Combat Shield

People went all haywire when i said 'Riot Shield' and that is partly my fault. However, it is the same basic idea.

A lightweight combat shield used for protection against ranged attacks from Lerks, Gorges and Offensive chambers as well as melee attacks from Skulks and Fades and whatnot.

You can consider it a substitute for armor upgrades. It would add more visual appeal and more realism.

It would only be capable of defending in 1 direction - the front. It would be less durable than HA but would allow for more mobility. It could have a knock back ability against leaping skulks.

For visual reference:

It would be a cheaper alternative to HA earlier in the tech tree.

Starcraft II has implemented a similar upgrade to their marines so why can't it work for NS?

the LMG requires 2 hands. Meaning.... No shield.

But shields don't need a hand to hold it, they can be attached to the forearm.

actually it would be kind of interesting if marines could just enter an area and make an a tortoise formation like the romans did http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Roman_legion_Formation.jpg

I say no. It's already been revealed that the MG will have a gun-butt ability to knock back skulks. It would just ruin the idea of having armor upgrade strategies implemented in the game for the marines. As much as it would be bad-ass I will admit, it, doesn't fit the overall gameplay.

I like this idea more for other games. Against a mainly melee opponent a forward facing shield does not seem to fit.

Fits well for alien though... and thus we get the bone shield.

Well, if the shield had a slot in it you could mount the LMG into the shield and possibly reduce movement speed and reload or something.

But a rifle but is still better =P

Here is a similar idea. I think the "rifle butt" mechanic could fill this role.
