Too Many Marines Still Suck.

Do your duty.
Am I completely off-base with this?

#1 You are a marine, you do your best with what you have.
#2 You do not *NEED* anything. You might 'want' something, I want a million dollars - but I am not going to get it. That is life, get over it and play your role as best you can.
#3 Do NOT sit around base whining. You are supposed to be a marine, not some prima donna who is scared of getting their hair wet. Go out and die like a marine.
#4 You typically hold a hive. That hive is very important. I don't care how many times you die - you WILL hold that hive. There is NO excuse for sitting in base whilst the hive is lost.
#5 Resource points are 'nice', but they are not that important. I don't care how many resource points you have. If the aliens hold 3 hives, your odds of success are very, very slim. [providing the aliens aren't complete morons].
#6 Huh - you have no score!?!? There is a reason - YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE TRYING TO KILL THE ALIENS. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE TRYING TO SECURE 3 HIVES. Do *NOT* spend 30 minutes fighting over a resource point in the middle of nowhere.
#7 The life expectancy of an LMG marine gating into a hostile environment is very low. YOU DO NOT NEED 250 BULLETS. Just get in the damn gate and do your best. If it is important, the comm will often not mind giving you ammo when you get there.

If you cannot follow simple orders, and use basic common sense, then do NOT complain about your commander when you lose.
If you are trying to play deathmatch quake, you will LOSE, no commander is going to save you.
Dying is a part of the game, if you cannot handle that then you might prefer counter-strike.

You CAN kill a skulk with an lmg/pistol.
You CAN kill a fade with an lmg/pistol, a lot of the time you will die - use your best judgement, but a suicidal charge is often the best choice. (at the very least that fade now needs to spend time getting health, and then returning to continue the attack).

You CAN give advice to a commander, but 'i wanna shotgun' is NOT advice, it's a request, and most of the time it will be denied.

I am getting really tired of 'wanna shotgun', 'need shotgun at base plz'. Everyone can read your message. If you get no response, the answer is 'request denied - get your **obscenity** out of my base and do something useful'.

Very well written. I may bind that teamchat response to a key, for those who spam 'Gimme HA/HMG at base plzzzz!!!!1!'

(Some part of me hopes that one of my former Marines, Odin, is reading this post.. whining for a shotgun just as described.)

Actually It seems the main problem is too many commanders still suck, holding a hive does no good if we don't have enough upgrages or
equipment to fight off the two hive aliens

This is the maine fualt of most of the crappy commanders I've seen, they expect the marines to find something usefull to do, thats YOUR job, if the marines are sitting in base then unless they're ignoring they're waypoints YOU have screwed up, I'm tired of joining teams where I get no order, no upgrades, and no equipment. We get one hive but as soon as they get their second we're overun by fades and lerks because we still have basline lmgs with no upgrades.

I believe he's talking about Marines who *ignore* waypoints you give them, stay in base and whine 'gimme betr gun plzzzzzzz!!!11!!'. Odin was one who would sit and REFUSE to leave the base without a shotgun and HA (five minutes into the game no less), regardless of if I handed him a waypoint or not. He'd spam for the gear he wanted, and generally acted like a nine-year-old (which he may have been).

Very little will tick me off more than a Marine who ignores orders to go fight, because he's afraid of dying or needs a larger phallic symbol before he'll feel secure in 'nailing' Aliens.

your right to a point... imo.
marines should not sit at base and whine for guns, the commander will give them out when needed. IF you can't handle the skulks with a LMG you should not be playing this game.
However, marines who ignore waypoints to go fight aren't exactly that bad. Sure they are not doing their job, but if they are good enough they can help out a lot more than expected. A LOT more. After the initial rush you do need to know where the enemy hive is at, a rambo guy can go scout for that(since he can usually hold his own) while the rest of the team takes the nearest hive and builds in it. If the rambo guy is good enough he can take out many enemies without risking his teammates.

i dont feel like fully explaining what i mean but i hope ya get it ;/

"This is the main fault of most of the crappy commanders I've seen, they expect the marines to find something usefull to do, thats YOUR job."

