Upcoming Steam Update

Question???
If the next update is being released via steam is it still going to be released via your own updater as well.

If not then how are we going to get the update if we have not registered the game with steam?

Why would you not rgister the Key with Steam?
I was under the impression from something I picked up on a while back where I am sure someone said that if you registered your key with steam then UWE would have to pay a fee to them for DLC costs?
I wanted to avoid that so every peeny stays in development...

How else will steam know if the game is installed if you havent activated it with them?

as far as i know, steamworks, which is what theyre using, just gives them a way for players to find servers and talk to each other. they still provide their own update server cause its not a valve game, i guess. im sure someone else can clarify it more, and i think steam will be required since they decided to use steamworks

I doubt we'll ever know. Steam makes companies using their distribution technology sign an NDA to not reveal how much of a cut they take.

out of speculation... prolly between 25-40%

I would think, since the current release of the game hasn't been marketed, promoted, or distributed in any way, valve wouldn't be taking very much of a cut of what has been sold already. As soon as you are actually selling through steam I think valve gets a reasonably large cut, depending on the strength of the title (they probably get practically nothing for modern warfare games sold through steam, because the game would sell awesome either way, so valve gets a user bonus just for having it available. but indie games get HUGE sales boosts from being supported by valve, so valve probably takes a much larger cut there)

I believe there were numerous reports that said Steam compares very favorably to retail or M$ distributions, so at least there's that. As has been mentioned before, there's an NDA on the issue, so I wouldn't exactly expect a response... But we'll see.

I'm pretty sure we'll have to activate the game for the next update, since they plan to do it through Steam.

Did you seriously just use a god damn dollar sign instead of an S when talking about Microsoft?

    I don't see a dollar in Micro$oft.

Flamebait aside, it appears it's not too costly. But buying from UWE themselves is the best option.

The next update will be Steam only (unless something unexpected happens and delays that too much). The way it will work is that you'll put your existing pre-order key into a web page and it will give you a Steam key that you can use to activate the game through Steam.

That'd certainly be convenient. Good job.

So I take it we're going to have to wait until Friday for this update or will it be a sneak attack sometime during the week?

Maybe they got sucked into the office refrigerator, and now they are in Narnia Selection?

Or maybe the whole box of animal crackers did a devour rush?

I heard there are half goat, half man creatures that run around on the ceilings on all fours, pouncing on anything that moves...

I heard they just bumped into Eric Idle in the refrigerator, who was just preparing for a performance of his "Galaxy song" and so they stopped to have some tea and cookies together ...

    NOOB Question

What is being released on steam?
Is it an update to the test engine or the alpha version already?

    Thanks

I can almost say with 100% accuracy that it will be the engine test with a patch.
Don't think they will release alpha yet.

Is it safe to assume that we'll also get the tools via steam also, because they do all run on the engine.
