Not so sure we'll get Dedicated for Alpha. But I wouldn't know for sure.

Metro: It would be kind of hard to play the Alpha without dedicated servers. I doubt the dev team have the resources (ie. $$$) to host enough servers themselves, nor would they want the headache of administrating the servers while trying to develop the game.

The only other way would be to have everyone using Hamachi as we did with the engine test, but that is a "jury rigged" solution. I'm confident the devs plan on releasing a dedicated server and just forgot to mention it.

Playing alpha on Hamachi, ouch.. Lets hope they release dedicated server info. Devs?!?

I would imagine that listen servers will be available. Dedicated servers perhaps not. Remember this is an ALPHA

I can't say for sure, but I would expect this to be the case with the first alpha release.

Please take into account and consider how many servers you may need with however many Alpha testers total you have listed :)

1 server just won't cut it heh

Super Nova Team will gladly host several dedicated servers when they become available but most likely have a listen server up for the testing.

Whoever said you can't join another server that's hosted? Find some other alpha server you and your community appreciate.

Awesome news for us with win32 boxes!!! Sorry linux guys, It's a good system but somehow always gets put on the back burner thus is why i went to a win32 box.

    Now the question is......
    Mods......???
    plugins....???

Naked vanilla servers are good but i prefer my servers to have a bit of muscle in the code.

Confirmed mod support, so the LUA coding junkies will be whipping up admin mods and all the fun stuff very shortly I assume.

Yup seriously disappointing - I've got a newer dual xeon supermicro with 16 cores and goobles of ram running CentOS in a datacenter with a solid community that wants this and I have nearly unlimited bandwidth.

Do people even run 32 bit windows servers anymore except for old legacy equipment?

I guess I'm just a bit surprised since most servers from what I saw in NS1 ran on linux. The client is understandable, the server getting released on an antiquated OS is a surprise.

I'm very excited for it (I pre ordered SE long ago), and very happy that it's making great progress, I am just very surprised with this.

Since they're focusing on the game itself, it is not strange that they have not had time to focus on the Linux server as much.

You'd be surprised. Specifically to NS, Linux ded.server was always a little 'clunky' behind the Win32 one, including a lot of weird performance issues in the past the MS one didn't have. The NS team simply didn't have the resource to go chasing it, I suspect. And nowadays, I see an awful lot of games with no Linux dedicated support at all.

The issue is that gamers are (small, but vocal minority aside) mostly on Windows platforms. Once your game is built, it's logical and simple to extrude that to a dedicated server (as you had to write a lot of it for your Listen server anyway). Linux means a whole other development cycle, and budgets just don't allow for it.

I'd expect the Linux version to turn up, but I wouldn't be surprised if you always have a little delay and some issues to live with. I could be proved wrong of course...

Windows Server 2008 is not antiquated.
