So... Let's start with something safe and prudent. Edvard Grieg. I don't think you have any chance not to have heard any of his tunes by now, so requires no introduction.

    This should be interesting..

    My first contribution: <b>Zagar</b>
A little hard for me to describe, but it's a band from Hungary playing mostly electro with some jazz and/or rock influences, sometimes even house. I discovered them last year during a trip to Budapest and I've been hooked even since.

    One of my favorites:
    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UUPNQpT0TOY"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UUPNQpT0TOY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

If you weren't completely repulsed by that, check these ones out to have a better idea of the range of music they play:
    "Wings of Love" -- <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFOB3HbcOfI" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFOB3HbcOfI</a>
    "Bossa Astoria" -- <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNywH1RU5Ac" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNywH1RU5Ac</a>
    "Trains" -- <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRAHjUdyrjU" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRAHjUdyrjU</a>

Alright, this <i>is</i> proving quite useful.

Here's something from me then... <b>Bret Autrey.</b> Unfortunately I'm completely useless at describing or knowing or caring about musical styles, so the best I can offer is an auditory clue. Action-packed?..

This is <i>Flugufrelsarinn</i> by <i>Kronos Quartet</i>, although it was originally done by Sigur Ros (the Kronos version has no singer either).

I find the songs great for escapist thinking and just really interesting to listen to due to its quite (to me anyway) unique sound.

    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1hn6-O-mTAo"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1hn6-O-mTAo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

This second one is <i>The Heart Asks for Pleasure First</i> by <i>Michael Nyman</i>.

A bit more conventional, but a great modern piano song with a good bit of drive behind it. Strangely its from a movie sound track for The Piano, but all the songs seem to be just some form of iteration of this song? Meh, good song though...

I think I've posted this guy in the youtube thread at some point, but it's one of my favorite songs and videos:

    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yPFpW-WyZY4"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yPFpW-WyZY4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

can't decide whether this belongs in the youtube thread or this one, because it's sort of a music video and sort of a joke. Still, yo la tengo rocks, and they're insane good live.

    Game soundtracks? Long post incoming!

Grim Fandango: Beatiful storytelling, wonderful music themes. Brings back so many memories.

    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jT4A-MSQgoI"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jT4A-MSQgoI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

Total Annihilation: Jeremy Soule really made it sound like a glorious never-ending war.

    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Ek3JvUBYaI"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Ek3JvUBYaI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

Diablo: The Tristam theme is a great illustration of the mood in the town. One of my all time game themes.

    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q2evIg-aYw8"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q2evIg-aYw8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

Deus Ex: The opening gets stuck in your mind forever. The variations played throughout the game don't help forgetting it one bit.

    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/t1oxIrAX39M"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/t1oxIrAX39M" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

Sacrifice: Another excellent support for the overall game mood. Climbing to a hilltop and seeing the valley open in front of you while the early crescendo (I guess you can call it that) kicks in is pretty magical.

    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/C96jaxpZvAA"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/C96jaxpZvAA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

Dungeon Keeper: Aggressive, industrious, creepy, still weirdly humorous. You can practically feel how the wooden door is getting manufactured in your workshop.

    <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Yhl6ZE0l0z0"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Yhl6ZE0l0z0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>

Well, since we're on the subject of game soundtracks... <b>Doom Remix Project.</b> Do you remember the music from Doom? I sure as hell don't... But some of these mixes have been stuck in my head forever.

    Amusingly neither YouTube nor Grooveshark have heard of it... So here's a link to a <a href="http://doom.herograw.net/The%20Dark%20Side%20of%20Phobos/Disk%20One%20-%20Phobos/DSoP_02_TheRedMoon%28E1M4%29.mp3" target="_blank">sample</a> and <a href="http://doom.ocremix.org/main.html" target="_blank">full collection</a>.

Oh and, doing great so far, this is fun. :)

I remember the music from Doom! Well some of it.

They're not particularly good memories... the slower less frantic and not-so-much-'a-synthesizer-just-exploded!' sounding ones weren't bad.

To break the theme of game music... here's movie music!

Southampton, one of the major pieces from Titanic. Revel in the majesty, the glory, and the known doom of this magnificent ship.

I recently bought 'Hospice' by The Antlers. It's a concept album about a difficult, emotionally abusive relationship between the narrator and a terminally ill girl lying in a cancer ward. A lot of raw emotion, most of the lyrics are terrific and touching.

It took a few listens to get into it properly, but now it has slowly grown into one of my favourite albums. The falsetto vocals and the sound take a bit time to get used to.

The two released singles from the album. Especially "Two" is pretty amazing with CD quality and decent headphones.
