No-hive Kill, A Compromise

NimbusNimbus Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7239Members
<div class="IPBDescription">really</div> There are plenty of people PO'd about this new feature, but something like this feature is needed to stop idiots from wasting people's time.

<b>How about this:</b> As soon as all the hives are destroyed, a timer of 2 minutes starts counting down. If, by the end of the timer, a hive has not been started (started, NOT a finished, as I hear the autokill thing currently will still kill you if you have a hive building) then the autokill thing will set in.

It's simple, it gives aliens who actually could come back to win a chance, and it doesn't waste too much time. Besides, I love to play hunt the skulk.

Is there anyone who would have an objection to something like this?

    I think a count-down timer sounds fair

In my opinion, this is by far the best option, although I think a longer timer would be appropriate--3 minutes at the most.

How 'bout the last-hive-kill gets removed, and you just ask your Commander to use the <b>Sensor Sweep</b> function on all the vents? If they move to avoid the sweep, they come up on motion tracking. If they don't, the commander sees them and waypoints them for all their Marines to come and kill with GLs, JPs, and all the rest.

Last-hive-kill was NEVER needed. It was just STUPID Commanders that ended up bringing it into the game as a 'balancing feature'.

Personally, if people wait 3 minutes a ROUND in CS, I think they can afford to wait 3 minutes out of 2 hours here.

Wait 3 minutes, and if no hives started, then all alien positions are revealed to commander and all marines. Say the nanites have finally been able to break through the gridlock with the lack of new bacterium produced by hives.

Problem with that being that at the moment, even if you have a Hive growing, the autokill still kicks in. Along with that it CAN take over three minutes to build the RP for a Hive.

Again.. no change was needed. We have the Sensor Sweep button, just idiot commanders don't know it's there, forget about it, or whatever. Remove the autokill. No other change along that line is needed.

I really like the idea of giving the aliens a few minutes to run around and harass the marines a bit more before the game is over. If the alien team knows they lost the game, it basically becomes a fun game of cat-and-mouse for both teams (<i>unless one moron hides in a vent a stays there</i>).

Personally, I like the idea of putting doomed teams' positions on the HUDs for the other team to see. It makes more sense than a slow death for aliens only with klaxons sounding, it SOLVES the actual PROBLEM (The problem is not that the otherteam's players are still alive; the problem is that <i>nobody can find them.</i>) and it allows some semblence of a comeback, even if the possibility is remote.

Legionaired, I think you found the perfect solution! IMHO, that's just what we need. You get the:

In any case, I watched my roommate play a match yesterday where they came back from no hive, to winning the game. He has *just* dropped the hive when the other one died. Would have sucked for him to die while waiting to put it up, considering it was pretty well defended (he knew the other hive was going down so he elected to put up some defense before the hive was up, to slow down the marines).

I thought the "slow death" terminated when a hive was built? Not completed, but started. Maybe I missed something...

But anyhoo, I liked it the way it was before. It wasn't hard to track down aliens.. it was kinda fun, a "round 'em up, boys" moment where we went seek-and-destroy. Even if the commander didn't sensor sweep, it was still fun to jetpack around and slink through vents to find the last few alien creeps <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

The timer should be lengthen, the game was fine before, except for that one in a million case where some idiot actually did hide in the vents. As a commander I have done sweepers after that last hive, and still have yet to find the aliens, though my guys did. Perhaps because it forced them to move from their hiding spot when they saw that blue circle.

How about we post all our feelings about how much this hive thing sucks, and should be resolved, in one post, instead of 30 billion ones.

Anyways, a timer is fine, or as before as you might find in any of the other Hive Death posts, a vote on the losing team would do it too.

They *do* already have the five-man rule. Timers aren't needed. Hive-kill isn't needed. Visible-to-enemy isn't needed. Commanders just need to learn how to work their chair, and how to sensor sweep. That's one of the reasons it's there.. to root out hiding enemies whether they be in the vents at game-end or cloaked outside of base in the main game.

I know that a "good" comm. should use sweeps but sometimes your an alien and your just beating your head into the monitor b/c the marines aren't using the sweep, and you can't do anything. I think that some sort of timer should be implemented, maybe 4 min, I can live w/ that but I've sat around for 12 min waiting for the idiot marines to find that damn alien. We need a middle ground something that will only slightly **obscenity** off everyone rather then half are fine half are filled w/ murdeous rage.
  • UnknownUnknown Join Date: 2002-06-12 Member: 759Members
I like the count-down timer to the slow auto-kill thing. It will prevent marine rushes and it will give the aliens to at least have a chance to come back from a loss.

Before 1.03, me and my alien team won with no hives. It just took a stupid Comm and quick skulk footwork. Now with this patch, we would have never had a chance to win.

A simple solution to find that last alien in end game. KILL YOURSELF! Most alien players will be like "COME ON MAN! JUST GO **obscenity** DIE NOW!" and since you can talk to them, they will find out where the last guy is.
  • ElricElric Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8448Members
Uh, the timer stops when one is building, they fixed that before it went live. And we won a game just recently in 1.3 after we lost all 3 hives.

you can't see normally or with the sweep aliens only their structures...so that wouldn't help

    Best idea I've heard about this whole 1.02/1.03 balance/team changing crap;

Revert everything back to RC10 status except the too many players addition and server CPU fixes.

(And yes, I'm talking about RC10, not V1 where the RP was bugged)
  • MadFunkMadFunk Join Date: 2002-11-16 Member: 8986Members, Constellation
This no hive kill crap is not, nor was it ever needed. I'm going to reinforce Talesin's point: If your commander is too incompetent that he won't provide you with jetpacks and grenade launchers and such, <b>eject him</b>. Any member of the team, even with NO experience commanding can take over and drop some Jetpacks and Grenade Lanchers for the team. Simple. So very very simple.

This is an awesome thread! The only problem is, since the team is taking a break I'm not sure about the chances of a member seeing this thread.

Maybe someone should e-mail them about it?

The thing is, an autokill feature <b>SHOULDN'T</b> be needed, but, since the average NSPlayer has an iq rivaling that of a ham sandwich, it is needed, seriously.

The trick is that you need to incorporate a method that keeps the dribbling idiots from getting **obscenity** off, and one that doesn't harm a normal course of gameplay. A timer of a few minutes should be enough time for a competent gorge to get that hive back up. If it takes longer than that, autokill sets in.

Another limit to the autokill maybe... If the marines have no IP or CC, and the aliens have no hives, there is no autokill.
