<div class="IPBDescription">Helping to bring in more revenue/players</div>Hi
first off I want to apoligize for my bad english so spare me from comments.

I was thinking about how could a game like this generate more money, cause in the end if developers made more money we might get the game sooner and better + we would see NS3 :)

The first idea I had a while back is to have ingame commercials, I remember reading that the engine will have flash support so how about placing big LCD tvs in the ready room and have them display commercials for big companies say for ex coca cola, google, yahoo, AMD , Intel, nvidia etc. and generate revenue out of that. This could be done due beta testing time or even alpha if possible, am allso trying to figure out more ideas to generate money before time of release.

Also I will be making another thread once the cinematica tool is out, maybe do some co-op work wit some of you guys so we can make a video that looks like ingame footage from a prespective of a marine and spread it around to gamespot.com, gametrailers.com and other big sites wit lotz of viewers. I know that many people dont pre-order untill they see some actual ingame stuff ( in a video form ) so i think it will help bring in more players, we might even end up having some sort of help and feedback from developers if possible.

so what do ya guys think of my idea. and if u got any more ideas share them.
thanx

ps I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this in?

    In-game commercials? I don't think that is such a good idea.

    Well as i said it will only be in the ready room.

    I actually don't mind it, if the commercials were confined to the ready room only. It's not like it would be distracting or take away from the atmosphere as the ready room is just a place to jump around in between rounds. If something like this were to go in I assume it would be after NS2 releases and the developers (and future advertisers) have a better idea of player numbers.

    Commercials in games isn't such a bad idea, but it has to make sense otherwise it breaks the immersion.
    Games where this work is sports, where ads are commonplace, or a racing-game having decals on the car. It just doesn't make sense to have google-ads in Halo for example.

    So in Natural Selection 2, for the sake of the game itself and not the company perhaps (the game should be what makes this company since it's their first game anyway) it would be just plain wrong to use ads, and I'd probably loose my faith in UWE.

    Ready rooms are designed to set the mood of the level, a designer will use it as a mini-art piece to set a mood. If I had a TV with an Nvidia commercial shoved randomly in it, I would probably be a bit annoyed and insulted.

    Everything that brings UWE money and don't bother my gameplay im ok with.

    In-game advertisements is the future. Rammaj is on the right track.

    However, they must be able to go to the website while still in game, fluidly, quickly, and easily. Any lag, hassle, or stupidity of sort, and this idea flops. No point to in-game advertisements if you can't follow up.

    They could always generate more revenue by appealing to a larger fan base. I don't know what the game is like right now, but if it's anything like the competitive, challenging-seeking gameplay of NS1, then that small-but-dedicated crowd is what you'll get.

    Man, you take your ready room seriously. How often is the mood set when you have four different people all talking over each other on the mics while aliens and marines hop around? Combine that with the fact that you've seen/will see this readyroom many times and I'd say the mood is pretty much gone.

    Have you ever played BF2142? They had huge billboards that rotated advertisements. That was in the actual game (not a readyroom) and it really wasn't noticeable in the heat of battle.

    It's a good idea.

    lets be honest here, how can commercials take away the "feeling" in the ready room if i recall all the players was just jumping around flashing wit their lights and talkin to eachother, have u ever seen a player just standing there in the ready room and watching and admiring the texturs or anything else for that matter?
    in the end its a win - win situation if u think about it, they make a living out of it and we get the game we all want.

    I wouldn't mind Readyroom commercials at all, especially if part of the money went for funding map updates and such to keep the game fresh.

    At least some support for such commercials would be great. For example WC3 leagues have map advertisements. An easy way to integrate the advertisements would certainly help leagues if NS2 ever grows big enough to even distantly attract advertisers.

    It has been proven to help immerse a gamer into the thought of believing its a real world scenario. If you think about it, every where you go there's advertising... Even your own home (Your TV has a logo, all the products in your home have larger logos then they do anything else, even on FOOD!). In game advertising, i believe, is a great way to help bring the player into thinking its all realistic.

    I'm all for ReadyRoom advertising for actual products, but billboards and actual level advertising for factitious things like "Space-A-Cola" or what ever is even better.

