But the whole point of your original post was that they hired a Linux programmer. So Scythe pointed out that that guy works on the dedicated servers.

allthough am a windows only user am glad to see that valve is expanding their services and games to others OSs, this could allso help to sell more NS2 copies.

If these rumours are true and Valve actually makes a Mac version of Steam (within the near future), it will mean that Unknown Worlds might be able to avoid writing their own stuff to substitute the role of Steamworks on their Mac version of Natural Selection 2.

    Oh yeah, baby.

It's a nice gesture. Now Mac owners can pretend they own a gaming rig. :p

Actually I think the most interesting part of all this is that it means they'll probably have to uproot Source from DirectX in favour of something like OpenGL... Assuming for one second the transition will not be half-assed (no pun intended), this opens up a world of possibilities for their games. Geeky like.

    It is cool and all...

but imagine what this will really do...

Every single apple commercial has the basic message of "Hi I'm a mac and I'm really special" or "This is why PC sucks, this is why Macs are good"

Their entire community is based on "I'm better than you are because I'm getting ripped off buying an underpowered computer"

People with low self esteem then go out and buy these computers, and start flame wars on the web. Do we really want these people playing on steam?
Imagine what that will do, they will go out and see their favorite "Hi I'm a mac" commercials and then join your server and start ###### about how they have better computers. When everybody is just trying to play the game.

And don't tell me not all mac users are idiots, and that some use them for actual work... or something like that.

If they are actually using a mac for work.. They wouldn't be playing games on the computers in the first place. They will be too busy working.

Oh wow, even steam is promoting the flame wars?

This is really surprising, I guess this would be the only way to lure the mac users to come buy the games off steam. Hey it worked the first time to get them to buy the computer in the first place.

Don't worry, you know the whole PC community will jump at the chance to make fun of them.

A: "Hey how come this game is so choppy?"
B: "Get a new GPU or more RAM."
A: "What do you mean? I have a Mac?"
    Whole server: "LOL"

I can foresee such scenarios and ultra epic uncensored flame wars taking place. This will be priceless. And this time it'll be decided on the battlefield :p

P.S. I love Draco's vid, the music is awesome.

Looks like it's safe to get your hopes up high. Despite not even owning a Mac, this news still excites me. The fact that they're adding OpenGL to Source makes the 'open-source hippie' in me very happy.

Also note the paragraph about "Steam Play", which allows players to buy the game once and play it on both platforms and share common Steam Cloud data. Delicious.

Ya know, the PC gamers fanboys are all over this about shiny packages and underpowered HW, but my macbook has been perfect for all uses, including game play, and OSX is by far the best OS I've ever used.

For me, to finally get rid of the last hold Windows has on my PCs will be great indeed.

i'm lolling at the amount of flaming you're doing while accusing others of being flamers. Seriously? What? we should restrict the ability of mac users to get on the internet because they are all "too stupid" to act civilly? Inherently, anyone who buys a mac must be an idiot, because they bought a mac? Can you really believe that? Sounds a lot like "those people deserve to be slaves because they're black" talk to me...

Okay, I'm going to shut this one down right away. I don't want to see any attempts to compare liking specific operating systems to slavery or racism. First, it's a comparison that is not apt and is, honestly, fairly insulting and secondly, I don't want a discussion that is clearly already developing acrimony do veer off into even more tension.

Valve are porting Steam to Macs. Good for Mac users. Try not to use this as an excuse to have a go at someone.

Typically, a thread in the general discussion forums means that this news, in some way, relates to Natural Selection 2.

So let's jump off from that standpoint.

Steam becoming available for the Mac definitely means a larger potential base of customers.

That is, if UW decides to actually do anything about it. It's another motivation in place, but if the decision comes to that it will most likely be much further down the road, post game release.

Lies. The Off-Topic Forums never exist.....

Anyways. NS2 devs said their engine is pretty easy to swap out since it's a modular little bugger. Since Steamworks will port, you get plenty of shiny features that get to stick around, but the Mac port of NS2 will still take some time to get out since it's their own engine now.

In general, though, yay Macs getting Steam Games w/o bootcamp.

guys, i didn't make this thread so people could troll about whether pcs are better than macs or macs are better than pcs. i made it to inform the community about the announcement that valve made about steam coming to macs. who cares, pcs and macs have there uses and they accel and decline in different categories so stop comparing them to each other because theres nothing to compare. if you don't like macs because they are overpriced, then don't buy them and if you don't like pcs because there ugly then don't buy them. i dont see how this is bad news because it would get Unknown Worlds Entertainment more money and it would expand the amount of people on Natural Selection and Natural Selection Two.

Apple tries to hold the high-end of the market (not even worthy being called a computer), by selling sub-par products with an interface with nothing but eye candy, then boost advertising and marketing to promote it is on a higher level than a PC, yet MACs do have many problems themselves. (Snow Leopard? HP Printer support on the release date? NONE.)
The reason MACs don't usually have viruses brings you back to the first reason why viruses or malicious code is created in the first place. People usually want important information or want to simply mess with people. People on MACs tend to not carry important, sensitive information, and these people are generally unnoticed because of their lack of sense to realize these "computers" are nothing but a fascade to relieve users of unfriendly experiences with such a bold, powerful, and flexible computer running an operating system such as windows, giving them an alternative to do simplistic tasks because their mind cannot fathom anything more complex than a click of a button.
All I can say is, if you plan on buying ANY apple product, better buy that extended warranty. Their hardware is junk, and their OS is primitive. Why do you think they let you emulate windows? Windows is by far more useful in pretty much all ways to the worlds majority of users.
Server ops, simple minded people excluded.