(I play as marine, very rarely as commander, and this piece is written based on my observations as a marine).

"We get one hive but as soon as they get their second we're overun by fades and lerks because we still have basline lmgs with no upgrades."

Yep, and that sucks. But those are the cards we are dealt. As #1 says: "You are a marine, you do your best with what you have."

    A marine can:
    - do our best, advise the commander that we need help at the hive, and attempt to hold out as long as we can with repeated deaths. [this works ONLY if everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to hold that hive].
    - sit around at base waiting for HMG/HA.
    - vote out the commander.

I don't mind people voting out commanders, if we have someone who could do it better. [I sometimes even start this vote]
I DO object to people wasting resources (1 marine) by sitting around whining.

As far as I'm concerned, Rambos are just grade-A Xeno-chow. They get no upgrades, no health, no ammo from me when commanding. They disobey orders, they are cut off. I have so many places to put my attention, and it'll likely stay wherever the most of my men are. You Rambo when I'm in the CC, you gonna die. A LOT.

Whiners are speedbumps. They take an Acid Rocket or two away from being aimed at one of my buildings or turrets. I could care less if they sit and whine, so long as there is only one of them. They ALSO get nothing from me, excepting a health-treat if they get those wounds fighting off an enemy attack of the base.

    Darwin, look... a rambo!

    not if your good
not bragging, but a good rambo will do just fine with lmg and ammo for his guns (from factory)
sure we know commander is going to yell at us, but whether he sees our helping potiential or not is his problem.

last game my commander gave me jetpack and welder out of the blue and i cha rg ed the last hive (rambo) and welded it to death.

    rambo's win.

I wish there was an easier way to give waypoints...IE, a "select all Marines" key. They run around too much and don't stand still enough to be acceptably easy to lasso.

    Know what pisses me off?

I'm rarely commander, and when I am we generally win, sometimes we lose but that's life.

So when I'm playing as a marine and I see fades attacking base, I rush the fades, I don't care if I die, I'll spawn back and rush them again, but what really pisses me off are those who don't, they want a shotgun to fight them off, well that'd be all well and good if they rushed the fade WITH the shotgun, but no, everytime they get a slight acid rocket wound they run back requesting health, now two things happen:

    A) they die while requesting health, waste of 20 resources (the shotgun, marines are expendable)
    B) They live, get the health they requested but, oh no! Mr. Fade has gotten all his health back! Damn now we have to start over

Just rush the **obscenity** fades, if u die you spawn back, this isn't like CS where you die ur dead til next round

Well, I usualy try to follow orders, build structures secure hives and such, but commanders do **obscenity** me off. For example, when i come back to base ( to get ammo) or I have like 4 health, I ask for health, and wait a lot and usualy not get it. I know I'm supposed to go attack, but i'd be killed in a second, so what would be the point? And I hate how commanders just think we're supposed to teleport somewhere where there are 50 fades blowing up our structures. It's suicide runs : respawn, teleport, die, respawn. Geez, commanders should take better care of marines too.

If you have almost no health, and are just carrying an LMG...drop the console and type "kill". Wait a few seconds and you'll have full health AND armour again! It's free!
  • Hang_LooseHang_Loose Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7775Members
Yeah, I know. I mean, what the hell... marines are expendable, this isn't counter-strike. You don't get one life. You get a 5 second wait. Oh no! 5 seconds, can't stand it any longer!

Doesn't even matter if you are carrying a weapon, offer to give it up, or die somewhere where you'll remember it dropped. Now heavy armor or jetpack is different, they are investments and probably should get priority, otherwise... every one of ya should have a key bound to kill.

