Same here if I get to close in texture lit mode it all turns yellow, but if I back away from the map I get normal lighting. Everything worked previous to the most recent update.

    Same card I got. I demand a fix :(
  • warlordwarlord Join Date: 2003-09-16 Member: 20925Members
    demand? really?
keep in mind that this is so far an alpha release, and as an alpha that means that it is not even finished. so far were just lucky that the editor works as much as it does.
when its in beta and final versions, then id say a demand is in order.

    anyway
since you all have the same problems and video cards than there must be something these cards cannot handle.
how far out do you have to zoom before it starts to work correctly? is there anyway to post a screenie of the before and after.

im guessing that maybe something fades or disappears after a certain distance away from the screen and when it does it allows dynamic lights to function

In Texture Lit mode everything is yellow.

I have very current video drivers
This was not a problem previous to the most recent update
I am not the only one with this problem (<a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=108366" target="_blank">Related Topic Click Here</a>)
I did not use any spotlights

When in Texture Lit mode if I am camera back far away from the map all the yellow goes away and lighting appears normal, however as soon as I get close everything turns yellow again.

if you look closely in the yellow you can see brighter spots where the lights actually project.
right now both these shots are from outside the walls of the map! does this still happen if you are inside the rooms??
how about a shot from inside the room too, i might help with diagnosis

okay i think i may have found your problem.
i was playing around with the lights and i noticed the dynamic shadows cast by props fades after you zoom out a bit.
so to test my theory try removing every prop including the player model, just make it lights and world geometry and see what happens

EDIT: also remove any transparent materials like grates and such as it seems the shadows cast by them are also dynamic.
so just lights and opaque world geometry

I just removed all the lights from the mining room and tested the texture lit of course its pretty much all black but zoomed in or out it doesn't turn yellow. While the hallway which has all its lights is still yellow.

PS. It seems that some of the lights wont cause the yellow black out, only certain lights.

try removing all the props including the player model and leave the lights

EDIT: okay i did some playing around and it seems that everything has a dynamic shadow even world geometry.

with that in mind i dont think there is any way you can work around it until it is updated better.

but i am sticking with my guess that this is caused by the dynamic shadows themselves and after you zoom far enough from the map all the shadows have faded and it renders just the lights glow on things.

now its up to a developer to confirm this and to see if there is any fix to it

It's frustrating because I made my pre-order because they started offering Spark Editor, now since this "update" everything is hosed.

I have the same "full yellow" results on any light when 'Cast Shadows' is set on (default?) now too.

    Geforce 7950 GT

    - Same with spot light (at least it doesn't crash anymore if I add a spot light)

Alright so far nothing can fix this. Even when u zoom out and see the lights, IT DOES NOT CAST SHADOWS. To make it not yellow just disable shadow on the lights thats it. But nvidea 7 series and below CANNOT SEE SHADOWS.

To clarify: I'm pretty certain this is related to shadows. If you go through your map and set the "Casts Shadows" parameter for all your lights to "False", you will hopefully not see this problem (although unfortunately you'll have to do without shadows until it's fixed).

Lights will cast shadows by default, but you can alter this. To do so, load up the ns2\ns2.editor_setup file and change this line:

    <parameter name="casts_shadows" type="boolean" label="Casts Shadows" default="true"/>

    to:

    <parameter name="casts_shadows" type="boolean" label="Casts Shadows" default="false"/>

That way you won't have to worry about turning shadows off each time you place a light.

Yep its definitely caused by the shadowing, damn.
  • InkInk Join Date: 2009-08-15 Member: 68499Members
insane im pretty sure i just said that.
  • TinCanTinCan Join Date: 2006-12-11 Member: 59010Members
I'm sure its directly related but I wanted to add that all props look yellow when browsing as well. (Geforce 7950 GT)

Imagine that: An alpha version of an editor for a game that isn't finished has a bug and hasn't been tested on every conceivable hardware platform.

    Shocking.

The newest update ( new years update :P ) added support for this particular bug. It's not quite fixed though as you can hopefully see its creating lines everywhere, at least spark is creating and casting shadows now.

(only 1 of the lights had shadowing turned on when I uploaded this screen shot, but the effect is the same the more lights I turned on the worse and more plentiful the lines became)

just noticed that a lot of the props in the prop browser window are all yellow, but when placed onto the map they appear normal.

Maybe you have an ambiant light yellow with intensity to 1000000 :p

Just clear your thumbnail cache, delete everything in C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Natural Selection 2\Editor\cache. The next time you start the editor it will regenerate them all.

    Those black lines are called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moir%C3%A9_pattern" target="_blank">Moiré</a>. I'm unsure of the specific reasons that it happens, but occasionally you can fix the problem by;

-moving the light source father away from the affected geometry

-turning down the intensity of the problem light

These are inconvenient and temporary fixes. I'm not sure if there is actually anything that can be done (coding wise) or if it is simply a limitation of your hardware.

Worked perfect thank you, still working on the lines though.

Just found out that the lines follow the camera wherever it goes.
(ex: The lines in front of the cart on the floor, no matter what angle I look the lines are always horizontal like they are in the screen shot.)

    I don't know if that helps :-/