    But it would have to be done tastefully

    Bad Example:
    <img src="http://cache0.techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/gamevertising.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    Good Example:
    <img src="http://blog.luon.com/public/Economist_080607.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    The first has just random ad placements, they dont fit into the world like the second (Though BF2124 could have done it a little better, like making the image itself look deteriorated and what not).

    Just my $0.02

    You actually did not remember to include Playlist. net, where it's not actually possibly required for one to enroll and you will stream any kind of tune you would like.

    I refuse to abide commercials in any game. If it's got advertising, I shouldn't be paying ANYTHING, PERIOD.

    Nothing to do with immersion or annoyance, everything to do with morality and consumer rights.

    I already refuse to go to movie theaters anymore because it costs $18 and I get the privilege of watching 15 minutes of coke ads before even getting to the previews.

    fail

    it's more funding for UWE, which even with pre-sales gain, they need more, and striking Adds deals will help, and they can limit them to Official maps and only in ready rooms(maybe one or 2 food ones in a food court area if a map has one xD)

    Selling malware in the installer would make money too, doesn't mean it's right.

    So is porn, which takes a stupid ###### man to ignore! So I say, implement porn! xD

    but out of seriousness, it may not be sounding all to great, by a minor moral loss for a greater game gain is worth it in my book

    "I shouldn't be paying ANYTHING, PERIOD."

    This, every person against gaming advertising says this, and I never get wtf they mean.

    Temphage it seems like u care only about ur self and getting the game,u arent even thinking about the long run and how they and we can benifet from this. u should remember that these guys are after all humans that are trying to make a living out of this, and even after the release of the game I would like to see these guys stay in the game industri for making a new genra, think about what they would accomplish in the future with bigger budget and bigger team.

    I dont wanna see a game like this end up in the hands of some big company that dont give a damn about the community but only money, cause after all UWE are from and for the community.
    suriosly i doubt that ingame advertizing in ONLY readyroom will ruin the game.

    Of course your Lamborghini will say "Lamborghini" on it. You probably don't want it to be emblazoned with "Bob's Horse Manure Depot" though.

    When you use Fileplanet for free, you have ads. When you pay for a subscription, you don't. So even though I was nice enough to fork over my cash I still get to 'pay' every time I visit the readyroom and see ads for Viagra.

    Why are you suggesting in-game ads? I propose this:

    1) Every month UWE sells out their front page to a new sponsor, and the entire site for that month is themed with their corporate logos and such. Forum icons could be replaced with Whoppers!

    <img src="http://crispyontheoutside.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/whopper.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    2) Every sig and avatar on the forums is required to have something to do with the sponsor of the month. And every third post on the forums is chased by a bot post with a flash ad on it.

    3) IRC should have several adbots added that periodically PM special deals to every member of the channel. In addition, after posting a single ad, they get a new mask and name so you can't ignore them.

    4) We should require all forum accounts have a valid, verified phone number associated with them, and then sell all the personal information of every account UWE has on their databases to advertisers.

    5) When you buy a copy of NS2 as the product or preorder, you should be directed to dozens of endless pages of 'special offers' you must meticulously go through and have a certain quota of offer signups before your payment is processed.

    <img src="http://www.specialoffers.com/img/logos/avenue.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /><img src="http://www.specialoffers.com/img/logos/vonage.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /><img src="http://www.specialoffers.com/img/logos/fashionbug.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /><img src="http://www.specialoffers.com/img/logos/officedepot.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    6) The installer could offer us several helpful deskbars, toolbars, icon sets, and system scanners integrated with the NS2 .dlls themselves for maximum helpfulness!

    <img src="http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/4491649/Cursormania-main_Full.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    7) Every time you launch the NS2 .exe, we can be forced to watch an unskippable stream of advertising for several minutes. Whenever you quit the game, NS2 helpfully launches several instances of browsers linking to the 'PRODUCT OF THE DAY!'

    <img src="http://gtsimages.gabriels.net/images/Marketplace/Scripps/HGTVPro/StoreLogos/242x0/3942.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    8) Whenever you die during the game, a popup for various peripherals like FATAL1TY XXXTEREME GAEMER MAUS pop up to suggest ways to IMPROVE UR GAEM.