Yeah, I do think that it is preeettty stupid when I tell people to head to hive, we're losing it, or I'm asking for backup at one when it's under attack, and that no one shows up, I'm seeing messages from teammates asking for jetpack/shotty. I bet I sound rather rude when I ask them to "**obscenity** their shotty" because we're "**obscenity** losing a hive."
  • TalesinTalesin Our own little well of hate Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7710NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators
As noted, I didn't say that I yelled at the rambos. Just that I cut them off from any resupply or upgrades. If they feel like taking on the whole Alien team by themself, that's fine by me. Distracts the aliens from my main push point at worst, and doesn't cost me anything. But if they don't follow orders, then they get *nothing* from the Comm. They sit and whine in base, disregarding a given waypoint or job, after they're told that there aren't enough RP right now for whatever individual upgrade, they're the LAST one to get that upgrade.

Do not p*ss off thine Commander. For he is the one thing keeping your sorry butt alive, jarhead.

Just like you are nothing without your Commander, your Commander is nothing without YOU. He's there to pass along tactical data, upgrade your weapons, secure locations, keep you alive in a massive firefight, show you a less-defended way around that Wall of Lame so you DON'T have to fight through it...

    Darwin, look.. a rambo-flavored meatpop!

Well put, so many lost hives and choke points, because marines needed that extra wieght to die with.
Also if you do make these rules into a spray please post a link here, I will spray that sh** all over the map.

I really liked your post, dumbo. It is so true, I rarly carry more than 150 in my LMG - maybe 200 if I plan on being out a long time. However my pistol is always full

I espically agree on the rushing of the fade. It really does work best -- thier acid rockets own marines at long range. The best way to go is by getting an inch from his face and unloading.

Your #5 point is sorta off, I feel. If you capture enough nodes (while taking hives, of corse) you then will deprive the aliens of the nodes. Well written post, Dumbo!

I agree with everything said in the initial post 100%. Beatuiful!

Resource Nodes < Hives. Always, without exception. It won't much matter if you have hundreds of resources when that onos comes stampeding into the base, will it? In contrast, if you're holding a hive (or even better, two) then you have time to go out and capture more resource points... heck, the hives always come with one anyway! If you take a hive, you won't have to worry about an onos taking down the structures you've already built. Take two and you won't have to worry about fades. Heck, take all three and you won't even need HA/HMG, because you've already basically won! Resource points are so much less important than hives it's not even worth discussing.

Your ammo loadout should reflect what role you're playing in your most recent, sure to be short-lived incarnation. If you're going out primarily to fight aliens, take about 50/100 or 50/150. If you expect to encounter a lot of structures, go for 50/200, 10/20 or so, but be sure you survive long enough to use all that! If you're given a weapon, load it all the way up and make sure that if you die, it's for a very good cause, because those guns are expensive.

On the flip side, you are not expensive. In fact, you're free in terms of resources and very cheap in terms of time. With that in mind, die often. You are completely and totally expendable, unless you're carrying some sort of investment like HA, HMG, or welder. This is not to say you should always play recklessly, but if you can do the most damage to the other side by going out in a blaze of glory, by all means do so.

If you choose to play rambo, do not expect help from the comm unless you're providing some sort of service, like useful recon. In this case, you're not a rambo, you're a scout, and you know what you're doing. A rambo is a player that goes out and kills stuff because it's there; don't be one of those players, because they're a serious detriment to the team. The aliens will set up all over the map, and not every structure or player you see is crucial enough to warrant spending time and ammo killing it. The bottom line is, don't expect help from the comm if you don't give it to him.

On the other hand, commanders shouldn't have to babysit marines either, unless they're the most important thing going on at the moment. If you need health, you're sure to get it because the comm will be watching you like a hawk. If you simply want health, then by all means go out and die so you can respawn fully healed. If you're not the most important thing going on, you do not deserve health or ammo. The comm has more important things to do than keep you alive.

The same is true of guns and armor. If you need it, it'll probably be waiting for you when you respawn. Since the comm may be busy babysitting frontline marines or building elsewhere, a little reminder is entirely appropriate, but only one is ever necessary. If you sit for more than 5 or so seconds without a response of any type, just move on, because yer going out naked no matter how long you wait. You don't need a gun upgrade every single damn time you go out to kill skulks or even fades; LMGs work just fine, and if you can't use that adequately then you don't deserve anything bigger anyway.
