Screw that thing. I want as close to the NS1 gorge model as can be. That thing is adorable in its own frightening way.

Actually I always got the impression that the fade was the only animal that the kharaa absorbed into its army. This is mainly due to the fact that the fade looks physically different from all of the other aliens (due to its lack color while all the other aliens are brown and that its bipedal).

Just to update, here are the quotes I have received so far from several sites:
(As noted below, at least one of the three is willing to produce 250 pc. which is probably closer to our target numbers.)

Binkley Custom Toys writes:

is based on the information you have entered. I took the size you
chose, and compared it to thousands of past project. This leads me
to a very accurate price.

Here are the stages you will be going through with me here at
Binkley.

1 - Quoting - instant quote (this email)
2 - Prototyping -approx. 4 weeks
3 - Pre-Production - approx. 1-3 weeks
4 - Production - approx. 12 weeks

I can get product to you more quickly using air shipping, but 12
weeks in the production stage, is a good approximate timeline.

Pricing is based on;
- Medium to High Quality Toy
- A 12" Stuffed or Beanie custom toy
- A Bulky volume toy
- Your name printed on a custom sew in label (bum tag)
- Will meet or exceed all International health and safety standards

LOL :)

Sounds somehow nauty ...

I only can second though to get permission first from UWE and maybe do not do this on your own if UWE wants to do some merchandise theirselves, because I think there are a lot of people that would buy a George ( :P) for 20$ or even 20€.

Maybe they could make a preorder your gorge site or something and if there are enough preorders it can be realized, if not you'll be refunded (the worst thing that could happen is that you supported them with a little credit for some time :P )

I would be fine with waiting a little longer if UWE does this on their own.

+1 to the Commander Mug (genious idea, what else would a commander do all day but drinking coffee)

What UWE could do is double or even triple the estimated cost of producing 500 (people would still pay $20-25 for them + shipping). They could shoot for the 250 mark to break even (this would be easy enough to hit given the level of interest), have a small supply to sell for a while, and use the rest in giveaways or promotional bundles.

Of course this would take time away from other tasks to handle the mailing etc., but if they find the time it would be a worthwhile effort.

I lol'd at the 'Boy George' line too.

Renegade, you really wanna do this IP infringement? Unless you make a deal with UWE, you will not be able to do this legally, no matter how much interest, or how many quotes you get

The reason the chinese (and other oriental producers) get away with producing those cheap knockoffs is not because they make it look slightly different, but because those manufacturers simply ignore international patents, trademarks and intellectual property laws. It doesn't mean just calling the gorge "boy george" or making it look slightly different allows you to do it.

Even if you get it done legally, personally I think it's pretty lame trying to profit off UWE's IP, and unless UWE approves I hope none of the community will buy them.

You're disillusioned if you think I'm doing this solo or for profit. I'm taking time out of my day to inquire around so that we can generate ideas as a community and get this project rolling.

I have a few more, if you're interested in some nostalgia:
http://hldj.org/ns/kyliegirl
If you do manage a prototype, model or even CG, it'd make a perfect gorge plush concept to send pictures of to manufacturers.

I'll keep inquiring around for more info and update this thread as I go along. UWE, if you see a price-point you like or are ready to take over, feel free to jump in.

His point still stands.

"The community" doesn't own the rights to UWE's intellectual property and shouldn't try to create merchandise to sell. Even Cory's reply on the first page clearly states it's something they want to handle when there's more time and interest. Even if the units were sold at cost, UWE would most likely not enjoy losing control of their IP or having possible competition if they decide to go forward with a gorge plushy. By "losing control of their IP" I specifically mean the public's perception of NS. If you haven't noticed UWE all seem like 'quality freaks' who want nothing but the best for their game/image so having something out there with NS stamped all over it without any control on the quality seems like a nightmare situation for UWE.

You still can't go 'lolololol I'm taking ur IPz to go make some stuff and sell it olololol' unless you live in korea.

If you don't own the rights to the franchise you don't get to sell stuff related to it, you don't neccesarily get to even make stuff related to it unless it qualifies as fair use and even then you need to defend it in court a lot of the time.

Yeah, I can see how it sounds like that. I think publishers really push developers to release games when they may not be at a satisfactory level. So long as UWE is funded, or willing to eat ramen all day, they have the luxury of not being bullied by a publisher.

My sympathies for your inability to multi-task or use a Gantt chart. Fortunately most of us realize that although a key player may not be ready now, it does not prevent the rest of the community from preliminary involvement such as gauging interest, collecting information, and brainstorming ideas.

On that note, as another member suggested, I'll try to setup a website whereby members can express their interest, what their price range is, and preferred style for a gorge plushy. Hoping interest will grow to 500 by or after release time.

Clearly taking our IP and using it in any way for profit, or without our permission, is not allowed. However this does not seem to be whats going on here. There is nothing wrong with someone from the community finding out information on the steps involved and financial cost to produce something like a plush gorge, as well as gauging some initial interest in the community.

We appreciate the help with some of this legwork, and, when we have more time may look into some of these options. Just don't get your hopes up, as there are still many hurdles to overcome in order to make something like this happen.

Thanks.

However, one of the main obstacles, currently, is the fulfillment. Meaning the boxing up and shipping out of whatever is ordered. The up front cost to something like a plush gorgie is substantial, given that we'd have to buy them in bulk and there's an uncertainty of how many would be sold, but in addition to that we just don't have time to devote to packing and shipping of purchased merch.

The companies that do handle the fulfillment side, like cafe press, etc. tend to take such a large % chunk it doesn't make it worth the time, and the quality is often pretty crappy.

Hopefully we can figure out a way to make it work, but for the moment we (obviously) have bigger things to focus on.