    <img src="http://www.gameguru.in/images/razer-naga-01.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    9) If you're playing at night, health packs could be replaced with bottles of Mountain Dew GAME FUEL!!!11

    <img src="http://www.chrisdoelle.com/archives/dew1gamefuel.JPG" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    10) Maybe NS2 itself could just constantly run a program that monitors every action on your computer and sends it all in an unencrypted stream to advertisers as well.

    <img src="http://www.brightscope.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/john-deere.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    why do you insist on taking it over the top? theres a difference between 1 or 2 ads in the ready room and what you suggest. re: the original suggestion, no one is forced to look at the ads flashing on the ready room tv and they dont affect your game play, or wait to play at all, whereas your suggestions are forced upon the player. complain all you want about paying for a game with advertising in it, $20 is nothing and you should be happy thats all you're paying for a good game.

    Then raise the price. I just find it amusing that the very first idea for advertising is to put it IN-GAME when we have plenty of advertising space on the site itself. If they're not selling banner ad space all over the site, what makes you think they're going to do it in-game?

    I'm not taking it 'over the top'. You are when you suggest putting ads in game 'won't bother me' or that 'it's okay because it's only a LITTLE bit'. Everything's just a little step further from there. First we have the ads in game, then we want a little more money so we put ads on the forums, then we want a little more so we expand the in-game advertising, then we want a little more so we sell email addresses.

    It's already an insta-ban whenever an adbot shows up on the forums or IRC, is it not?

    Nothing is going to change my mind on this.

    <b>No. Advertising.</b>

    Temphage you are being a little bit extreeme here. I mean 2-5 ads on a tv in the readyroom would generate more money to make this a better game and to fund for feature maps and DLC and even feature games.

    You have to understand that pre-orders are there only money maker right now, so if people dont preorder or at least not enough we might even not see the game, or stuff gets cut down from final version.

    So if u want that ur being selfesh and not thinking about ur fellew community members and the UWE team.
    I understand ur point and I allso hate advertizment in general not only in games, but if it gonna help out in making one of the greatest games out there not to mension my favurite one then so be it, plus as someone said earlier it might only be in the first 3 or 4 official maps, once some money start rolling and I hope it sells well on steam after release they might drop it from future maps and even the maps that had it cause its gonna be a flash file so they can just exchange it with NS logo or even leave it blank, that is if they decide to go with it and implement it.

    That was extreme - I know it, and that was the point. What you may find extreme other people might be just perfectly happy with. Even you apparently have a limit at which point you say "Enough is enough." My limit for advertising is effectively zero. The only reason I tolerate it on websites is because I use AdBlock and therefore don't even see them there.

    And yes, I know they need money. But selling out the game and becoming a corporate ###### is not the way to do it. Extreme is resorting to that FIRST without considering other means. The price of the game should've really be raised by $10 in the first place if money was going to be so much of an issue that they were debating cutting giant chunks of content.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->so if u want that ur being selfesh and not thinking about ur fellew community members and the UWE team.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Understandable, but unacceptable - because what if they don't? What if my custom map refuses to be accepted because I didn't put enough ads in it? Resorting to in-game advertising for revenue should be the absolute LAST option.

    Here's how advertising goes:

    Someone decides to put a small ad somewhere, it isn't obnoxious.
    It makes some money so they expand the amount a little.
    People start ignoring it because of familiarity.
    Ads become brighter, with more contrast, possibly eye catching movement.
    People get used to it and start ignoring it again.
    Ads are ported from another source and simply thrown into the wrong context for easy ad dollars.
    People get used to it and ignore it.
    Ad increase...

    This is why we have TV commercials before movies in a theater we paid money to get into instead of just movie previews (sds, but acceptable and in context). This is why we have overlay ads on top of TV shows on cable, which we pay for, and there are still the same commercials between the shows as on over the air free TV. Adding ads NEVER reduces costs for the user.

    I wouldn't demand money back for ready room ads but I would be extremely disappointed in a game that had them in the middle of action where they wouldn't be logically (racing games with ads, sports games with ads etc are there for context as they are there in the real world). I did not buy BF2142 because of the in game ads. Either I buy the game at full price with no out of context ads, I get unobtrusive ads and a low price, or the game is free. BF2142 has out of context obtrusive ads and is not free so no money from me.
