    I don't think so. I will download it as soon as it's released. That shouldn't take very long, and the server itself will probably only a few config files to alter. I wouldn't imagine it to take more then 10 mins once downloaded.

    I wish it had a linux version for servers because I would like to make the cpu of my server warming. too bad :( Maybe with wine ? Mh... bad idea.

    The G4B2S servers are prolly going to be swamped. Everyone who played NS, knows their name. I would imagine their servers would be the most popular.

    I've a bad ping on theirs (~100-200 ms). I hope it won't be the case. I'm located in Europe. Where are they ?

    Sounds fantastic fellas, well done for all the support. Cannot wait for this!

    I'll see how fast I can get one up. I'll have to copy server files (which I indeed do hope will work without steam) to another computer after I've downloaded, and then I'll need to configure it and start it. Guess the biggest hurdle could end up being the STEAM requirement possibly.

    whendarknessfalls will have 1 or 2 up.. Take back over the #1 spot we had before ;)

    How are the files going to be disturbed? Via steam?

    I figured that would be the case while everyone rushes to make the released code run as smoothly as possible :)

    Can we get some hint, though, as to how the server will be made available? Direct http download? Via some complicated method in Steam itself? Will the server program only be accessible from a valid alpha steam account?

    I guess the dedicated server will simply be part of the whole NS 2 Alpha Steam package.

    Has anyone found it since they can now download Ns2?
  • wdfstryfewdfstryfe Join Date: 2009-05-28 Member: 67532Members
    I'm downloading now.. I hate to have to turn around and upload 1 gig back to my server. That would SUCK.

    If anybody finds the dedicated server buried inside the main alpha files they should let us know!

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->Server.exe -map ns2_tram -limit 32 -lan false<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    Haven't found the server.exe yet, but there's a Dedicated_Server_Usage.txt file in the main directory.
  • Ken-Bean-NetKen-Bean-Net Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18973Members
    I also see that.

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->The server stores its settings in the file: %APPDATA%/Natural Selection 2/server.xml

    If the file does not exist, it will create a default copy the first time it is run.

    The server options can be changed in the file manually, or they can be
    specified individually on the command line (those changes will be saved by default.)

    Optional command line settings are:

      -file [path] (allows you to specify a different configuration file for server settings)
      -name [name] (specifies the server name to be shown in the server browser)
      -map [name] (specifies the map to load)
      -ip [address]
      -port [number] (default is 27015)
      -limit [number]
      -lan [1 or 0, or true/false] (specifies how/if this map shows up in the master server list - default is false)
      -password [optional]
      -save [1 or 0, or true/false] - (specifies whether to save out command line overrides - default is true)

    Examples:

      Server.exe -map ns2_tram -limit 32 -lan false
      Server.exe -file "c:\my servers\config.xml" -map ns2_rockdown -lan true -save false<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    Any truth to the rumor that server.exe wasnt included in the steam download?
  • w0dk4w0dk4 Join Date: 2008-04-22 Member: 64129Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
    It isnt in the Steam release.
    I guess they simply forgot it. Hope it'll come as a seperate download.
  • NurEinMenschNurEinMensch Join Date: 2003-02-26 Member: 14056Members, Constellation
    At least it's nowhere in the Natural Selection 2 folder or any of its sub-folders.
  • AezonixAezonix Join Date: 2009-12-20 Member: 69727Members, Constellation
    I sort of feel like, well, that's sort of, um, a requirement for playing. Hm.
  • dnleechdnleech Join Date: 2005-02-02 Member: 39504Members
    It's not in the tools section of Steam and I don't see any folders named "server" in the ns2 local data folder ...

    Maybe instructions for obtaining server.exe are coming with the email at 0:00?? Not the way i would have done it but oh well, we shall see!

    I can confirm this. No Server.exe was released with the current steam alpha files.

    It doesn't seem like there's a CMD type server with GUI (much like HLDS) however my assumption as of yet is that you will run a server by making a shortcut to your NS2.Exe:
    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->"GAMEPATH\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection 2\NS2.exe" -map ns2_tram -limit 32 -lan false<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    My best bet. Obviously cant test because to run the NS2.exe you need to active it.

    Edit: only issue with the above is that the game will have to be running which seems like a major resource feast. Further it does look like it'll behave much like a listen server then.
