One major issue I suspect, as with NS, will be finding the people to perform those translations well. I can't comment because I simply don't know if UWE has those skills on board, but it's certainly a decent suggestion to try and cover at least a few of the more common ones, in gaming terms.

I imagine that after the game launches and you start making money from it you could probably contract the people valve has been using. I'm sure they'd be happy to loan them to a steam-exclusive game.

There shouldn't be THAT much of an issue, except for perhaps translating any textures (redoing them...) and stuff.

Most text would be in the form of a text-block that you edit in the original graphics program. I would -guess- that some random clan members from different countries would be more than happy to translate NS2 to French, Italian, Spanish, & maybe even Korean, Swedish, or Russian.

Someone just needs to program a website that contains the phrases that need to be translated, and some way for someone to submit a translation... Not all that complex...

But having it all in English would be 100x easier/less trouble. Plus, most peeps understand English anyhow...or at least can figure out what the stuff means.

NS2 could be set up with a language / localization system that uses easily accessible string tables. The mod community could quite easily create their own translations that way - might be a better way to go if it isn't a priority for UWE.

Just a thought before heading off to work: Has anyone considered the impact on the servers that having multipul languages will have?

Translation of NS2 into multiple languages is a priority for us and it's something we've set aside for in our budget. It's too early to say exactly what languages will be included though.

You're right, but community translations only work well for plain text.
Depending on how much the NS team wants translated they may have to hire professionals for that. Because stuff like textures and voice commands can't be realisticly translated by the community.

thank you for your answer, im sure if you not transalte there many many fans they do.
i see other realy "tiny" mods there have many fans they translate correct the mod by themself.
i think you dont need to pay for some languages, maybe you find some people, they do it for free <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Why translate it? I'm German and don't know any players who would prefer to play the game in German. Imagine locations having different names (example: T-Junction would be T-Kreuzung). You could not communicate with players from other countries.

I would recommend to translate only help-files, manuals and ingame explanations of features. But locations, weapons and functions should not be translated.

I used to make the official spanish translation for NS (it's included in the default install, but it's outdated and I don't think you can use it without some file renaming). Most of the people just played in english because... well, the menus are simple enough... it was mostly for new players so they could understand the help popups... Some things were left in english (like locations, for example) to avoid communication issues.

I know, this Thread is really f***ing old, but i want to know how it looks like now?

I can make the German Translation, and this for FREE, and I'm sure many other NS Fans would help, and translate it into other Languages for free.

We can make this during the Alpha and Beta (I already bought the NS2 Special Edition)

In the future everyone and everything speaks English. This includes the alien hive, the aliens, and your friendly hand grenade, which provides you with emotional support counseling during those fail maps.

I never understood why someone would include other languages then English in a game since Most players KNOW English ( its the same as in movies and cartoons, Why would anyone change the language)

There will be a community based translation system yet to be developed.
Once this tool is created, you can participate on the translation process (don't know how it will be managed). Yes, this time is for real, I have asked Charlie about and that was basically the answer (well, short version of it).

They depress me.

In other words, you don't know what you're talking about. In Spain the Simpsons is in Spanish, in Italy the Simpsons is in Italian... not all countries understand English to a high level. Most countries dub English language films into their own language (e.g. they have a voice actor for Arnold Schwarzenegger that does all his films), other countries watch the English audio with subtitles. Very few non-native English speaking countries watch films in English. Stop being ignorant and/or considering non-English speakers as second class citizens.

Germany is the Number 2 biggest market for Music, Movies and Video Games!

We got no Movie thats not synchronized into German, and i know maaaany people how don't understand English, so i think a German Translation would be great for the Market, and of course other languages as well.
  • DeKayDeKay Join Date: 2009-06-08 Member: 67752Members
I'm german but I dont need a german version.
In NS1 everyone used the english names for stuff anyway, so we are used to that.
I dont really see the benefit of a translated version, ppl would have to learn two names for each object (for example the armory might be translated as "arsenal" - that a) sucks and b) is just not necessary.

    I agree.

It's important to get those translations, but think how hard it's to be a Commander if other players don't know the English names.

I didn't mean that everything must be translated, but all descriptions and the help-files.

    For example these descriptions
    <img src="http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8/nslang.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
These are very hard to understand for many people that don't speak English.

I prefer Community Translations for menus and helptexts, but everything else needs to stay the same, especialy speeches since i.e. a french guy doesn't need the same amount of time as a german to say the same thing, so the alien with german has a little advantage to identify his enemy, if you understand what I'm trying to get at.

Also, language is a smelter anyway. a few hundreds of years and every language will be the same, especialy those with the same stem of origin (european languages originate from a related base in case you didnt know).
  • JediblingJedibling Join Date: 2008-10-29 Member: 65321Members
Do you know how i learned english? I learned some in school, but most of it i learned from games and movies. If your english is bad it doesn't help to change language on steam and stuff. You will still have to speak, write and communicate in english. That doesn't apply to some servers, which only encourages younger players which can't speak english to play. It's enough with all these british and american kids who thinks they are the best of all time. We don't need more minges/n00bs, especially not those who can't speak english.
My point is that you should try to learn english, not avoid it. If you have at least a bit of self confidence you won't care about people who say you suck at english.
  • DvdRomDvdRom Join Date: 2007-10-13 Member: 62622Members
I'm just want to say, that the non English speaking market is a very big market, and i think it's good for all NS Players if NS2 is sold more often.

For example, my brother-in-law is from Turkey and grown up and live in Germany, and have never learned English, but spent about 200$(€) a month in Video Games, and play just on German Servers.

I told him about NS2, and he just ask "is it in German?".
