a developer would rather cater to current hardware and the 80% of users who are running dual and quadcores, than have to make engine sacrifices for ole Joe who refuses to upgrade his Athlon 3200+.

That and the performance of entry level hardware these days is pretty amazing. You don't need to drop thousands of dollars into a machine to be able to play most games.

Also if people admit to not being able to afford new hardware, how can they afford to pay out $40 for NS2SE? If I knew my PC was a POS, I would definitely not of gotten the SE.

He's referring to prioritizing money. You could also probably get away with a capable PC on half that budget.

Heh. Half of that budget? Try a third or less. After all, you can pull quite a few parts forward (monitor, HDD, optical drives, case) and most of the things that won't are integrated into a majority of new motherboards. Leaving you to shell out for CPU, mobo, RAM, and maybe a new video card if you don't have one.

Really, I was looking at upgrading an old server running on an AthlonXP 2500+, and can make it VERY capable for under $200 (<a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.435740" target="_blank">Athlon II X4, 2GB RAM, onboard vid/net/sound</a>). Leaving quite a bit to grab a decent video card if the onboard nVidia IGP isn't enough, and a new PSU if the old one is less stable.

Five hundred bucks is <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.435680" target="_blank">overkill</a> if you know what the hell you're doing.

I was talking about from scratch. Sadly my last computer only had IDE connectors and a socket AM2 which didn't leave much room in the way of simply upgrading.

I doubt your monitor would be a problem. Okay, so take that list, add on a $30 case (or even splash out for a $60 case with a nice PSU), $20 for a generic optical drive, and a hundred bucks for a 1.5-2TB 5400rpm disk. Still looking at under $300 with the cheaper of those two links. Hell, they have a bundle with a workable case for $30 more on the low-end bundle. If you want a new monitor, $120 will get you a very nice 21" LCD, or wait around on Woot for an even nicer one at the same price.

Not utilizing more than one core does not mean that core is left useless.

Also, if you're in the camp that says Steam sucks(to others in the thread), well, hope you have fun driving down to that store, paying more money, and not ever playing another indie game in your life.
